I am just wondering if anyone has got a clue as to how many people do longboarding, downhill skating, and maybe even slalom skating. And where about these longboarders are.
Have a good new year, thank you very much, ankan

Reading the "Law" posts below leads me to write of an incident I had about 15 years ago...
When I leved in OC,MD in the mid-80s, skateboarding was illegal everywhere but the local skatepark, illegal that is during the summer season and legal during the "off-season". Well, me, being an informed consumer, knew the dates when skating became legal in the Fall and Illegal in the Spring.
Anywho, knowing that after 12midnight THAT NIGHT was when skating "anywhere" became legal, I went for a cruise. While skating down the boardwalk, a cruiser coming up the other direction focused on me. When I turned to the right, the cruiser turned to confront me, and when I turned to the left it followed. Well, of course the officer stopped me and gave me a good chewing because of the apparent laws inplace. Not wanting to create any friction I said little.
So when he was done, I told him that I was under the impression that after 12midnight skating was legal anywhere...so he dug out his black book and looked it up.
If you could've only seen the look on his face. It was pretty obvious when he read the statute. And with a drop in his voice (and ego), he replied "I guess you're right!" and without saying much more, we parted.
Believe me, that felt sooooooooo GOOD!

We have trouble with the 'Old Bill' over this side of the pond aswell, this summer I had several run in's with her majestys boys in blue - most would back off when confrounted with the law as it is in this country(I'm not sure of the wording but we are allowed to sk8 any where it is legal for a bicycle to go i.e on the roads) although there are those forthright officers (Jobsworth wankers) who take it upon them selves to try there best to protect me from myself (I am only 28 and they must feel I am not old enough to judge for myself what is safe and what is not!) and will make a point of f**king with you! I think half the problem is that any body going for a job in the 'peelers' has got to be more interested in power that helping people and this leads to abuse to the system and an attitude that doe's not help the public in genral. I say let anarchy rule, make me king and I will make sure drugs are legal, milk cartons always open easyily and it is illegal to interupt a run. ANyone vote for me (Even if you don't I have a cousin who works for the Florida State Senete Hopefully Jed will be able to help out!)

San Diego Skateboard Law

Perhaps the law that was broken was:
section 84.12 (a) of the City of San Diego Municipal Code states: "It is unlawful for any person riding on roller skates or by means of coaster, skateboard, toy vehicle, or similar device, to go upon an open roadway in the City of San Diego, or upon the sidewalk or public plaza in any business district, or upon any inclined surface area of any City-owned or privately owned parkade ... "
By the way, the San Diego City Council is considering changing the law to be similar to Portland Oregon's law.

We are blessed in Oregon to have some reasonable laws and police when it comes to skateboarding. Some examples:
State law: Nothing prohibits skateboarding. It doesn't exist. Skateboards are in a no-man's land. Not a vehicle, not a pedestrian, not a bicycle.
Portland: Specifically allows skateboarding on streets. Designated "skateboard friendly" streets for commuting. Need to follow bicycle type rules: stay to right, follow traffic signs, yeild to pedestrians.
Oregon State University: Allows skateboarding on most sidewalks and streets. Must not speed, must yeild to pedestrians, no "stunts".
Washington County: I have applied for and received several cost-free "block party" permits for skateboard slalom races where we close the entire street for a whole day to run races.
Clark County (Washington, just across river from Portland): Sheriff deputy called dispatch to find us a good skatboard site when the security guard was kicking us out of the park-and-ride parking lot.
Richland Washington: Closed a street for us to run a race on, provided barricades. No cost, no insurance, nothing.
Mt Tabor Park: Upper streets are closed every day. Lower streets closed every Wed night. Longboarders bombing the hills every night. Slalom race practices without hassles.
New state law (Jan 1 2004): Skateboarders under the age of 16 on streets and other public property (parks, etc) must wear helmets. (Favorable interpretation: It is allowable to skateboard on streets and other public property, otherwise why would there be a law requiring a helmet when doing so?)

According to my ticket that I got in San Diego at the ASR show, Skating is a crime. I got an $80 ticket for crusiing in the street on my longboard, when I was doing so safely.

Skateboarding Criminal

Rednecks don't rule as they would have you to believe...
In h0dad's town there are two sides to the skating "problem".
On one side are the council, designating no-skate zones from an ivory tower. On the other side are the cops on the ground who make their own priorities from a more informed position..
Cops here also recognise that skating's cathartic for many youths, and for some, fills a gap which may otherwise be filled with more criminal acts.
Security guards here are only interested in fulfilling their contracts impeccably, ie. ensuring that no grommits wipe out themselves or private property on their watch. If one can work in with that then one may session many spots unmolested.

Tammy, there is an excellent resource for longboard equipment in the DC area. Boziboards stocks some of the best stuff that even a skater can afford. Put your trust in Jeff and he will set you up right.

I live in the Washington DC area (Arlington), and am looking for someone to help me get started. Can you actually take lessons for skateboarding?? I am a little "older" (like, NOT 14).. and figure it's never too late to start.. any ideas? Or should I just go the store, and trust the 16 year old customer service guy to sell me a board? And then what do I do?? I used to have one of these when I was 13. Please e-mail me!! ~Tammy

Skateboarding is illegal on the streets here in Colorado as well, but most cities do not enforce it. I live in Fort Collins and I see the cops all the time and they are always cool and wave, etc. I have skated the roads here since the early 80's when I moved here. The real problem is with the CSU police(the older full-time ones) who are on some sort of power trip, and occasionally, the rent-a cops that patrol the parking garages. Currently however, the garage attendant is cool and skates himself. On at least 4 occasions I can think of we have had huge car-loads (2 cars)of skaters doing our typical late-night hill-bombing missions to ride hills we cannot run during normal day-time traffic. We were car shuttling a big hill on the south side of town and the multiple cop cars pulled us right over after several runs. Long-story short; they thought it was cool and wanted to know more about the boards. THey said "yeah,.good time to do it" (it was like 1 a.m.) DE

Yea, Mick, skateboarding is illegal on our city streets, town ordinance. It is also illegal on our state roads, state law, and it's totally illegal on our university campus, dicks law. Where o where are we supposed to ride? I am father, husband, business owner and a hardcore skate criminal. I commit skate crimes against humanity on a daily basis. When I say "bomb hills not countries", I mean it in a brutal, take no prisoners, show no quarter kind of way. If I am ever cought, and they may throw me in with Malvo and Bush, please someone look after my longboards for me, I may never see the black of asphalt again.
