Hey Devo, You mean Ocean Beach, San Diego? That place with the concrete park that is always being sessioned by at least one girl? Or do you mean Ocean Beach, San Francisco, a really cold, windy, rocky, surf break that is not for the weak at heart or anyone allergic to sharks? I'm sorry, I wasn't listening.

Hi Devo, Wish I could make it out for a trip to Vancouver, it sounds like pure heaven. Pardon my ignorance but I have a question for you or any other longboarder here: what do you do with your longboards when you are in a skatepark or other spot that has skateable features besides just a sloped hill? I've never been on a longboard or seen one in action, so I was just wondering how you like to make use of those "flowy" places as you put it...

Any girls out there who like skating flowy oldschoolish parks? I'm from southern new jersey and somehow along travels of the wind experienced pretty close to the core the gut of oldschool skating via venice beach.....and now I find myself in mellow sunny ocean beach, ca. I seek a road trip to vancouver. I want the trip to last a month....or more. Wheather it's taking time to get there, or hauling ass and experiencing as much locally as possible. Vancouver seems like a mecca to my amazement. The first day I was on the internet I saw pictures of British Columbia skate parks and almost felt ill in joy. then later finding out its beautiful and interesting and full of art. I know theres some other girl out there who will stumble upon ncdsa.com and seek to see vancouver. It doesn't matter where your from or where your living. I have more respect for boarders outside of california(not that i dont respect californians)Less exposure drives a deeper passion. Guys welcome also but at least one girl is needed. I have never skated with a girl who was TRUELY into it besides being a street skater, so this ultimate trip seeks ultimate cargo. I'm 22. This posting is valid untill I live in vancouver.

Hey!
I'm a college student in Pittsburgh, and I've been skateboarding, but i'm not really improving so I wanna give this sport a try. I was wondering, what boards are good? like what size would be nice? i'm 5'1, so I don't feel that something like 36" would be a good size for me. But then again it's also difficult to find a small board. If anybody could give me advice I would appreciate it.
If any girls ride in pittsburgh, do tell. I'd be interested in going out for a run.

Oops, I should have posted my setup before now, how could I neglect that!? Alva '77 reissue deck in Maple (7.75" x 29.5"), Tracker Midtracks, BDS 95A 64mm dub-cons, Z-speed ABEC 3 bearings. After the lessons on Sat. a guy at the Endless Grind shop in Raleigh moved the washers that were on either side of the bearings to the same side and tightened the wheels down just a tad to slow them up. Took the board back out to the street yesterday but didn't really notice a big difference. Then again I was taking it easy because my shin hurt a little bit. Do you all think I should get some softer wheels to be on the safe side? The beautiful thing about this cul-de-sac is that there are no houses on it, nothing at all. So far only two cars have gone past on the cross street and I don't think the drivers even noticed me either time because I was so far down the opposite way. Oh, and during a spot-scouting drive yesterday I found an abandoned house out in the country with a pool...that was SQUARE! DAMMIT! lol It's good to hear i'm not alone in fakie discomfort, hehe. That will be the first and maybe only thing I'll work on at the next visit to Ye Olde local outdoor park. If the dang park even opens for the season before May, the city is acting like it's too broke to operate it. Crazy. I'm going to quit ranting now and go read the new CW buyer's guide. Happy skating and THANKS for the advice and stories so far! You all are the coolest. =-)

Touche' on the wheel selection! I was thinking Beth should get 95's or 92's for that skatelite, but you beat me to it. Beth-both Bulldog and ABEC 11 make some nice old school looking wheels if you want to keep with your look. :) I don't care what anyone says riding fakie is hard, it took me forever to get comfy with it. Best advice I got "riding faking is just turning your head". And I'm totally with you guys that some of the best places to ride were created for cars. I don't get too adventurous, but I have found some mellow downhill runs that I can hit early or during the work day that are sweet without too much traffic. I's the one perk for working out in the suburbs.

Let's see, you need your 99A's for concrete, 97A'z for wood, 95A'z for Skatelite, 86A's for the front truck, 80A's for smooth backs, 78A's for rough or steep, in Avalons and Cambrias... Are you broke yet? Beth, keep progressing slowly in the park. Each day you learn one thing, you will be stoked. Yeah, I'm down here in SoCAL. My biggest dillemma is WHICH park to skate. Free? Close? Lit? Vert? Hips? OK, I'm spoiled. Too bad it's rained so much this year. Oh yeah, I left out Indoors. Cul-de'sacs are good for skating. You're lucky to have one. I set the cones up in the middle of the street and make the cars slow down and go to one side or other. I just can't have super-wide offsets or I get a flat cone.

Hi everyone, Greta, sorry you got rained out. I'll send some anti-rain vibes your way. We're starting a stretch of good weather today thru Sat. or so the weatherman says. I'm going to hit the cul-de-sac again before work. Oh yes, I wear a helmet, wrist guards and elbow pads - safety over style any day! LOL Lynn, sounds like you had the perfect weekend. It must be nice to have people to skate with of any age. What is launching over a cone? (I'm ignorant hehe). Are you in SoCal? The lessons in Raleigh didn't go quite as well as hoped - the skatepark is indoors and all skatelite, so it was wayyyy too slick for me. Had trouble rolling fakie thru transistions and kept bailing. The third time I jumped off wrong and twisted my leg a bit, not enough to sideline me totally but it did have me limping all day Sunday and a bit yesterday. Feels fine today though. But now I know what to work on at the local metal ramp skatepark this weekend! Take care all and keep posting those skating adventures!

I skated and surfed so much this weekend, I have elbow pad tan. The waves were good both mornings, and the water is so clear because nobody's been in. I skated OB park on Friday at lunch hour with my work buddy. I solidified roll-ins over coping, but it was at the 3 foot mark. I also finally learned how to launch over a cone and not freak out mid-air. Saturday and Sunday were cone days with my nephew Sean. He's getting so good, it almost...ALMOST makes you want one of your own. Did I say Almost? (see Hulk below) Can't wait to see all you Southern Belles! I hear you're gonna show us a real good time! Beth, that sounds RAD. New asphalt is the best! Promise me you're wearing at least a helmet....:)
Good luck with the lessons, that sounds fun. Remember everyone learns at their own pace. Having fun is the best part.
I got rained out here in Seattle...I'll have to hit my buddy's ramp if it rains for the next two weeks (as predicted)
Anyone else get out and skate this weekend? How about the Cali girls? :)

Hey Greta! How's it going? The weather could be warmer here but it's not unbearable for skating outdoors. My new board arrived yesterday, whoohooo! Went by the skatepark earlier today but it was closed, opens officially tomorrow. So I found a hidden cul-de-sac with a slight downhill grade in a new development near my house, nothing's even built there yet, and just skated there a little bit to get a feel for the board and all that. Was a little unsteady at first but after a few runs things started to smooth out. I even got comfortable enough to stoop down and scoop up little pebbles without stopping hehehe! Even though it wasn't anything requiring skill, it still felt awesome to go down that incline, getting faster every time... Tomorrow I go to another skatepark for some lessons and ramp practice. Can't wait, of course. Hope everyone has a great weekend of skating or at least thinking aboug it! =-)

Hey Beth, dropped you an email yesterday....
Even though it hurts like hell when I fall, I find I'm in better health and spirits since taking up skating again. Even though I have met great people and skated some neat parks, I still see myself as a soul skater and love to find a sloped parking lot to carve some early Saturday AM when it's quiet. Very therapeutic. Whoopsie, gotta go work now! Take care all.

Beth, Skateboarding hurt too much, so I took up Snowboarding and Surfing, and pretty much did just that for about 6 years. Then one day, just for fun, I went down to the Mission Valley YMCA and found that I could barely skate anymore. Well, it didn't matter, cause everyone at the park were so cool, I started showing up every day. It was closer than the snow (bear mt. is 2 1/2 hrs) and it was better than a choppy day of waves. It's always double overhead and glassy at the vert ramp. I found that skateboarding sucks you in. You become addicted. It's my drug. Now that I am racing, it's like snowboarding, but I don't have to get all dressed up and buy a lift ticket.

Hi Greta! Thanks for the reply, sorry to hear you were not well for the trip though! But hopefully the beach was a pleasant place to spend some time. Did you check out any cute surfers? ;-) Yes, definitely bringing a board with me to CA even though I'll be flying out. That's gonna look adorable, a 36-year-old woman walking on a plane with a '77 Alva reissue and a helmet under her arm! So you were a returner to skating too...four years and you're still into it, that's encouraging to hear. My email is with this post, please feel free to drop a line if you want to talk about your experiences more...or reply here, either is cool. In fact I'd be interested to hear about anyone's experiences with getting back into skateboarding, esp. if you were away from it for a longer time. I have yet to meet other females in my part of the state who are getting back into it and am still figuring out where to start. If only there were some great banks to skate nearby...but this part of the state is not only flat, builders seem to have a serious aversion to concrete! At least there's a skatepark in the next town with some smaller ramps, and another skatepark in Raleigh that's indoors and offers beginner lessons. So anyone who wants to share stories and progress reports, please do so! Beth in NC

Hey Beth-
Welcome back to skating! I was a basic sidewalk surfer in the 70's and just got back into it 4 years ago. It's like learning from scratch, and I'm a slow learner, but I'm having a blast. Have fun and keep us posted on your adventures. :)
Unfortunately, on my trip I was sick as a dog with the coughing/gnarly cold and all I could do was sit on the beach. It was such a shame since I had both my boards, park and long board. :( So no skating. I hope your trip turns out much much better. It's relatively flat there and most of the pavement is so smooth, I bet just sidewalk surfing would rule. You could also cruise the Venice boardwalk-fun!
