Surrender/Superman slide

The only Brazilian I've seen doing a "Superman" skide is Sergio Yuppie. He does it on the "Flow" video into a toeside 180 or maybe into a toeside pendulum. The boys from Faltown and also some from the Lush crew in the UK start the "Surrender" slide straight out in front of their boards and then do a variety of slides from there, both toeside and heelside.
It is not necessary to lift a hand to do a 360 slide. It can be done either way, by lifting a hand or by leaving both down for the entire rotation.

I need a location, a back-up location, students with gloves and that's about it to hold a clinic. If you would like to help organize a clinic in the Sf area, I usually set a limit of 30 students. Since SF is close to my home in Oakland, I wouldn't need to set a minimum number for students in a class. E-mail me at the above link if you think we could drum up the interest for a clinic.

Congrats on the forum, its about time I say. I have a couple of questions here for you one pertaining to if there are any clinics going to be held in the San Fransico area any time soon. The other regarding the surrender slide or the superman slide...which ever you want to call it. I have done that slide before but it was out of a two handed toeside slide. I was rotating that into a 360 (unlike the normal toeside 360 where you would have to move your uphill hand to spin) and started going down head first like the superman slide. I was just wondering if that is how the brazilians or the faltown guys are doing theirs or if they just go into a downhill head first slide. just wondering.

Great to see you've got your own forum now, congrats!
As you know, after many suggestions to me about wearing slide gloves, without complying, my number came up at La Costa. I'm certain my injury wouldn't have been as bad if I had been wearing sliders! Still going to PT to get the flexability back.
I've got some of those Timeship gloves on Santa's list! Hope he's coming from the New Mexico direction, and Joe can fill all the requests!!
Hope to see you at a clinic the first of next year, Jonny's possibly.

To see the style/type of gloves I use, go to : "timeshipracing.com". Check out the motorcycle glove with carbon fiber protection for the knuckles and "UHMW" pucks on the palm and fingers. I'm sponsored by Timeship and think their glove is about the best I've seen on the market.
If you would like me to run a clinic in your country with you, it is not hard to set up at all. You would have to set up a "Pay Pal" account. When you have enough students to pay for the round-trip air fare, we then confirm the clinic. If we fall short of the required number of students to get me there, we can then refund the class fees to those who had already signed up. I haven't had to do this yet. The classes have been at capacity levels so far. E-mail me for more information if you think you would like to proceed along those lines.

After reading hc's post about your question, all I can say is that I agree with his advice. Start learning to slide before racing downhill! He was also right that a shorter deck and harder wheels than what you are riding will make the learning a little easier. You can later experiment with different set-ups.

My choice for favorite sliding wheels changes from one style of riding to another. I like Soft wheels, about 80 to 85 durometer for racing and sliding corners. For trick slides, I like a wheel about 95 durometer. At that hardness, the wheel still has enough grip when needed, but will allow many variations of slides including 360s etc.
Regarding sites, articles or other information about slides beyond the basics, I recommend downloading videos of the Brazilians or the Faltown crew from Cornwall in England. You should be able to find videos by using the search function on this site. Then study the videos and try to improve your technique.

rodrigo, a short board with hard wheels is the way to go for quick learning.
I don't recommend bombing without knowing how to slide. Learn to carve first.

matt, for freestyle sliding, videos are your best bet. Get the Flow video if you haven't already. Go through a slide frame by frame.
Adam, that pic reminded me of the early days when I was reading NCDSA. I remember Cliff arguing with the 'tail drag' guy and challenging him to a race? :-)

Congratulations for your own forum!
I'm speedboarding from 6 months now and improoving at every drop. The stopping technic that I'm using is primarily air-bracking, and foot-break coming as the second option, but just to lower speeds because I'm not have yet all the confort to do a foot break in higher speeds.
Well, the slide is one stop technic that I want to learn as quickly as possible, to improve safety. I know the basics to how do the slide but the few times that I tried it did not worked properly. I use 76mm red kryptonics because it's a awesome wheel that stick/grip on the ground and makes me very confident to use it at the high speeds that speedboarding is all about. I now it's far from the best wheel to learn to slide, but it's the wheel that I use for speedboarding, so that's life...
The questions are:
* It's the correct path to learn to slide with the red kryptonics or the better is to get another wheel to learn the basics and just after that try the red kryptos?
* I know that practice makes the perfection, but what can I do to speed up learning to slide?
Right now I just try and fall down, either butt-asphalting or jumping in front of the board. I think I miss the correct balance of the body to perform the slide.
And I'm using sliding gloves, of course :-)

Hey Cliff nice to see you got your own forum. When we hooked up earlier this year I was impressed with how Safety consious you were. After our brief slide lesson my skating and confidence has gone ahead in leaps and bounds. WE just had our first downhill comp over here and safety was the overiding factor in the race. No major injuries but a few stacks. (our medical team were 2 hot chicks so I think guys were fallin on purpose) I just wanna say congrats anyway Cliff, I know this will help get your message to more people. Next time you head over here we'll put on a "proper" slide clinic the Old Skool Team way. Take care mate

I feel like I'm late to class. Sorry but I've been out skateboarding.
A few of you I have yet to meet, like you Herbn, we haven't crossed paths yet but I enjoy reading your posts. Hope to hear your thoughts on how to promote this style of riding, (sliding), and to try and get as many skaters as possible to use slider gloves. I hope this forum becomes a gathering place for those who like myself want to further the use of slider gloves and to learn or teach the skills necessary to use them. All ideas are welcomed!
About my computer, it's old and may go down at any time. I did recently get it tuned up and I'm trying to fix the last few bugs now.
What's happening with sliding at the moment?
Earlier this year I traveled twice to the UK to run sliding clinics. Both were great fun and very successful. The first was put together with the help of some great guys at Lush Longboards in the North of England. Imagine skateboarding where Robin Hood actually lived in the 13th century. Later in the year, I traveled back to the UK a second time. I worked with Michael Stride who has been very helpful in assisting me with the promotion of sliding in the UK. Thanks Michael! I also made a connection with Pete Connely of Essence Clothing. He is a great slider and put me up for a week in St Albans, UK. After a week with Pete, I traveled to the south of England, to Cornwall. Jonny X put me up while I was there and was my driver and a great friend. He helped put the clinic together. I also worked with the amazing skaters of the Faltown crew. These guys have it together! We ran a clinic for 30 students. The youngest was 9 years old and a ripper, Ollie Binns! The oldest was almost my age at 52. We had students of both sexes. "Max Gen", was there to tape a segment for the Extreme Sports Channel. Now another Network, ITV, is interested in doing a piece on the Faltown boys. They not only skate great, but they have it together with their videos and product line. They also have the "BBC" interested in posting their videos about sliding and the safety aspects of sliding on the "BBC" web-site.
Information for all of you female skaters, you are WELCOMED to the slide scene! I am even going to attempt to teach a fellow, 69 years of age to slide! I saw a photo of him riding and I'm pretty sure he can handle it. He looks pretty fit and agile. Everyone should learn these techniques.
I'm organizing a clinic early next year, 2005, in the San Luis area with Johnny Miller. I also want to return to the UK for more of the same as last year. I am going to run a clinic if the scheduling works out with Joe Lehm in Albuquerque, NM also sometime around March or maybe April. It hasn't been finalized yet.
I hope to go to Brazil sometime next year. I'm going to be looking for sponsors who want to market their products at a "Cliff Coleman" Slopestyle contest to be held in Brazil. This is a developing plan at the moment, I will work on it more as the year aproaches.
For the future, I will consult with any in the Medical field who may be interested in what we are doing. The safety aspect of sliding is the number one important factor in all of this.
I am also here to help in skateboard related injury cases and skate related legal matters. I have worked in this capacity before.
If you readers might have a question about gloves or techniques, please ask! Regarding the question about 360 slide technique, on either a Toe-side or Heel-side 360, for a two hand version, drop the hands, initiate a 180, but keep your feet pushing the slide past the 180 point! This will cause your hands to slide around and also the deck to complete the 360. You should really download the Faltown videos and other videos from the Brazilians who have so many expert sliders.
Lastly, for those of you who have yet to learn sliding, I want you to write about your thoughts after learning the technique. Stacy Peralta told me after he learned, "It's the most fun I ever had on a skateboard".
