By the way, I can only brag as being the fastest Washington DC skater for just a fleeting moment. Curt Kimbel came out of retirement and kicked my @#$. Ohm got fast as all get out and Vlad killed us all. Parsons then made me eat every win I had over him. And WesE & crew started to practice so much and got so fast that they knocked me right down into the "B" bracket. I think the only way I can win any races now is to try to out gut my opponent but that ends up with me either blowing off course, going down, or just emptying my tank of gas real early. Case in point, the last WV race. Them Detroit boys did me in at the WV race.

The Gathering 05- First Day

Gathering Day 1:
First off, this was the tastiest Gathering of all. Jeff Boswell cooked up one hell of BBQ feast. You could tell that times were going to be a tenth faster because of all the food consumed. Thanks Jeff! And by the way, Ohm has the rest of your cones. Don't worry, we got Brian back for pulling your chain. As I said the food was great.
Probably as you all know, I didn't run any cones. I'm so out of practice, I would break my neck if I ran cones. Anyway, I enjoyed setting the "longboard" course and running the race.
Before I set up my course and before we gorged ourselves with Jeff's cuisine, GBJ had set some practice courses. The newbies proceeded to get their wiggles figured out while the other side of the hill had a tough course set by GeezerX.
After the lunch, GBJ set a tighter slalom course that I never got to see. Though, it was the center of attention for awhile. While the tight slalomers did their stuff, I set a wide open GS Longboard course with PSR correcting any of my mistakes. The timer bugs were figured out and then a jam format got underway.
Allen Chaney riding some vintage equipment jumped out in the lead and held it for a good stint. Then WesE showed up as well as PSR and Brian Parsons. They all started to take over the race with fast runs. In fact in his first run, Brian stole first place and thought he had it in the bag. BP whipped out his cell and called someone, maybe Ohm, to update the days activities and brag a bit about his first place run. Then the unthinkable happened. John aka "Rad" Dillion blew everyones doors right off.
Johnny boy brought a true longboard to a longboard course and proceeded to power it down the line. Parsons looked faster but Dillon put tenths between him and Parsons. BP was shell shocked as John just got faster with each run. When the dust settled, Dillon had beat everyone else by about a second and BP by more than a half second.
The real GS race turned out to be the two women's racers. Ilva showed up to display her graceful birdlike style that would look so cool in a video to the right music. Ilva got it going and started to post some respectable times for even the guys to be worried about. The other female skater was VaBeach surf instructor Jennifer. This girl has a powerful push start and pumping style. Jennifer surfed the cones to everyones delight but she was well behind Ilva. Then the unthinkable happened.
I gave Jennifer some advice that GBJ gave me about looking forward to not the cone your are about to turn around but the one after that. Just as that advice at the time made me instantly the fastest Washington DC slalomer more than a few years ago, the same advice gave Jennifer the confidence to go for it. [Note, there is a bit more to just looking ahead to the next cone, it also has to do with catching the cone & body positioning, etc....]
And did Jennifer go for it. She started to chip away at Ilva's times and then matched it exactly. The last run for the day was announced and Ilva stepped up to the plate. She got a good start and carried speed through the top section looking better than Gilmour could ever look. But she must have hit some wind on the bottom section and her time was not bettered. Jennifer set up and pushed into the course hard. She didn't look as fast as Ilva but looks were deceiving. Jennifer pumped each turn and in the end had stolen first place from Ilva. What a race day.
Well I hope some of the photos that WesE and others took will be posted soon. Me and my family (wife and both sons) had a blast.

Sunday May 8: Golden Gate Park, Conservatory drive slalom. 8:30am to 12:00 noon.
The forecast is for cloudy Saturday and the "possibility of rain" on Sunday, so there's a good chance we'll be riding in the AM.
Sunday is Mother's Day and I need to leave by Noon. I'll set a 60 cone hybrid for the morning. Beginners welcome!
Parking near Arguello and Fulton. Enter at the Arguello gate and 100 feet up the hill you're there. Bring coffee, food, water and your safety gear.

UCSD's Earl Warren College Student Activity Center presents "Longboard Building 101: build your own 40" pintail longboard".

INFORMATION
-----------------
Participants will be provided all the tools, equipment, materials and guidance to each build their own 40" pintail skateboard deck, using the "Roarockit" vacuum lamination system to construct a 7-ply, maple board with your own custom graphics. Any student, regardless of past experience with woodworking or skateboarding, is ready for this class if you have a fun attitude. You do not have to be a "Warren student" to participate in this class, but you do have to be registered at UCSD.
Students will be given instruction and guidance in order to laminate, shape, sand and finish custom longboards, working in pairs. Each participant will make their own board, design their own graphics and be able to finish the class with a completed custom deck, ready for trucks and wheels. The process is easy, and by the time we are done, you will feel like an expert, even if you've never done a "craft project" before in your life!
Our class will be split into two Sections, each meeting formally 3 times. The first day of class is different for Section I and II, and days 2 & 3 will be with the sections combined. Both Sections will receive passes to attend a Preview Screening of Columbia Pictures' "Lords of Dogtown" movie, to be screened on May 17th. Each section is limited to 12 students, so register for the Section that best fits your schedule.
Cost: $50.00, payable at Registration.
Register: at Warren Student Activity Center or Warren Res Life Office.
Registration Deadline: May 1, 2005
Included: wood, glue, wood stain, instruction and use of equipment.
Not Included: griptape, trucks, wheels, etc...

The 5th Gathering: It's All About Slalom

When I first announced The 5th Gathering: It's All About Slalom, I proposed that this year would see an increase in organization and scheduling, since that time, I haven't had any time to do any scheduling. I know I said I would, but I simply have not had any time. I know I am planning to focus on juniors and rookies on Saturday morning. The rest of Saturday will be a steady progression of courses throughout the afternoon and early evening.
The beginning of Saturday, focusing on juniors and rookies, will not be scripted, until we see what we are dealing with. I will guarantee at least one, Juniors Only (14 and under) race and perhaps more depending on who is there and how broad is the range of abilities.
I know I'll start the afternoon with a single lane, "cruises easy, races hard", slalom course on the Main Hill, and a fast, easy longboard course on the Back Hill. I see no reason to not have a vintage race each day, so Saturday's vintage race may happen next and could be raced on the first course set on the Main Hill.
By then I'm going to want to challenge the more advanced riders with a hard, steep, fast set-up on the Back Hill, while I set a dual, moderately fast, moderately tight, relatively straight set of courses on the Main Hill. Once the dual courses are up... It's challenge time! Head-to-head challenges and fun, we can even attempt to mess with some kind of handicapping to work on racing less experienced racers against the more experienced racers. That'll probably fill Saturday.
Sunday could continue on in the same manner, without the morning junior session. I want to start with a full, qualify and bracket, dual race on the Main hill.
By this point, I think we're going to need a little break for something different. This year, I'm doing away with any organized hillclimb, and I'm hoping to replace it with a catamaran slalom course on the Back Hill. Several times in the previous few years, people started messing around with catamaraning at The Gathering, and every time it has seemed to be great fun and amusement for everyone. Racing is racing, and the team nature of catamaraning adds some new, entertaining aspects to what is otherwise an individual's sport.
Challenge the best with a very difficult TS course on the Main Hill (or another vintage race), followed by either a GS or another longboard race on the Back Hill, followed by one more regular slalom course (formerly known as "hybrid") on the Main Hill and that'll probably do it.
How's that? Looks like a plan to me, but considering I only just threw it together, I am open to commentary. If the numbers stay as low as registration on the Ncdsa.com Registration Page would indicate, we're going to have a blast. It'll be about the size of the first one and we can just go, go, go.
No matter what we finally decide, I'd appreciate it if people would, as much as possible, keep themselves in and their attention on whatever the current "official" (...wish I didn't have to use that word!) event is. In the past, progression through the schedule has often been hampered by the fact the everytime myself or another coursesetter goes to the alternate hill to set up the next planned event, some splinter faction has already taken over that hill to do whatever it is they want to be doing at that time and I, or someone else, has to have a whole discussion with the splinter group whining over whether we shouldn't just really let them continue to do what they want to be doing, because, after all, they want to have fun too, and isn't this enough people to just make this the next event? Suddenly, those of us who are trying to run an event in some semblance of a time efficient and orderly fashion are the bad, mean people. Y'know what? I don't need it.
The worst thing that ever happened to The Gatherings was when it was styled or described as the Woodstock of slalom skateboarding. There was a time in my life when the word Woodstock meant peaceful cooperation and fun and I would've (and was briefly) flattered by the description, but I've found out, just like the latter day musical Woodstocks, in today's culture, the word "Woodstock" has now come to represent a selfish, hedonistic, me... me... me...., whaa... whaa... whaaaaa..., free-for-all. Those really suck to run.

We'll be hosting the StyleSessions event at the end of May here in New York City - It'll be a full week of riding hills, pool & park sessions, and an insane art collection consisting of 60 longboards painted by world famous artists, musicians, skaters... including Tony Alva, Peter Beard, Lance Mountain, Stacy Peralta, Robin Williams. Our friends from Sony TriStar will also join the exhibit at the famous Milk Studios where they will promote their "Lords of Dogtown" release. They'll bring along an incredible collection of original Vintage decks, cameras, photos... used in the "Dogtown & Z-Boys" documentary.
There'll be a bunch of kick * parties and activities going on all week with riders and pros coming from all over - definitely worth the trip. Not to mention the StyleSessions Competition, based solely on the riders style. The winning rider gets a seat on the Tokyo - Mount Fuji Session in the fall!

Hey Jeremy, I just checked the forum as the snowboarding season is ending soon, I would totally come toyour skate, but I have one last weekend in Tahoe before I'm done for the season. Totally excited about these events you are having and definitely planning on checking them out in the future. I am mostly a snowboarder who is relatively new to longboarding. Hopefully I'll hook up with you guys in the coming summer months.

We will take the Muni Light Rail “N Judah” up to 25th and traverse over to the slope. We will hit a very mellow hill for everyone to warm up and get lessons if needed, then we will move to a more advanced hill later on.

Bring friends and or anyone who wants to come and have fun.
What to Bring:
Boards: Long boards, Freebords, short decks, carve boards, etc..
Equipment: Cameras, tools, extra parts, etc…
Refrements: B.Y.O.B., money for the café and a few dollars for the bus if we have to use it.
Freeboard’s Comments:
-Freebording is dangerous. Due to the extreme nature of a Freebord, Freebord advises all riders to wear full protective gear. That includes a helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, and knee pads. Get out, ride, and keep it safe!
