not only is this latest issue awesome in content, but the cover is the best to date.
mitchell is one of the most honable skateboarding role models ever.....ripping all terrains, wearing protective gear, helping others, smiling and showing how raw talent and training bring huge positives to our sport.
HE ROCKS and the color/artistry of the photograph is beyond fabulous!
keep it up. i always drool at the thought of reading my next issue and store the old, molested copies to re-read in my old age.......that'll be 90 in a wheel chair? if so, i'll still be smiling!
CHEERS!

Thanks for your post PSK
It's obvious to me that what is working for most of the other skate magazines, continues to work well. And there's no refuting the large numbers that the TV networks are deriving from skateboard coverage.

My answer to all the hype and myopia is do CW. Some agree with what's inside, some are puzzled. The key thing for me is that niche skateboarding can no longer be ignored. We've got our on fun cooking!

independant lens?
On 11/22/2007 PSR wrote in from United States  (75.68.nnn.nnn)

The Scariest thing in Micheal's last posts is this: Thrasher is 'the small guy' amoungst 'The Suits' that've moved in, camped out (in luxo condos, no doubt), and taken over the Media of our favorite boardsports. It's also the one that had Skateboarders directly involved, yet they still portrayed only their 'style' of skater, unless the event[s] was [were] newsworthy enough to provoke commentary. This isn't to say that boardsports aren't covered well by the media, only that the perspective lens Of that media is Narrow in Scope compared to the actually Activity Level or variety of 'style' that's actualy out there. Oh, and that the 'suits' bring into play not only a skewed veiw, but a skewed set of monetary values, to the portrayal of boardsports, which in turn (much like the current Stock Market!) puts overvalue on certain products or athaletes, while ignoring or minimizing others. It WARPS the Truth...
Not lies, per say, just twists in the perceptions of the public-at-large as they look thru this oversized but narrow-lensed scope that portrays boardsports in it's favored image.

I'm buying CW from now on...

who owns what...
On 11/22/2007 Michael Brooke wrote in from Canada  (67.70.nnn.nnn)

Thought you might find this amusing...stolen from my blog...

Just who owns what where…
November 22nd, 2007
Concrete Wave is owned by me, Michael Brooke. I am based in Thornhill (2 minutes north of Toronto) Canada.

When you call 866-678-9283, you get me. There are no other owners.

I thought it might be interesting to showcase who else is involved in skate magazine publishing.

First the other North American independents:

Juice - Terri Craft - owner - California/North Carolina
Concussion - Davoud - he’s one of the owners…not sure who else - California
Automatic - Michael Migdol - California
Focus - Florida
For the Krew - Florida

Next up, the semi-independents

Concrete - Kevin Harris - British Columbia - note: this magazine is only available in Canada and was once called Concrete Powder(it used to cover snowboarding). Kevin is a former pro that built the Ultimate Skateboard Distribution empire.
Colors - while at one time this was fully independent, it is now partially owned by one of Canada’s other west coast distributors

Then comes the big indies UPDATED…

The Skateboard Mag - California - made up and owned by former members of Transworld skateboarding. The original investor was a magazine publisher. I believe they are now free and clear and 100% independent.

Next, the empires…

Thrasher/Slap - California. These are owned by High Speed Productions. As many of you know, Thrasher has a long history with Independent Trucks. Fausto Vitello, the founder of Thrasher (who passed away last year at 57) helped create the Independent truck and worked closely with NHS (Santa Cruz). Fausto and his gang also developed a number of brands that I am sure you know well: Venture Trucks, Lucky Bearings, Hubba Wheels, City Skateboards, Think Skateboards. These brands are part of Street Corner Distribution. Another company, Deluxe handles these well-known brands: Krooked, Real, Anti-Hero, Thunder Trucks and Spitfire Wheels.

It’s somewhat complicated to know exactly who owns what, but there are definitely connections between the magazines and the products. Amazing.

SBC CANADA - Toronto - SBC Media

This publishing empire was founded by Steve Jarrett. I am not how much he owns of it (perhaps the whole damn thing!) Whatever the case, the titles are THICK!

Toronto, Canada based SBC MEDIA GROUP (SBC Media Inc. and SBC Events Inc.) is one of the world’s leading action sports lifestyle media and content creators with 10 market leading magazine titles. SBC’s magazines and proprietary youth lifestyle events reach over 2 million youth and young adults annually.

SBC consumer magazine titles:

SBC magazines are distributed via paid national newsstand in Canada, and select U.S.A markets; paid subscription; specialty action sports retail shops; and targeted action sports lifestyle promotions and events.

SBC trade magazine titles include:
SBC Business - Canadian Snow/Skate/Wake/Surf.

SBC events include:
Wakestock Action Sports & Music Festival, the world’s largest wakeboarding event, part of the WWA World Series. Toronto, Canada.

SBC client services include:

WB (Whistler Blackcomb) magazine.

Transworld Bonnier - Sweden
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bonnier Tower in StockholmBonnier (also the Bonnier Group) is a privately-held Swedish media group of 150 companies operating in 21 countries. It is controlled by the Bonnier family. The company was started in 1804 by Gerhard Bonnier in Copenhagen, Denmark when Bonnier published his first book. In January 2007, the Bonnier Magazine Group agreed to acquire 18 magazines that Time Inc. was divesting. The estimated price was US$ 225 million in cash and the assumption of about US$ 42 million in unfulfilled subscription liabilities (subscriptions already paid but not yet delivered.) The magazines in the package employed 550 people and included Popular Science, Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, Ski, Yachting, and Transworld Skateboarding, as well as 11 other titles that were part of Time Inc.’s Time4 Media Group. Also included were Parenting, and Babytalk, which were part of the Parenting Group. That price was believed to be a multiple of about 11 times cash flow for a group that had net income of around US$ 20 million and revenue of around $230 million. “We think we did a good deal, and we think Time did as well,” said Jonas Bonnier, head of Bonnier Magazine Group. Transworld's 2006 revenues: 24 million

Michael,
Barbara Logan of Logan Earthski skateboard company has passed.
She was known affectionately to all of us as "Mother Earthski".
Active in our sport in the 60s & 70s...she commanded the respect
from greats such as Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Torger Johnson,Bob Biniak
Laura Thronhill and others who all road for her team.
A tribute in your publication would be of great importance in showing
the rest of the skateboard community the impact she had on skateboarding.
Respectfully,

Real Cool Day ......today
On 11/13/2007 Rene CANNONBALL Carrasco wrote in from United States  (71.129.nnn.nnn)

-----------------------------------

Had a real cool day today.....11/12/2007.

Richy and I were asked to talk to a big group of
"at risk kids" who were bussed in from Los Angeles
to the Newport Beach Sports Museum.

The Museum has a lot of rad sports memorabilia from
the Lakers, the Dodgers, the Los Angeles Kings, etc.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Maria took pictures and also brought a box of 'Concrete Wave'
Buyers Guides to be handed out to the children, to introduce kids
to various kinds of skateboards -she also brought lot's of
skateboard stickers provided by
SK8KINGS.COM & KHIRO SKATEBOARD PRODUCTS.

We screened an OFF THE RAILS TV video of
*Richy demonstrating & explaining 360 spinning -
*and the Channel 9 TV Sports Central segment of the
feature story on the Flying Carrasco Brothers.

All this on a 10 foot viewing screen was pretty cool.

The kids were quiet and patient when the video started -
and they LOUDLY CHEERED when they saw Richy doing all those
variations of SPINNING 360'S !

When the children saw the Carrasco Brothers slaloming -
in the 'Sports Central' video - you could hear
lot's of "ooooo's" & "ahhhhh's" from the young crowd !

Afterwards, we did a little History Lesson on Skateboarding -
( -I had my steel-wheeled 2x4 and Clay Wheel wood board
from the era when I started skateboarding -
-and Richy showed his modern 360 KING freestyle board and
also his High-Tech Slalom racing board. )
- we then we finished up with question & answer time.

We did give them an extra treat though !

Richy demonstrsated by doing some 360'S right there
( -on a basketball court nearby )
for all the children to see.

I know these children will never forget the great time
they had today - learning, and enjoying
World Class Skateboarding right in front of them !

.....-Rene Carrasco - FOREVER SKATEBOARDING.

-It was real trippy going home today...'deja vu' maybe....
it felt just like THE OLD DAYS - 30 YEARS AGO - - -
when Richy, David and I were performing all those
PEPSI COLA SKATEBOARD TEAM DEMONSTRATIONS !

...Wow ! .....Way cool !
