Every dog has his day, and Chris had his... 6-wheels and all. I'd hate to see it get all hot-headed over this 'skateboard' debate. Chris is full of surprises, but Mike is just plain scary in all disciplines. Both are fast... both are fun!
Chris just loves to aggravate us all with his constant experimentation, beguileing and bewildering us until we take him out back and beat on him til he squeaks like a dog toy.

I'm warning you boys that if you don't stop all this arguing I'm gonna have to come down there, take your damn 'skateboards' away and give you some chores to do... then I'm gonna lock you in a room for a week with the Comet Bomb Squad to play round after round of skateboard trivial pursuit with Smouse, Sully, Reese and maybe even a Carrasco brother or two! Although it might go longer than a week with the Carrascos involved.
Spiritually speaking, you're both going to burn like a trucker's butt on a long cross country drive.
So Tim... you trying to get some free green wheels or something? You gonna shine Chaput's shoes?

Although informative, you're post about FlowLab, Tierney, Quiksplit, etc didn't show me a single skateboard. All my boards have and always will have one deck, two trucks and four wheels. In my mind, that's a skateboard. So go ahead, call me close minded or old fashioned or whatever you want but I'm sticking to what I know. With that, a while back I said, "if you beat me on that thing again, I'll bolt another truck on my board." Well as of today, I take that statement back because you aren't gonna beat me on it again. hehehehehe

And originally a skateboard was made of wood (and wood alone), had metal wheels, used loose ball bearings, had single-action rollerskate trucks which were screwed to the board instead of bolted. And originally, they were designed for transportation and recreation.
The board that Miko shows below may (or may not) have some wood in it, has urethane wheels, precision bearings, double-action skateboard trucks and skateboard mounting hardware. It was designed to race, so you'd expect that it would be different than a typical-normal-traditional-conventional-classic-original board - and it is. Offset axles, titanium parts, special bushings, high-end bearings, specialty wheels, custom composite deck with certain flex/twist characteristics. And yet, it's still a skateboard. Add torsion bar suspension? Still a skateboard. Add a toe-stop? Still a skateboard. Add more wheels, more deck, more balls in your bearings, more grip, more intricate steering devices, and what have you got? A skateboard.
The strongest evidence to support the claim is that you don't change what it is that you are doing, and you don't change the way in which you do it. You are skateboarding on a skateboard. You stand on a board with wheels and you lean to steer. Take a picture of someone who is out it the road standing on a lean-steer board with wheels on it, and ask people who look at the picture what the guy is riding and what he's doing. It doesn't matter if it's a 14 wheeled Flow Lab, a 2 wheeled Tierney, an 8 wheel Kwiksplit, 6 wheel racer, or a board with 4 wheels on it. The answer will be "a skateboard" and "skateboarding". I can't think of what else you would possibly call it.
Some of the things that separate us from other disciplines is how we ride it and whether or not it's attached. Skateboarders place their feet (or at least one foot) on top of a platform of some sort, without attaching themselves to it (outside of gravity), and steer it only by leaning (tilting the platform).
Another good question is, "What isn't a skateboard?" Well, it's not something that you're attached to, it's not something that you lay down on, it's not a pair of rollerskates, it's not a bicycle, it's not a wagon, etc.
Rules in racing typically prevent the use of any brakes, motors, sails, straps, hooks, bindings or any non-lean steering mechanisms (steering wheels, handle bars, etc). Downhill skateboarding is the only type of skateboard racing that I am aware of that limits the length (48"), width (12") and weight (11-12 lbs) of the equipment, and the size of the wheels (4" - 5").
Now, on the other hand, if the questions were:
"What does a typical skateboard look like?", or;
"How many wheels do most skateboards have on them?", then the answer would obviously be "a board with 4 wheels on it" and "four".
If you only ask, "What is a skateboard?", most people will merely state what they typically see, and NOT assume that the answer is going to be used in making rules for skateboard racing. You'd expect a generic answer from a generic question, and not a specific one. I think that we all know what a skateboard is. The question is what rules and specs are going to go in the rulebook. And that's a very different question.

I have a lot of respect for people like Rick with kids and family, *beyond* full-time day jobs, and still have to respond to people hounding them for boards! I don't think I could do it. The quality is totally there... no better in the universe.

After a bit of tuition. When pumping i get all of my drive from the back foot , but this is where i'm getting my turn from aswell , not from the front foot. Is this bad? Should the turning come mainly from the front foot. I have found on my cruiser I turn toe side with my front foot and heel side with my back foot??
