Kevin--I'll be there on both Saturday and Sunday. Got a good session today in San Clemente with John Corning. My new GS stick with the Speed Vents was ripping.

Skateboarding is not a Crime
On 4/8/2007 mike maysey wrote in from United States  (68.4.nnn.nnn)

I am hoping someone will read this and can help me. I have two sons, Reilly 12 and Seth 6, who skateboard and love it. As you know skating seems looked down upon, like a crime.

...maybe it would be a good idea to find out why skateboarding is looked at as a 'crime' in your area. If it's because there's a bunch of skaters waxing curbs and stuff and ruining pubic property, maybe it is a 'crime.' But if the skaters are just doing there thing and not hurting anyone (other than themselves), why could it be considered a 'crime?' I would ask people randomly what they're opinion of skateboarding is and why these people feel this way. Then you could go from there.

Reilly has to hide his deck in the bushes and hope that it doesn't get stolen. I am trying to convince them to allow me to pay for a skateboard rack to be installed next to the bike rack that way they can lock them up and not worry about them. The principal told me that she will have to talk to cabinet and see if it is "beneficial" for the students so write her in a few weeks. So my first question is do you have any suggestions on me getting this approved and installed at the local middle school?

...getting it approved? Hmm, if there's enough kids who skate to school it seems logical to me that building such a container for the boards would be a good idea. Why do you think it is that it might not meet approval? And address those issues. It's kind of like sales. You have to ask enough questions to get an idea of what your audience needs. Then you have to overcome objections. And proceed. If you create a positive feeling in peoples minds about the container they will be more apt to accept your idea and maybe even ask you to consult on the job. (why not, get it done right!)

Secondly a couple of us parents are trying to convince the staff at the middle school that "skaters" are good kids. We are hoping that we can get some posters put up at the school and maybe have someone come talk about not doing drugs and maybe put on a demo.

...a demo might be good. Something just came to mind. Is there a skatepark in the neighborhood? That might be a good place to somehow link the school with the skatepark. Maybe you could edit a few clips of some skate flicks together showing all the different styles of skateboarding. Then you have a demo/benefit that both the skatepark and the school with generate some money at. Then everyone's happy.
just some random thoughts

re: Ron's Bearings
On 3/30/2007 msk wrote in from United States  (66.214.nnn.nnn)

Dave-

The Missiles are designed to have a little bit of play in them, along with a deeper groove. This allows them to be used in wheels with less than perfect bearing seats, or with less than perfect width spacers, without binding when the axle nut is fully tightened. They're also a little faster than the original Rockets. The only possible downside to the play is there might be slightly less traction. If that's a problem, the original Rockets are designed with tighter tolerances, and won't have that play when tightened down...

Dear Mike ,a quick question.I got a set of R.R.'s Missiles. There is a little play in the wheel that I can't get out no matter how hard I crank them. But they are fast. They are on Rads. I believe you ride these or the ceramics.Am I going to have any problem with these not being perfectly tight? For straight ahead tight I don't think so.They are really fast and smooth. Would like to keep em. Thanks Dave

Do podiatrists get a ped-degree?
On 3/24/2007 JBH wrote in from United States  (70.245.nnn.nnn)

Thanks, Mike. Yeah, it took me a while. My standard line is "I crammed four years of college into twenty-five."

My degree is actually a B.L.S. (Bachelor of Liberal Studies) in Humanities. So I'm just one letter short of a BLT, which is probably what I'll end up making with it in the end. You want fries with that?

Seriously, thanks, and good luck with your chosen path. Hope you can make it to a couple of the biggies this year.

Congrats on finishing your B.S. Wow, I thought it took me a long time to get mine, but you have me beat by about 15 years!! Way to hang in there.

The school I'm doing now is related to my apprenticeship as a land surveyor. I am required to attend classes on Saturdays after putting in my 40+ hours during the week. It's pretty cool though because the program is so focused on surveying that I never have to ask, "Are we gonna use this in real life?" Because everything I've learned in class so far, well almost, I've turned around and used on the job. The schedule is a tough one right now, but once I journey out of the program I'll be making some pretty damn good coin as long as I stay in SoCal. I could even get out of this type of surveying and look into other options for work.

Since I'm gonna have to be picky about my races (again) this summer I'm gonna have to really look things over. I really really want to make Kenny's gig and I also really really want to make the Worlds. But I just don't know right now. Gotta wait to see how the schedule shakes out once school starts back up.

Gary, get one of those combo packs that Khiro makes. Then you can try them all. Personally, I use white in front and either yellow or black in the back.

Happy Birthday, Mike!

I just FINALLY finished school (bachelor's degree) after 25 years of stops & starts, so I can understand how that will eat into your free time. What sort of school are you going to? Is it academic, trade, or something else?

School or no, I hope you can make it to at least one or two races. You are always one of the favorites. The Worlds will be in North Carolina this year, and I expect there will be a BUNCH of fast Europeans coming, as well as several Canadians, and of course the fastest Americans. It'd be cool to see you there.

On 3/15/2007 mike maysey wrote in from United States  (68.4.nnn.nnn)

Pauliwog, I don't know about Hood...I don't know about any of these races that I recently signed up for. I just found out last weekend school is in fact not out for the summer. Quite the contrary. I start back up in Mid May for another fun filled 6 month learning tour in apprentice school. Hoo Ray. Oh well, it'll be worth it in the long run, but right now it sucks. Anyway, I've not seen the schedule yet, but once I do I'm going to commit to one race, ditch school for that weekend and travel to a race. Maybe Ohio, maybe Hood, maybe Colorado, maybe the Worlds.

Gary, you never forget do ya? Thanks for the early wish...ya it's the 19th. I'll be the tender age of 35.
