Understanding rake

Hi
Sorry if im being a bit confusing... it is really confusing me too. I have been building boards for about 8 years and have come to a point where i am satisfied with my board but now need to make a truck that will work in synergy with the deck to create an over better package.
I have been trying to understand what difference it makes in the feel of a truck to place the axle higher or lower than a line that runs perpendicular to the axis of rotation (is this called the pivot angle?)
Randal R-IIs have positive rake when the 180 is showing and a negative rake when its not. DH have no rake and the axle is in the same plane and perpendicular to the axis of rotation…
I have been told on other forums that a positive rake gives a more “tippy” turn dew to increased leverage where as a negative is the opposite but I would like to hear what a slalom rider thinks, although you do you different styles of trucks….
Hope this helps you understand what im trying to figure out.

I have no idea what you're asking here...ask me about rake on a bicycle fork and I know what that is and how it effects the handling. Rake on a skateboard truck...dunno. Anyone out there have any ideas? I bet Chaput has some...mister kick-ass truck inventor...the kind that don't break kingpins, heheehehehehe!!

tuck experts can you tell me more about rake... what effect does offsetting the axil from perpendicular to the center of the axis of rotation have? Surely it produces a different feel from that of just changing the hanger angle. By offsetting the hanger is still on the same angle therefore describing the same arc but by having the wheels at a different position will make the board turn differently at the same tilt angle of the board? Dose positve rake give more or less leverage and how does this relate to traction?
I am thinking of a randal style of truck by the way.

Hey Cat, We live in Corvallis (between Salem and Eugene) Oregon. My wife grew up in Orange County. Funny about Drew Lunsford, We've bumped into each other at a few of the "Big" races but we never hit on our Wyoming histories, that's funny, like you said- small world. Tell him I said "Hey" if you see him. Is he really that old that he went to school in 1962? That's when I was born, I just don't remember him being that age, well preserved I guess. Mike Miller and I once did some backcountry climbing and descents on snowboards on Casper Mountain(the ski area?) before they let snowboards on the lifts. I think we did one downhill run on that same road after snowboarding once. Mostly though, I just went there to skate his halfpipe.
If you skated those hills in 1971 with clay wheels(or even the few plastic non- urethane variety that were'nt much better), I'm impressed!

I left Casper in about 1981-- went to Steamboat, then on to Southern Cal. I ended up in the Bay Area in California & still live here.
I have skated Casper Mountain Rd/Garden Creek Rd since 1971 or so. I just spent 3 weeks in Casper visiting family & skated everyday.
I met another Casper person while skating cones in San Jose. His name is Drew Lunsford & he lived and went to school in Casper in 1962,1963,1964 & his dad sold Chryslers at the dealership there! Small freakin' world we live in, huh!!!
Is your wife from Casper also?? Where in Oregon do ya'll live now??

but you can try emailing me(I'm a Lo-Tech without a computer at home). Did you ever ride Mike Miller's 1/2 pipe?, he had it in the 80's, I don't when he finally wore it out and tore it down.
JBH- I've actually been "on the wagon" for a while for ALL caffiene products. It's been a good experience. However, if Chaput pisses off or disappoints Dave Mitchell again, Dave will duct-tape me to Chaput and give me RedBull by I.V. if I refuse to drink it and make me talk Chaput's ears off in retribution. Dave's really mean like that.

As for Sully and Price . . . the day I get respect from either of them is the day the hit is scheduled. They've both had to spend some serious car-hours with me and I'll say this: I haven't puked or been incontinent once! That's more than I can say for them, and we have video to prove it . . . 8-)
There's a sweet new park being built in downtown Santa Cruz that's on the same scale as Pacifica except it's got a full pipe as well. It's more than half finished and looking sick!

Miko, congratulations! You deserve it. Glad to hear that your past couple of years of paying dues (literally?) are being rewarded. You've been missed at the races.
For those of you who don't know, Miko is f#@! fast, and not just for a 53-year-old. When he gets some practice time, watch out.
Mike, what have you been doing lately? Is that Santa Monica park as good as it looks?

Holy Smokes!!! As most of you know, I've been making really low wages and working sundays for a few years now, which has made it hard to get to races, and in most cases even practice.
With a bit of luck and timing, I've accepted a great job back in the engineering world and I'll be making good money again AND have my weekends back! So I'm sure to make it to at least a couple races in the future . . . I am so STOKED!!! Now I can actually afford some new wheels and shoes as well! Woohoo!!!!

Hey Cat, I'm originally from Cheyenne and Laramie, born in Casper. Presently My Wife and I live in Oregon. I thought I was the only Wyoming slalom'er! Definately go to a COSS race if you can (if you did'nt go to the US Nationals in Longmont Colorado this year). I wish I could make it to the Utah race but no can do this year.
Where in Wyoming are you and are there any others slaloming?

Mike: It was a real treat to watch you race the tight at La Costa. It sure looked to me that your skate style is to have a VERY flexible spine with your upper body and lower body angling (not twisting, though)in opposite directions.
I really noticed this when you skated, more than anyone else.
Do you do this on purpose, or is it just a natural thing? Does your back give you problems after racing tight slalom?
Congratulations on the 2nd place, and it was a real treat to see you skate.

14"...whoa that's mighty short. I ride a 17.5" for everything TS and wouldn't go shorter even for 5' cones. Redrill or get another stick with the wheelbase slready drilled at or close to what you want.

Yo mikey! i gots a tight slalom question..i just got a board that i'm gonna use for tight, its the Aqua model that comet makes...the inner hole wheelbase is only 14"...is that to short for tight? like under 6 ft. never really tryed making a tight slalom specific setup, you know me, i ike going strait and fast. should I redrill the deck, or is that a ok wheelbase?

Life is real good these days...good work, good time-off from school, good weather...the traffic, well fortunately for me, I don't have to deal with it much. I'm gonna do my best at both races. How's things up in the East Bay?
