Course I knew this would stir the pot...
I have only pointed out one reality...that of visitors to NCDSA. It is a big deal - it is significant. I never said anything about better. I see a ton of opportunities for growth and I forsee a time when niche skateboarding turns into just plain old skateboarding.
There was a time when all you saw in the skate mags was vert...the videos were practically all vert and then WHAMMO things changed. Street took over...at the time before the change, though, most people couldn't visualize anything but vert.
My feeling remains the same: as soon as you expose a young or older skater to soft wheels, turny trucks and a big flexi ride, the are hooked. Of course, this doesn't happen to every skater (some are embarrassed to try or others just can't seem to enjoy the feeling) but for many they truly LOVE the experience. This is growing exponentially...every freakin' day.
Ditto for cones...
Skateboarding used to be about trying new things...about questioning things...about expanding your mind. It still is this, if you want it to be.
It's like the two shoe sales people who arrive in Africa:
#1 salesperson: this is a hopeless situation, no one wears shoes
#2 salesperson: what an opportunity, no one wears shoes!

Do you guys belive that there is huge interest in slalom and downhill racing? Seriously Micheal these are fringe activities. I applaud your effort but the numbers still don't work out for me. In my core group of "skate friends" like 6 or 7 maybe are into racing while the vast majority are into skateboarding that does not involve racing. In a way this Niche of skating barely exists. Just look at the numbers. I honestly doubt 1% of skaters are into slalom and downhill. Hell longboarding in general.
And as for NCDSA outranking Thrasher you may be right. But what criteria is the "betterness" based on? Ncdsa is cool and interactive. It could be the fact that it gets so many hits because Chaput logs on and posts 1,000,000,000 times a day. Keep it up!
A lot of you guys think there is some sort of conspiracy against racing in general. You ask why the major mags don't cover it when the answer is pretty clear, there is not a lot of interest in it. Look at the numbers. Are there 1 million slalom racers out there. I seriously doubt there is eveen 10,000 in the world.

There are a lot of things I can't post...they are way too confidential, businesswise. However, the way the rest of the skate media acts, you'd think this niche skate world barely exists....that's a shame, because the numbers say otherwise.
If and when the truth is finally exposed, people will be shocked.

you think it's stranger that more people who read thrasher.com are actually out skateboarding while readers of ncdsa talk about it on the internet?

If you have visited my blog the last few days, you know that I have mentioned a website called www.silktide.com. This site analyzes websites and ranks them.
Would it surprise you to know that in terms of ranking, NCDSA.COM ranks higher than thrashermagazine.com?
If you have any surprises, feel free to post....but they must be backed up by fact.

Yes, absolutement!
Whatever can do to help, F. There is a great longboard scene here in Toronto made up of some truly amazing folks. Check out this website: http://ontskate.proboards38.com/
Also, my 10 year old son and I are planning a road trip to PEI this summer. We will be going in July. We'll also visit Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. We plan on handing out mags, stickers and spreading the word on longboarding, slalom etc. etc. Should be fun...can't believe we have a 12 day pass!
Please email me F, and let's plan this out...

Slalom why's and not's

Why's 1)BBQ in Salem, Oregon 2)turning- a LOT 3)It feels REALLY GOOD!
Not's 1)You ate too much BBQ in Salem, Oregon to ride 2)You ride one of those fancy "trick" boards that has trucks that don't turn and the mainstream skate industry let you down. 3)You never went fast and had trucks that turn and had wheels with traction and you just can't imagine it since "the Man" of the mainstream industry does'nt want you to have knowledge of that experience. It's all a part of the Majestry 12 program, the government has remote viewing telepathics who succeed in erasing the image of slalom or kinethetic memory of it from your brain. Yeah, that's it, really, don't fool yourselves that's not. I swear on my Mom's bathroom. Really. I mean really.- P

I went into a skate shop a couple of yearrs ago looking for a slalom set up. To the shops credit, they did carry a good selection of carving boards, but when I inquired about a slalom deck, the owner tried to get me on a 42" pintail with exskates! He told me he regularly ran cones on a 6' center on a deck just like it.

this is on the world's wires....
Halifax mayor says sorry for skateboard stunt Halifax -- He may have looked like a stunt man, but Mayor Peter Kelly's publicity stunt on a skateboard sans helmet forced him to apologize yesterday.
Mr. Kelly fell while skateboarding during a ceremony Wednesday on the Halifax Common.
"It was all in fun," said the father of two. "And there was no pain or aggravation other than maybe a bit of embarrassment for the fall and more importantly, the lack of common sense in not using a helmet and other protective gear." CP

When I picked up a slalom board back in 2001. I had to go through the internet to get my Turner from Howard Gordon. Down here in the Rio Grand Valley none of the shops carry slalom boards. Longboards can be found. Most of you know me from this site. Thank you to those slalom skaters who reached out and gave me all the info on the Slalom equipment back in 2001. I received emails from ARAB,Rene and Glen Schotwell all who pretty much guided me through slalom setups. Marcos was probably the first and fastest slalom skater I had ever seen back in 2001 in person. Here is hoping by the end of the year we will see more shops carrying slalom setups. My son Justin told us he found a ditch in L.A. near our last race. It was not a ditch. It was a aquaduct for big storms and o man that shot below and seeing him drop in this real big Concrete Wave I was thinking what a great shot for you. Silverfish was there and got great pics. You should ck it out,I was shocked he tried it and even more that he made it. It was a big wave 3 times overhead but it was concrete.
