The UK now has a manufacturer of high tech slalom race decks to rival the best Continental and US product:
Geckodecks
The Street deck has been designed and developed in conjunction with Michael Stride at Octane Sport. Incorporating both gentle concave and power kick, this deck is one of the lightest in its class.
See them in action at Wasteland 2.

Michael Stride is typically there with his magic truck of goodies, and all of the skaters are happy to lend you a board for a run or two. In that way you can also 'try before you buy.'

dave, check out www.octanesport.com and email mike stride (sales@octanesport.com) who will give you loads of good advice and sort you out.
you'll probably find tracker rtx up front and tracker rts on rear will offer best performance/value. for wheels the new abec11 zigzags (think they are called that) seem to be really well rated.
p.s. at 41 don't be worried about ramps, just pad up and pop some glucosamine. its all skating!

Hi - am an ageing 41 year old ex skateboarder itching to get back into the saddle. The ramps etc are too much like hard work for me these days so was thinking of trying the ol' slalom for a grin!
Could someone please tell me what are the best trucks and wheels to get as I have a board which I bought from ebay but would really appreciate help! Last time I was properly on a skateboard some 20 years ago + was on my Benjyboard, trucker trucks and my red kryptonics!! cheers Dave

Hut lowdown: bring your Thermos and dry teabag.
"...there are toilets at the front of the building. There are changing rooms, but no showers. There is plenty of off road parking between the changing rooms/toilets and track itself. There are kitchen facilites, tea urn, microwave, with mugs in cupboards under the counters. You will have access to them all, but please clean up the kitchen and main room after you."
And if all plans go awry, then we hit Hyde Park and go pedalo racing. Yes, I know. The shot below is a dinghy.

Mick is generously doing an up to date version of a website for UK Slalom. This understandably does take time, effort and commitment. Mick has done exceptionally well so far.
Without races we cant expect people to join ANY organisation. It is Chicken and Egg. The races are coming along, and more will come.
I think, by nature, the Brits dont want to be 'too' organised. Late entrys, cheap race fees are all what we look for. It will take a few commitments to enable us to acces the cheaper insurance offered by the UKGSA. I dont think ranking is high on the priority list for UK racers, if a race can get ranking then that would be a bonus, but honsetly what can we expect if we havent got any races in place yet. For Brands to achieve ranking we need a date AND confirmed insurance. The UKGSA linkup will enable us to always have an idea of costs well in advance.
We cant have situations like last year where we are hunting for insurance at the last minute and expect Euros to book flights. Look at whos going to Brixlegg, if we didnt know when it was we couldnt go eh?
Looks like our first race will be at Uxbridge. I spoke to a Rom local today who wants to do a slalom comp as part of a great day out at Rom.
To race you can either be a full member or day member, but as I said, it has to start somewhere. realistically we are building foundations for 2007.

No one was doing it so it was obviously out of date, with no one running the organisation it would be difficult to contact anyone.
With no events planned for 2006 with any ranking it will be difficult to get people to join. What is the contingency plan, who is under-righting the cost. I will join when I have paid off the UKSSA debt.
If you want to make it better YOU need to do something to make it happen. Hope is not the way forward, what are the plans. The UKSSA/GSA is what you want it to be.

fingers crossed there is a chance that bude will run 9am - 1pm this year.
if that comes off my proposal would be to have an open course for one hour, that way anyone can have a go and hopefully some people will step fwrd to be on hand to give tips/advice etc. we set up some cones at MH on friday night and within seconds we have every kid in the park fully stoked trying to wiggle. it would be great to do that at bude, either 9-10 or possibly better 12-1 after racing so more people will be there.
racing would start with a 2hr jam session. with 1hr to go the field gets cut so the fastest guys take 45mins. for the final 15mins the top 4 only race for the podium.
bude is approx 3.30 - 4hrs from london, it is do-able in a day easily(i do penzance/london/penzance in a day regularly).
there is also a chance of another cornwall race mid/late june, a good town centre location in penzance so huge hi-profile and the organisors would be super keen to get a workshop out of it. if there is the interest for that as a ukssa race i can go see people BUT i will have to move fast so pls let me know if thats of interest. we could probably sort a lift to/from the airport at newquay for that if a bunch of people came on the same flight.
beyond that, anyone in the sw who wants to wiggle get in touch.

In order to run Brands you need insurance. I have tried to source a good use of resources to get this in place before there are time issues like last year.
Sam Gordon will be/has? given sight of the UKGSA insurance, and ideally he needs to liase with Clingfilm or Nutsack as to whether this provides suffient cover to satisfy Brands.
We have been offered the EXCESS slots that the UKGSA have available. These are time limited to May 2006 I think.....If we can get broad agreement then there has already been mooted one race before May. And I would try to organise one too.
I want slalom to move forward. Last year we had too few races. No one could get Eastbourne sorted. We can do one in Brighton, I have another up my sleeve and we have already got two possible Middle Age Shred races this year, one at Romford, one up North. These are to introduce people to slalom and the members of UKSSA will hopefully mentor a racer for the duration of the race.
There is the possibility of a great race on the Isle of Wight at the White Air Festival.
There is a possibly race at Donnington.
I also hope to see a 100 cone challenge at Gurston at some point.
The UKGSA wont take anything from us....they can only assist. The whole point is to SHARE resources. We can help them use their insurance.
On another level it has at times been hard to contact the UKSSA and I have heard a few comments about the website being out of date. Mick has kindly done a more up to date site, and hopefully races will be added.
The last thing I need to say is that without races we cant expect people to join ANY organisation. Some of us are trying to break the chicken and egg situation and get things moving. Insurance would mean we can offer ANYONE of us the incentive to plan a race. Gavin did a great job at Bude last year, and I hope others will 'Build it and they will come'. The MAS slalom events would be a great example of an idea being used, and gaining its own momentum. I'd like to see those events having a small fee attatched so those that enter in effect subsidise the UKSSA.
I hope we can resolve all the issues.
