To All My Rowdie And Not So Rowdie Longboard and Skate Buddies: Pop Update: Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts sent for my father Tom Karr while he dealt with his heart attack and went through emergency bypass surgery. The "Man of Steel" (the name I like to call him) has been moved to a Cardiac Rehab facility and is doing great. He is bugging the crap out of the doctors to let him go back to work and told me that his physical therapists were two "cute young ladies". I guess he's feeling better, huh? He won't be home for Christmas but my brother and I have decided to "break him out" that day.
Random Thoughts: I am sure their are many colder places in the US, Canada, and around this skating globe of ours but DANG IT'S COLD IN NORTH CAROLINA RIGHT NOW! I am itching to skate but right now at night its in the teens and somewhat windy! I miss the summer!
Some of the local crew has taken a page out of Miko's book and have been hitting a Parking Deck late at night in Charlotte. I am planning on hooking up with them next week and see what it's like to bomb the curves of this multi-story parking garage. Needs to warm up first.
One of your younger longboard crew regulars has the right idea about getting people involved in the sport. He has been inviting at least one new person a month to our night sessions to see what it is all about. He has taken the time to put together a "loaner board" from spare stuff we all had (I "donated" a set of Wicked Wonder longboard wheels) that he lets the newbies use. It is a great way to expose others to longboarding, carving, and just crusing. I keep a spare helmet in the truck and usually take a couple of different boards from my quiver to the sessions for people to try as well. The thing we have all tried to keep in mind is with the new people we can't put them in a situation where they are in over their heads. The good news is most of our night session spots offer a variety of grades for all skill levels. If you don't have anyone to skate with then go find someone and teach them how to ride!
And last my by far, not the least: I wish for all of you a blessed and joyous Christmas/holiday season and a prosperous and healthy New Year.

Longboard Crew: To all of you who have said prayers and sent good vibes for my Dad I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. He is doing well after the bypass and according to the doctors and great nursing staff at the hospital, he should have a very good recovery. Right now they are dealing with some kidney issues but they seem to be getting that under control. Dad just wants to go home now! (He is facing two weeks of transitional care though.)
Many of you have followed my posts and know that I returned to skating about 2 years ago. I am amazed at the friendship, support, and compassion that the participants in this forum/sport and the others show for one another. Though I have ever actually met very few of you I count you all in my greater circle of friends.

I think you took a tiny bit of what I said and blew it out of proportion. I never said all kids are sponsor hungry, but the fact is kids ask if I'm sponsored and ask how they can get sponsored, etc. When I mentioned to some kids that "someday" (after I finish my masters, etc.), I'd like to open a local shop, kids started asking me if I'd have a team and if they could be on it!! I tell them to skate for fun and relax. That's what skating should be, imho.
That's not saying that people often dream of achieving the status of best they can be. Heck, I want to be the best skater/husband/teacher/ all around good guy I can be and often work hard at it. If people don't want that (or something similar), there's something wrong. (I wish you could hear the lecture I gave my first pd. class two days ago. LOL)

Hey, i am 17 at the mment so see myself in a good enough place to argue this point about sponsorship. No-one i know really wants or thinks it is possible to be sponsored, even the gy who got offered sponsorship after ending in the top 5 (shortboard) of a contest at Epic skatepark in Birmingham, UK. He turned the sponsorship down as a matter of fact, not because he isnt into skating(he goes sating every single day), but bcause he didnt deem himself good enough to be sponsored. My main point here is that "kids" aren't as depicted by all as sponsor-grabbing shallow fools, only a very select few who are already on some type of sponsordhip deal are. I bet most of you used to (if not still do) dream of playing American(grr) football (don't steal the name! soccer is not football! :P ) or baseball professionally, does that mean you were constantly begging to get onto a pro team? I doubt(hope) not, and it is the same situation with my generation.
I hope i didnt waffle too much and lose you all in the process, replies on a postcard (lol) tom

If I'm understanding the discussion (it's still early) I'd like to comment.
I agree that longboarders, etc. are a little more laid back and that's a good thing. I think a lot of it comes with time. Though I've been skating for most of my life, most longboarders and slalomers I've met have been doing it a lot longer than me (I started skating in the mid-80s as a pt. of reference). We know that there's stress in life and skating is a great escape from it. My personal philosophy about skating, which I often tell my students who skate (they always are asking if I'm sponsored and how they can get sponsored, etc.), is "Why 'take it seriously' when if makes what a stress-reliever a source of stress?".

Dudes, I think I got waht HerbN's saying...serious our not, it's all cool.
Today has been a day of pressure and stress for me. My Father had a cardiac cath that showed he had multiple blockages and requires quintuple bipass tomorrow. I will be absent from the forum for a while but will check back when possible.
To all of you in Longboarding, Slalom, Sliding, and other forums, your posts have motivated me to get back into skating "seriously"! Thanks for the stoke dudes. Herbn, keep up the stoke dude.

i'm glad your understanding what he's saying fatboy. not really sure myself what would cause his confusion. you click on slalom - you get slalom. you click on banks & ditches - you get banks and ditches. you click on longboarding - you get longboarding. i don't see anywhere you can click that says "uptight".

So what you're saying is that longboarders are a little more tolerant of other longboarders if they post in a knowledgeable manner, yes?
We are generally more laid back about stuff.
I think that's a good thing.

i just was also a bit confused to what this page was supposed to be about,so reading back a bit i found a few thanksgiving posts and that kind of questionable post that seems to say go read other websites if you're serious about longboarding, basicly a kind of insulting plug, that says if you go to this website (instead of the others mentioned) you're not serious about longboarding.Well you gotta look at it from a serious yet not serious viewpoint. While alot of this website has to do with equipment, and not necessarily doing the latest greatest hippist tricks down the biggest gaps and handrails,a lot of the riding is still very deadly serious, but at the same time is really just rolling down a street, street skating (shortboards) COULD be taken exactly the same, but it usually isn't. You could still suck, but as long as you sem to make a point,be it about loose trucks vs tight trucks,or what are the fastest bearings or whatever,it matters less in longboarding whether you suck or not.

The other night I was walking through the basement on my way to the shop to work on some new slide gloves when my teenage daughter yells: Hey Dad, the boys on Laguna Beach are riding those old styled boards like you ride". It was some reality TV show on MTV and they were showing footage of the two of the "main characters" carving up a really sweet looking hill over looking the ocean. They appeared to be riding Sector 9 typed boards. It was cool to see that type of riding on TV. At least for the moment I was cool in the eyes of my 16 year old because "the hot guys " on that show were riding the "old styled boards" like I ride. Of course that coolness disappeared immediately upon my telling her she needed to clean her room! Oh well, it's a moment I guess...ha ha.
Any of you California dudes know what road that was? It looked sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!
