I smell money. If this kid wanted money and exposure it looks like he got it.

How has life changed as the star of a show that, according to MTV, has been seen by 28.4 million total viewers?

Well, he has a ton of cash for starters.

well, Ryan Sheckler is officially a phenom...pass the Moutain Dew!

'Life of Ryan' packs crowds at tour stop
Sheckler's skateboarding takes backseat to sideshow drama
The Salt Lake Tribune
Salt Lake Tribune
Article Last Updated:09/22/2007 05:08:30 AM MDT

To be Ryan Sheckler at this weekend's AST Dew Tour stop in Salt Lake City is to be a teenage skateboarder turned rock star, in the eye of a storm with a 13-person MTV production crew following his every move.
Sheckler, who won X Games gold as a 13-year-old in 2003, is the top qualifier for tonight's skateboard park finals. He's also the star of the reality show "Life of Ryan," which explains the cameramen and producers in tow.
Everywhere Sheckler goes right now, the circus seems to follow, and production assistants scramble to get signatures on waivers of anyone who might wind up in the footage of a future episode.
The fans who shriek at the mention of his name and line up for autograph signings might as well be considered extras. Since its premiere in August, "Life of Ryan" is MTV's highest-rated new show of the year for viewers age 12 to 34.
"I think they wanted it to mostly be about how, on the road and everything, he's a superstar," friend and co-star Casey Feitler said, "but when he comes back home, he's just a normal kid and he's trying to hang out with his friends and do the normal high school thing."
This is Sheckler's first contest since the show's debut. Maybe it's no coincidence the stands were packed for Thursday's preliminaries, which Sheckler said he'd never seen before on the Dew Tour.
How has life changed as the star of a show that, according to MTV, has been seen by 28.4 million total viewers? "It's just crazy," Sheckler said. "I can't even skate around without girls going crazy. It's awesome."
The Dew Tour saw the potential for Sheckler to take skateboarding to new audiences and decided to come along for the ride.
"We're thrilled about it,'' said Wade Martin, the tour's president. "We've provided them a ton of access on site and in the events because we think it's a great thing for our tour and for action sports overall."
The show follows MTV's previous hits "Laguna Beach" and "The Hills" in glamorizing the life of an Orange County, Calif., teenager. What makes Sheckler's show interesting is that some episodes have included next to nothing about skateboarding.
There were deeply personal moments in one episode when Sheckler's father brought his new girlfriend to a family birthday party. Sheckler had to console his mother, Gretchen, and the sting of his parents' divorce was apparent.
"There's a few things that went out that kind of got me in some family drama and stuff behind the scenes with my dad and everything,'' Sheckler said. "But we still have a tight relationship with everyone and it'll pass. It's just TV."
Gretchen Sheckler said she didn't think the family side would be as interesting to producers.
"I really thought it was more about his life,'' she said, "and I think you always add an element of drama to things, and that did."
In another episode, Sheckler takes one of his friend's ex-girlfriends out on a date. Future episodes will focus on skateboarding, with Gretchen Sheckler saying, "The drama's gone."
The Sheckler phenomenon might have been best viewed through the eyes of three 14-year-olds - Devin Leibrand, Jessica Katwyk and Maegen Mounteer - who squeezed in to hug Sheckler as he fought through a crowd following Thursday's preliminaries.
Two production assistants trailed the crush and got the three girls, from Riverton and Herriman, to sign waivers allowing them to appear in an episode. The girls whipped out cell phones to call friends almost before the ink was dry.
After crossing paths with Sheckler earlier at the Gateway, the hug was more than they could have imagined. As far as the show, Leibrand said, "He's into his family and it's not all about the fame. He wants to be like a normal kid."
There's no mistaking Sheckler's greatness as a skateboarder. With the best qualifying run in the bag Thursday, he went out for a second run and launched into a backflip, shattering his board as he came down.
"What I admire most about Ryan is that at the core of everything that's going on, it's all based on the fact that he's one of the best skateboarders in the world,'' Martin said. "He's competitive as anyone out there and he wants to win."
Sheckler said the show was close to being picked up for a second season. As for the pitfalls of being a 17-year-old television star, Sheckler said "Life of Ryan" made sense for where he is at in his career. But fame does come with a price.
"The most normal part of my life is when I go to the beach at home,'' Sheckler said. "But still, it's hectic there. In a way, I signed up for this. It's a gift, you know, so I'm just going to play it out and see what happens

Thanks for that Dog Bowl footage, hc. I'd love to see "Polar Bear's" run without the falls. Hackett's run was pretty high-energy too. I remember the SkateBoarder mag caption for a photo of Hackett was something like "David Hackett attacked the bowl like a mad dog," which seems pretty appropriate. He definitely wasn't holding back. Cool find.

Anyhoos, I browsed it for only a few and plugged the DVD in AT MIDNITE> I was buggered tired but I couldn`t turn it off. Well, not until 2am. I looked at the DVD cover and saw there`s still another 1/2 hour on it. Super slick stuff, keep up the good, no, great work. Brady

"street" pros
On 9/15/2007 Steve C. wrote in from United States  (72.55.nnn.nnn)

If you look at most "street" pros today, most of them rip all around. The may not be freakishly good at vert, but they can most likely skate a ramp, ditch, park, pool, hill.........
It is the media that shows them as one dimensional. I saw some footage of the Baker team riding some parks in Oregon, and guess what, they pretty much rip. Reynolds and Dustin Dolin stick out. That Dolin kid rips pools and stuff. And I think this is mostly true across the board. And as far as one dimesionality I know lots of "old schoolers" that are pretty one dimensional.

Sheckler rips on transitions
On 9/15/2007 Rich Sayers wrote in from United States  (71.202.nnn.nnn)

Dave Hackett:
While there are many "one-dimensional" skaters that only do street, Sheckler knows how to skate bowls. I'm 45 years old and I like skateparks and pool skating a lot more than street style. On the two "Tony Hawks Secret Skatpark Tour" DVD's Sheckler's park skating is strong. Several old school pros state on Camera that they are impressed with Ryan's park skating. At the king-sized Haley Idaho skatepark Sheckler does an 8-foot air transfer from one bowl/flow area to another over Bam Margera's head as Bam stands between the bowls. Ryan the Gnar!

Hope all is well with you Dave! I was stoked when your loop cover ran in Concrete Wave.

Both Shecklers' parents should shut the F%#$ Up.

Nobody gives a S%# who they are or what they think.

In fact, the three biggest bummers in skateboarding right now
are:

1) One Dimensional skateboarders.
2) Parents of One Dimensional skateboarders.
3) People who will watch drama and pay for numbers 1 and 2.

Well, I would to crash at your place Sparky!
it was great to finally meet you!

what an ASR...there is definitely change in the air...and I think we're just seeing the dawning of a new era...not that you would know anything has changed if you pick up most of the other mags. Sure, they do a great job of covering street and vert...but come on gang, it's 2007!!!!

This weekend, Maryhill...two weeks from now The Worlds...60 people showed up to skate the friday night of ASR....all on longboards. Hell, 250 showed up to skate Toronto last Saturday all on longboards.

Change is happening...it's been happening for years and most in the skate industry are puzzled why short boards are in such stagnation.

I heard from a very reliable source one company in particular is sitting on a whackload of short boards...$300,000 worth. They are willing to give a 50% discount to get rid of them...Can you say GLUT!

yes, there is a glut on the marketplace - meanwhile, the guys at the longboard companies can't make them fast enough!

Hi Michael,

Finally got to meet you, and i had a blast that night at the Vintage Skateboard Auction. Met alot of folks locally that were "untouchable" legends living on the east coast, well i have skated with a few since. All the vibe and comraderie and stoke that i had always felt all these years skating with my friends and the occasional "registered am" or what have you, i felt the same way with these guys. Needless to say.... I'M NOT MOVIN'. I have yet to take my own photos of the "collection" i purchased. My insurance company was clueless as to how to underwrite it, but let's just say that i payed an 8th of what the appraiser put out there. My pad is on the beach, and anytime you come down hit me up, it's free. (a hell of alot cheaper than the hotels downtown, or in north county) I am having the time of my life, and i just wanted to thank you for inviting me out to the Auction, i think i may have met somebody that knows somebody that robbed somebody so that i may get my peepers into ASR this winter. maybe i'll see ya there.

It sure makes for good tv---- I watched last night. What a clusterf@#k that family is.

God talk about drama! But such is life for the families of the rich and famous. But, it makes for good TV. How much of this stuff is real and how much is done solely for publicity. It makes me wonder.

Want to be famous and rich, well bring on the drama. ANd I hear you Mike when you say this is a bad idea from a lot of angles. But with the ratings, and this crap, the money is bound to roll in. And that is what certain people want. Drama=cash. And cash is all some people care about. Keep it coming! I love this crap and I am sure the parties involved will profit in some way.

Note: you sign a release to appear on TV, standard practice. So this guy signed a release so I bet he is getting something out of it. Bad publicity, good publicity, who cares as long as people watch. I love it.

Shape Magazine, September 2007:

Does anyone but me find it interesting that the divorce (levied by Gretchen) comes on the heals of $16,000.00 in plastic surgery that I paid for. For all you young and old women who read Shape Magazine....lies and more lies. Gretchen did not lose that weight by natural means as "she stated in the magazine".....and she has never trained 60 minutes a day running followed by 30 minutes of strength training followed by palates followed by yoga. Sorry to be the bear of bad news.....but her body is the result of Liposuction, Breast Implants and Botox. Those three items are what aided to this unbelievable transformation. I will post pre and post pics soon.

more RS drama...this time from papa...

Mr. S. decided to put up a website called gretchensheckler.com.

It was changed after a few lawyers probably made some calls...but, thanks to the internet and the fun guys over at slap message boards, you can read what Mr. S. thinks of the show...

Gretchen WALSH (Sheckler)......

Home Page
BLACK HEART
Hello and Very Good Day To All,

I would like to thank you all for taking valuable time out of your busy day to visit the "unofficial site" of Gretchen Sheckler. It is with great pain that I generate a site like this but it has become a necessity and the only way that I can constructively and affectively combat the lies and deceit that my dis-loyal X Wife is portraying on National Television about me. God Bless the Internet!

I was with Gretchen Walsh (I won't call her Sheckler any longer) for over half of the time that I have walked the glorious earth (2+Decades). 22 years to be exact and of that almost 18 of loyal (my part) marriage. My marriage to Gretchen was one of devotion.....and that can't be contested....contrary to the BULL s#@! that Gretchen's sister Rhonda and 3rd or 4th husband Chris Larum (Chris you talk way too much when you're drunk.....to people you don't know......just shut the f#@! up!) are spreading! For heavens sake take a look at my resume and tell me where an opportunity to be less than loyal and/or faithful ever existed? While Gretchen was traveling with Ryan, living in the finest hotels, eating the finest cuisine, rolling first class (in most cases) and riding coat tails to VIP events and sleeping until 12:00 noon I was caring for my companies and family. Yes! It's no surprise now but I have 2 additional unbelievable children (Shane and Kane) that I was caring for. Baths, homework, reading, wrestling and thousands of other things including but not limited to laundry, meals and getting them to school was and remains my first priority in life! My unwavering dedication and unparalleled devotion to my children is second to none!! Make no mistake about that.

Gretchen has the same fundamental problem (illness) that many parents of athletes and/or movie stars acquire. She became so used to Ryan's lime light that she failed to realize that she had 2 other children and a husband at home. In other words my x-wife failed to figure out how to turn the switch back to reality upon coming home! I have attached my resume (self promoting....Yes it is!) but it serves a point that MTV failed to mention in this so called reality show. I continuously put forth 110% and nothing less for my family!!

MTV made a decision to not to put me in the promotional poster or introduction of the show! They made a decision to depict me as an absentee father to my children……knowing that I would die for all of them at nanoseconds notice! There must have been thousands and thousands of ways for them to let you viewing public know that there was a divorce but that I was a driving force in my son's career and a guiding light for the other two. It's sad and pathetic....but the damage is now done and it's not all MTV's fault. I'm sure most of you have seen that Gretchen Walsh (Sheckler) is the executive Co-Producer. Think she had anything to do with the spinning and/or dissemination of material that turned this into a public divorce show??

THE SHOW:
First of all let the record show that Gretchen divorced me. I know she cried pathetically to Ryan and Shane on the show about the divorce taking her by surprise.....but how can that be when she was the "petitioner" of the divorce in the first place? She filed for divorce over one year before she filmed her "non emmy" winning cryfest on national television (see divorce petition above..look closely at the Petitioner).

The show is s#@! and filled with creative editing/cuts to make some look good and some look bad. It is NOT REALITY people and it never will be! Lastly (for now), the viewing public should know that Christi is not the MTV "SPONSORED HOME WRECKER”. She was not a part of the divorce and came into my life 6-8 months after! She is a beautiful woman and an innocent bystander in this mess of s#@!! Christi's part in this whole thing started because I wanted to throw a birthday party for Kane!
Gretchen had no intention of having a party. Christi and I decided as mature adults to host a knock out party and invite anyone who wanted to come. We realized that it would be a sensitive subject. We realized that some of my X-in-laws may not come. That was their prerogative and they could have thrown 40 micro parties for that matter if they so choose...we didn't care. BTW and HERE ME ON THIS. WE PLANNED THE PARTY WITHOUT MTV. MTV INVITED THEMSELVES and brought all the creative/editing drama that I made reference to earlier with them. There is a lot more to be said…….DON'T BE HATING ON CHRISTI!!!!!

more coming...
