Street Review
jackson st los gatos ca
On 5/19/1997 mike pelzel wrote in from ()

Steep fun ride that is kind of long. This can be entered from University ave across the street from los gatos high school. The street is short of a loop the mid point being the top. To one side is a steeper run that is great for some kick ass steep riders. To the other side is a novice side perfect for sharp s turns and manuals. If you don's have a skate you can get one at no control board shop. A if you wet your droors because you are not used to steep shit there is a 7 11 at the botom of the hill. It kicks ass.

A 1/2 mile super wide culdesac with little to no traffic at night and very well lit. Medium grade. Its a two lane road but wide enough for six. If its late at night, you can actually continue past Painter and ride for another 2 miles all the way to Whittier blvd. 7-11 at the bottom, grab some beef jerky and a slushy and you are set.

Schwitzer Mountain Sandpoint , Idaho

This is an amazing 9+ mile road that leads to a ski resort it obviously sucks in the winter, but in the summer months the traffic is almost zilch. One of the nicest aspects about this stretch of road, is that it was completly repaved two years ago. Talk about smooth ! It is near impossible to cruise top to bottom due to a couple of stretches that you could easily push 50 m.p.h. but alot of the sections are excellent, including some switchback turns, which are great to bomb into, tuck the turn, then fly out into a nice mellow straight.

Official name n/a (The Comet) Portland, Ore
On 5/14/1997 Sam Beebe wrote in from ()

The other Portland roads mentioned are great, ten years
ago. Traffic and road quality has since changed. All
respect to P-town legends, but the territory is different
now. The familiar drop of Vista Rd. in the west hills was
paved in the end of '96. It's now a buttery careen into
the double hairpins at the bottom. Mt. Tabor park is a
good spiral round the hill (some drops, dog legs, and
cruises) with off-road potential -dirtboarding- every
which way. From the bottom it's a sooper mellow glide
through the east side to the Burnside Bridge.
Remember Thompson road? It's all chewed up, but has new,
development-built decendants. One is the Comet. It is a
stealthy road disappearing westward, near the top of Thompson
It is the most perfect chute/shoot I've encountered. Sooper
smooth, two lane, hecktically steep, soft visisble curves,
grass strips on both sides (watch out for the sprinklers),
and a perfect run out (very brief uphill) quickly leading
into another smaller drop. The Comet is only half a mile
long, but it's as fast as you want. There are trillions of
new developments eating the entire east-facing hills. Get
out there! Please be respectful of people and authorities,
though. We don't need anti-skateboard sentiments too soon.

Centennial Road (Berkeley, CA)
On 5/10/1997 CliffSlider wrote in from ()

Centennial road is one and one quarter miles long. It is very
steep! Cliffsliding techniques are necessary to negotiate this hill.
As you drop in the first drop will take a standing skater to
approximately forty miles per hour. Then you will encounter a ninety
degree left turn. After exiting this turn you then descend a long stretch
where your speed quickly reaches about forty-five to forty-eight miles per hour.
When you exit this straightway you enter a sharp approximately one hundred and twenty degree
right turn. The road drops slightly leading into this turn.
for the rest of the way it has three more turns at about forty to fifty mph depending if your in a tuck or not.
LOCATION, Start at the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley, CA. Skate
south and DOWN Centennial road to UC Berkeley's Memorial stadium. Please don't try this run without
your Cliffslider gloves, you will need them to slow your speed. Skate safe!!

Route 116
On 5/9/1997 Peter Einhorn wrote in from ()

This route in Amherst, MA runs right by Amherst College. It
is about 2-3 miles long and runs real steep in some parts. In
other parts it is less steep. The road is in good condition
and traffic is not a problem because the road is soooo wide.
Come tear it up and I will show you more places. Peace!

inner sunset to ocean beach, san francisco
On 5/7/1997 java snowboards / longboard skates wrote in from ()

in the sunset district of sf, hike up from ocean beach to about anywhere in the twenties. take anything from lincoln over to sloat.lincoln is busy, but anything all the way from irving to uloa (it's in alphabetical order) and sloat should work. each street has its own terrain from freshly paved and grippy to rough and loose. there are also many variations of steepness as you bomb the twenty plus blocks with very few stops. i won't describe every single street , but noriega and kirkham are my faves. the sunset typically has only little traffic, but bomb after 10 pm and under some good moonlight for ideal conditions. also, strong onshores help you take the steepy steeps with a little more confidence. the sidewalks can be fun too as some have some mini quarter pipe type drop ins. i can't believe my friends are the only ones (that seem) to bomb the sunset. i have never seen any one else out, but i hope to see some fellow longbees hiking with me.

Fort Mason, San Francisco
On 5/2/1997 Monkey Milk wrote in from ()

City-bound cruisers should check out the smooth pavement and incredible views
in San Francisco's Fort Mason Park, on the Bay down in the Marina District.
There's a wide-open, smooth cruising surface/sidewalk (not one crack, quake fissure,
separation, or buckle to be found!) that loops through a scenic
parkscape. The pavement's so sweet you'll be rolling up nearly silent on every dog,
jogger, and elderly couple, so be sure to make a little noise so they know you're comin'!

Really long, tight curve after curve after curve, hairpin turns every so often. It's definitely for advanced or maybe just experts. Lots of bad wipeouts, broken bones. If you make it to the bottom, you'll be going as fast humanly possible with enough adrenaline to kill a normal man

Scenic Ave., Piemont Ca.
On 3/31/1997 Brian White wrote in from ()

The best place to start is the reservoir at the top of the
street. This is a intermediate run that gets tighter as you
progress down to the bottom. There are a couple of good,
fast speed runs that have really good runouts. If you look
close enough, you will find many a driveway to slash.
This is a really fun run but is pretty weak compared to the
other spots in Piedmont. I can't devuldge any other spots,
but with a car and a few friends it might be worth checking
out.

Pretty much any golf cource is a damn good place for downhilling.
The fairways are mowed short, so there's no need for off-road wheels. Mine are
Powell 68mm. In I do fine. Make sure there are no security guards there. And check when the full moons are

cottonwood pass colorado
On 3/18/1997 Andrew Love wrote in from ()

Tradionally I'm a downhiller from Porland Oregon and the above
mentioned streets are insane. Cottonwood pass is about
a 13 mile road that wind throught the Colligate mountains
some 14 thousand feet. The seen is breath taking, the ride
is insane. Winding and extremely smooth. Not a car in sight.
And when you think you got all in controll cruising a cool 30mph
your awaken by a 13% downgrade sign that points straight down
1 mile with the perfect run out. No time to hesitate the only
thing that would be appropriate at this time would be a praire
and a tight tucking stance. My first ride on this epic hill was
a T shirt, shorts, Jack Percells, a fiberflex, indi 215 and a brand
new pair of kripto's 70's. Peeking out at 52mph it was the
ride of a life time. I'm going back this summer with full leather
and helmet to break 60. Come Join me 7/14/97 12 noon.

Refugio Valley (Hercules, CA)
On 3/15/1997 Adam wrote in from ()

The residential area off Refugio Valley Rd in Hercules is host to many excellent runs. All the streets are wide, twisty and have a nice smooth surface.

Sparrow at Tanager:
This 7/10th mile run is my favorite. It starts mellow, then gets steeper in the middle, only to mellow out again towards the bottom (stop sign). You can hit 35 on this one without much trouble. Watch for traffic.

Coronado:
Easier than Sparrow with much less traffic, Coronado starts at a culdesac, goes thru a steep section and then mellows out for the rest of its 4/10th mile run.

Falcon:
Start at the hilltop at 400 Falcon. Runs go either way, though the run towards Refugio Valley Rd is best. Probably 3/10th mile.

Patton Rd. Portland, OR
On 3/7/1997 Peter Brownell wrote in from ()

The highest point on Patton road is at the Shell Station. Skaters have gone down past Stroheckers for years, but the really ballsy skaters know that the true action is towards Raleigh Hills. Beautiful, swerving curves where you're able to hit the mid 40's. There are cliffs on the left and large trees on the right. The street is steep, and magnificent. If you're really a down hill boarder this is a MUST!

Steep, steep, steep! This winding road begins up in the west hills and screams into downtown. Lanes are narrow and speeds average in the mid-thirties with a short run out at the bottom. If you make it down in one piece it'll very likely be the ride of your day, month, year...

Montjuic, Barcelona
On 2/17/1997 Paul wrote in from ()

If you are ever going to Spain, bring your board and go to Barcelona. Behind the Olympic stadium you will find the very best in asphalt on a hill called Montjuic. The downhill contains a big part of a former formula 1 racing circuit! It has some killer racing bowl-curves in it. The bottom part is rippable for medium skaters but to ride the entire downhill will take an expert.
The hill is situated on the coast and there is a killer view of the sea. There is a military museum on top of the hill (this will help you find it).

Slick Rock (moab,UT)
On 1/20/1997 mike b. wrote in from ()

World famous mountain biking trail is great terrain for longboards. I rode it with my Bones 3's and it was super smooth, no need for monster truck tires. There are tons of natural bowls to cruise in and out of, plus small cliffs to drop and rocks to ollie. Definately wear pads cause the terrain is unpredictable. oh yeah, dont step in the kryptobiotic soil.

a high speed site no matter how you slice it. However,
there are plenty of options for all riding ability.

The Hills, Bedminster,N.J
On 1/2/1997 wrote in from ()

We have found the best place to start is to take the first entrance inito "The Hills" off of Washington Valley Road(traveling from Martinsville, into Bedminster).Take the first(only)left after taking that right off Wash.Valley Rd.. Then take the first right. Park on the right side as far up as you can.(it is a good idea, if possible to park as many cars in the Kings parking los as to allow yourself rides back to the top). After parking skate back down, take a rt, then rt agian, then follow the flow of the hill There are many ways to the bottom. We haven't been able to come up with one that doesn't require crossing grass atleast once. The runs are great with potential for bush ollies and driveway terror runs.Have fun!!
