Mike Williams At Kona
On 9/19/2007 utahcarver wrote in from United States  (76.27.nnn.nnn)

I was either 16 or 17 when I was skating Kona Skatepark on a weekday morning and I met up with a skater who was wearing yellow leather pants with MIKE stitched onto the back of his waistline. I thought he was an MX'er who'd gotten lost. Anyway, he was skating the big bowl and the monolith wall attached to it.

He introduced himself to me and seemed to be a very affable person. His skating skills were far superior to mine but what I remember is he took the time to say hello and to talk skateboarding for a few minutes. It was the beginning for me of realizing that I was a part of a community.

Many years have passed since that day but, I have always cherished the memory more when I began to realize that I got to spend a few minutes with Mike Williams.

At 48, it's a great simple memory to share.

The last time I saw Piercy
On 9/17/2007 Cliff Coleman wrote in from United States  (67.116.nnn.nnn)

He and Mike Williams came to Berkeley to race in a Banked Slalom race. I still have pictures of Piercy or Williams, I'm not sure which one, board gone, laying on his back, half off of the end of the ramp. It was towards the end of the 70s and I didn't see either of them again.

I think the last time I saw Piercy might have been
at the 1979 Skateboarder Magazine Poll Banquet.

That was a cool gathering of skaters...

My brother Richy and I were nominated that year -
for 'Best Freestyle Skater/Amateur' ( Richy )
and 'Best Pro Freestyle Skater' ( Me )

( you got to remember - I'm 11 years older than Richy )

Great times ...

Pat Chewning -

Peter Camann asked my brothers and I to come to Colorado
and race in the "Another Roadside Attraction" races -
-but my bros. and I were doing way too many Pepsi Skate Demo's
to get away and race in that series.

-Please say Hi to Peter Camann and Randy Smith for me -
-if you see them !

Take care,

The chick was the older sister. Remembering seeing them somewhere when I was a young'un.

It's pretty funny when one of their few songs on the hard disc comes up in the shuffle to see some of the people (parents)looking around like whooah!

Some of the old stuff causes such a variety of fffffffffffunies they are worth keeping alive.

Suspenders vs Sky Hooks
On 7/5/2007 Marc F. wrote in from United States  (152.163.nnn.nnn)

I had a set of Suspenders. Here is the problem I had with the Suspenders. It's been a long time but If I can remember correctly you couldn't push with them because the velcro wrapped around your shoe so if you pushed with your foot it would ruin the velcro. Also when you tried to bail, the velcro wouldn't release very well. My friend had Sky Hooks and these worked much better. You could take your foot out to push and you could bail off anytime.

Cat - New "old" Stuff
On 6/26/2007 Chris Yandall wrote in from United States  (70.167.nnn.nnn)

In light of the skyhooks, I came out with Air Shooms when I ran my skateboard distributorship back in Michigan. I liked them more because a 360 degree lip allowed multiple angles to hook your feet and ... they could be used for handstand posts. YIKES. i remember going downhill on my hands in those crazed daze :)

While I pack up to move, I'll keep an eye out for more historical stuff. looking forward to beachin it again.

skogging tours thru the mission beach area sounds like a nice retirement job.

hugz to all!

Doug & Eric -

SKYHOOKS HAWAII( the trademark name ) were manufactured in Hawaii
under businessman Abe Lee.
They came in Red and Blue colors of plasic/hybrid composition.

My brothers - Richy 'The Brown Bomber',
David 'Cowboy' Carrasco and myself, helped 'pioneer' SKYHOOKS
in the Sport of Skateboarding...ALONG WITH ...
surfing great - Dale Dobson, ripper Lonnie Hiramoto,
those fella's in Hawaii, -dang it,...I can't remember their names ...
also, I think Howard Hood -another ripper
over at the Runway Skatepark, also Benny Rodriguez, and Mike Schwartz.

Besides doing thousands of Skateboard Demo's
promoting SKYHOOKS,
...My brothers and I were PAID Skyhook Team Riders....
from 1977 to 1981.

................... -GREAT TIMES ! ......................

Now, regarding 'SUSPENDERS' - - -( The Velcro Bindings )

You should ask Dave Hackett about those -
I'm sure he has TONS of info & photo's about 'Suspenders'.

He, along with his brother Paul, and other rippers
( I can't remember all the guys...)
promoted those attachments for Skateboarding.

When I wrote my PEPSI PRO TEAM article for the
Skatebord History Book -
THE CONCRETE WAVE -THE HISTORY OF SKATEBOARDING.....
-I even mentioned Dave and his brother using Suspenders
at the Pepsi Team demonstrations.

Oh yes, how could I forget - Wink Roberts was also a
Pepsi Team member who 'ripped' using Suspenders...
and also Glenn Redmann.

I just talked to Wink Roberts the other day...
he's writing and selling Movie screenplays !

Way to go Wink !

Take care,

suspenders and other odd attachements
On 6/15/2007 Eric sanders wrote in from United States  (66.0.nnn.nnn)

Anyone remeber those suspender things? It was like a tie down that would attach to your board, slide your feet under the strap and do "amazing no-handed airs". I want to say that Paul Hackett was featured on them in an old skateboard world? Also some company built a round metal tee that you'd place on the top of the board for handstands? I tried the slide an inntertube under the board deal which caused many hippers to bloom. Anyone have any more wacky gimmicks along these lines?
