Sully--Glad to hear the good news and also to know about the new additions to the NorCal crew!
Thriller--I won't be able to make the trip for your race. I got school on that Saturday. Man, I miss a lot of cool sh*t with this career thing dang it. Once I get through with it though I'll be back on the circuit, travelling to to each and every race I can afford.

Mike,
Lauren & I have been rasin' the next tony hawk, and doing the best we can up here in berkeley. Our son is almost a year-and-half and a real hell raiser.
Had Clayton & Jacquline(they have alittle boy named Eamon who is 8 weeks old) along with Jonathan & Molly over for a pig-out session for thanksgiving. All are doing great.
Keep up the good work in the south lands.

Hopefully they make me look smart, I didn't get them to help me see that's for sure. It's all about appearances here in Orange County, don't you know? I have a Hummer these days and live in a house on the cliff!! (that's a joke)
The babe is my girlfriend, Melissa. She came out to the race the other night and took a few photos. I actually don't skate all that much honestly...since I've been living a stones throw to the beach, I've been surfing quite a bit. Built my surfboard quiver over the summer with a few single fins, a twinnie and one tri-fin. Needless to say, I spent almost all summer down at T-Street or the pier.
Howzit going up there?

i know what ya mean mike, slalom does'nt quite let me get my jiggles out like bombing down some 14 mile long twisty road at 50+mph.
i'm sure there are job opportunities for you here in new mexico...ditches and hills await...
PS, the only time we run slalom here is the month before the Nationals. otherwise its midnite hill bombing, park skating, sliding gnar corners, and riding ditches.

I don't know how "innocent" slalom was way back when, but I can only guess that it mirrored the Pump Station this past weekend.
What a cool, relaxed & yes.... innocent vibe that was resonating all weekend long.
There was Denis "Shufly", Chris Yandall, and the oh-so-cool Jamie Hart. What a pleasure it was to meet Jamie and listen to all his stories.
It's always fun hangin' with the old guys! I don't have room to talk--- according to the article in the Statesville paper.... I'm an old grandmother!
I love it!

Donald, it seems to matter man. Unfortunately it's me myself and I who have to somehow stay motivated to skate. To me, it seems like the magic has started to fade a little. It's due to many factors, but man, slalom ain't what it was for me a couple years ago. Maybe once I become Journeyman I can concentrate on it more, but for now, I have to be a career man. I'll make a strong comeback in probably a year or two. I'll have to make my way to Europe once this is over in terms of work.

from what you say the sad answer is yes.
maybe the cali crew should turn their head around and look at the "rest of the world".cossland has pps and pavel guys skating together,gog has kaliber,wefunk,pavel guys skating together,england has pavel and and and.
is it really that important who you are with?
makes me wonder
where is the innocence this sport has had?

Yes, I know what you mean, I stayed pretty close to home this year due to limited time off and not wanting to spend more time in a vehicle than on my board, that's another reason why I'm sorta burnt-out on "racing"(especially the "big" races) as oppossed to just taking a pile of cones to a spot and actually RIDING for a few hours straight instead of WAITING for a few hours for my next run and possibly getting eliminated. Fooey on that. Love the slalom, tired of the racing. Adios - P

Joe...funny you say that because a coupe years ago when I came out there for the Indian School and Bear, I thought to myself I could live there if for nothing else but to surf the ditches. Do you know if there's work for Land Surveyors out that way??
Paul...I don't think you realize how far the Bay Area is from here. It's literally an 8 hour drive. I'll just stick to surfing while slalom has this lull.

Thanks Mike, and thanks for the all the fish. Man that was good. I was already stuffed by the time Noel served the tri-tip. Thanks to Brent & family, Tim, Noel, Lynn, Melissa and yourself for making the small turnout into a really fun race. I couldn't have wished for a better group of people to hang with on a beautiful Sunday at the park. Tim came early, stayed late and ran the timer for all runs. Lynn helped troubleshoot the timer cables yet again. Sorry Lynn, no days off.
Thanks to sponsors Abec11, Sk8kings and Skaterbuilt for the support and swag. Abec11 paid the park reservation. Sk8kings and Skaterbuilt donated swag. Lynn won the Crown Jewel wheels. Brent and Mike won Sk8kings t-shirts. I won the Skaterbuilt Maysey deck, oh yeah! Last place gets the best prize, in your face suckers! OK, Mike, Brent and Lynn won more money, but even I got some this time.
For a small pack, it was a close race. Mike, Brent and Lynn all had the lead at various points. Every one of us improved on every run. The course I set was about shifting gears and staying on line. It was cool to watch Lynn carefully tweak her rig between runs and get immediate feedback from the timer. Watch out Worlds, Lynn is gonna kick some ass.

Fun time today. Thanks for the race Steve. That was the one of how many races in SoCal this summer?? It's a bummer we didn't have more events here in the mecca of skateboarding. I know they take mucho time and mucho preparation and muy money, but it just seems like slalom has lost a bit of it's luster here in the SoCal. Sorry, a little tangent there. Anyway, thanks to Tim, Lynn, Brent and Family, Steve and Family for keeping slalom alive down here. Too bad there were so many no-shows. Whatever though, more bar-b-q for me!!
Today got me thinking though. Thinking back to one of the reasons I moved down here. I wanted to be part of the scene that was dominating the '02 FCR Tour. Guys like Chicken, Richy, Evans, Kosick, Arab, Attila, O'shei...the list goes on. Those were the guys I looked up to and those were the guys I wanted to skate with. I was buddies with Marc DuPaul and had already been admitted as an honorary member of SSS, so I figured I was a shoe in to skate with the boyz. I don't know if it was bad timing or what but not long after I moved here, the scene disintegrated. I mean, nobody in Orange Co. skates together anymore. I know there's perfectly reasonable reasons for this so I don't want to change the status quo I just wanted to point out an observation I've made. Maybe it's time to move to the Rocky Mountain state...or maybe not because it seems like where ever I go, the scene suffers. Same thing kinda happened in San Francisco shortly after I moved there. There's reasons for it, I just seem to have less than desirable timing. Anyway, having made this rant...
While at the 'race' today, I overheard Lynn talking to Steve about sessions she's had here and there and how much fun they were. Hey Lynn, I would be stoked if you or someone involved could keep my in the loop for such sessions. I'm only half an hour away and rarely get out to run cones much these days. That'd be great cool. I know we're on rival 'teams', but I just let's just skate and have fun.

Hey Mike, I put one(and the accompanying light) on my commuter bike(front wheel) and it is NICE!!! Since I ride 6 miles in the dark each night home from work, it's great to have. Quiet, no noticable increase in resistance pedaling, etc. Better than I expected. I figured you probably know something about these devices but in case you want any info, that's my 2 cents. Bob, try www.artofskateboarding.com. They LOWEST price they show for Strokers was more than $500. Not sure what that works out to in pounds, but it ain't bad. You'll have to register to sell on there, but you'll likely get the best price for those rare trucks.

I have a pair of mid 70's downhill slalom trucks and I was wondering what you might tell me about them as well as their value. There are only 4 words on one side says Pat Pend (no help) and the other side says Link side.
I also have a set of california slalom trucks never used and was wondering about the value of these

Hey Mike, Thanks for the info and opinion. I think the best suggestion is the heavy duty argument, since after all, it will be fairly heavy duty conditions. I'm thinking 26" 1.5" 100psi tires might be what I should stick with since already it's a "semi-hard" feel to the bike with bad pavement patches, crackes, etc. I'm thinking a 700cm wheel would likely feel "harder" due to the smaller diameter 1.25" tire and that would shock the frame harder(and my butt and wrists). Thanks- Paul

26" v. 700c...I've heard arguments both ways.
Generally I would say use what the frame is designed for. One obvious advantage of 26" over 700c is the tire options. With 26" you could use anything from a road slick to an aggro MTB tire. With 700c you're pretty much stuck using a road tire or maybe a cyclo-x tire, but you will not be able to get the width available in mountain tires. I think 700c tends to roll better, meaning when you get up to speed they hold momentum better than the smaller wheels. But I'm no physicist, so...that's up for debate.
The thing you should probably consider is the wheels themselves. If you're using loaded bags and probably a backpack, you may want to bulk up the wheels themselves with more spokes and heavy duty rims. When you're commuting you don't want light weight crap that could leave you stranded. You want a wheel that will be there when you need it. Ride 36 spokes, don't do double butted...go straight gauge and go thick. Again, you don't want to be left stranded by your bike.
