To be perfectly clear... The USSSF is established as a national non-profit sporting organization, and has every intention of acheiving 501(c)(3) status. This status allows the organization to receive charitable grants and donations which are deductible for the donor. A 501(c)(3) status will lend a great deal of energy and options for the long-term survival of the organization, which will hopefully continue to dedicatedly advance the causes of the sport of slalom skateboarding.
The United States Slalom Skateboarding Federation WILL NOT be offering any insurance programs and will not be linked, insurance business-wise with any commercial insurance interests.
I don't right the IRS rules. I wasn't there when they wrote them either, so don't try to get me into an argument over whether it's right, wrong or otherwise that we accept this restriction.
As is clearly stated on page 22 of IRS Pub. 557 (Chapter 3, 501(c)(3) Organizations), under Organizations Providing Insurance, it states the following:
"An organization described in section 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) may be exempt from tax only if no substantial part of its activities consist of providing commercial-type insurance."
The key here is the terms "no substantial part". It seems vague and yet completely restrictive. In my personal association management experience, I have found that providing a list of insurance sources in a periodical publication does not cross the line, while endorsing a specific program does. It was even very necessary for staff to be aware of expressing no preference, for personal reasons or otherwise, for one insurance vendor over another.
There should be important news from the USSSF within the next week.

it's the way to go for grass roots slalom racing
racers join for $15
events then cost only $50 to sanction
this is the ultimate way to reduce the expense of insuring an event (even if it's k&k and $200 and some change)
let's say there are 8 races in a series, and 60 racers
$900 worth of racer registration, and $400 worth of event sanction fees for a total of $1300
insuring these events with k&k would run you over $1600

Sure, I have several comments about USA Rollersports:
Hurray! Finally a place to obtain inexpensive event insurance geared specifically for our needs! I'd much rather pay to an organization of fellow skaters than directly to an insurance company.
USARollersports also have an event sanctioning process, a centralized event calendar, and an organizational magazine.
Someday the USSSF might be able to offer this, but in the mean time, I'm certainly going to check this out to obtain site-owner insurance for our upcoming events.
Since both rollerskating and slalom/downhill skateboarding do not have very many participants, maybe our USSSF could "join forces" with USA Rollersports and operate as a "division" or "special interest group" or whatever. This might save time and $$ in getting an official sanctioning body going for slalom skateboarding (plus site insurance, plus magazine coverage for events .... etc).
I find it interesting that you used the words "Muscle in on skateboarding" when describing the actions of USARollersports. How can they "muscle in" on something that nobody else offers?
I can't say that I like their choice of words for everything NOT mainstream rollerskating -- "Extreme Sports" -- YUK!
I fully support and look forward to the USSF getting going. In the mean time, USARollersports appears on the surface to offer exactly what I am looking for: Inexpensive insurance for site owners during skateboarding events. This has been the one key obstacle so far for organizing and running events in our area.

here's the reply I go from them....
"To be sanctioned by USA Roller Sports (USARS) you will need to fill out a sanction form that I can provide you with. A sanction fee of $50 per day on the event. If it is a one day event that would just be $50. The $50 fee will provide you with insurance for your event (with a certificate to show if needed). USARS will also advertise your event on the Xvision (extreme) portion of the USARS website. Lastly, USARS would like to have an article published in USA Roller Sports The Magazine after your event has taken place. You will also receive ability to contact other USA Roller Sports Xvision athletes to participate in your event (if you wish). The participants would all have to purchase USARS full membership card at $15. This would provide them with secondary insurance for which will be available to them until August 31, 2003. They will receive a membership card and an e-zine from USARS."

Apparently USA Rollersports, the self appointed sanctioning organization for quad roller skating, is trying to muscle in on skateboarding.
They do have one very attractive feature - event insurance.

Ok everyone, I need some input. I have been asked to present the local radio media a list of bullets or catch phases pretaining to slalom racing to be used to put together a radio spot for the upcoming Luna Slalom Jam in Jackson, MS on April 12th.
example: The fastest growing skate sport in the country! Skaters of four-wheel skill and nerves of steel.
Also informative lines like: Finely tuned skate equipment akin to Formula One racecars. Racers straight from the FCR national circuit.
Anything is a help, post here or email me. I need this list tomorrow...Aaaahhhh
Thanks guys!

$5 of every entry fee at the Georgia race is going to USSSF
The entry fee is being lowered to those who also race in Mississippi, St. Louis or West Virginia. $25. More races, less money, you gotta love that.

I'd help put together a video. I didn't film any of the recent FCR stuff but maybe FCR would donate some footage. I'd help with editing, dialog recording and any motion graphics work.

Our leader has spoken!! I would like to push for the production of a VHS race promo tape to send to the municipalities when petitioning for a race venue.
Just filling out some paper work and crossing your fingers is all I can do right now.
I will personally FUND the production of this USSSF sanctioned video as I need ammunition to sell the racing venues to the municipalities.
You heard me--FUND the video. Mr. pres. let our admin. director -Mr. Bittner find out what it will take and get back to me at the "e" mail address above.
Jack, I would like to thank you personally for your commitment to the sport.

This post has been too long in the making.
Over a year ago Andy Bittner approached me about accepting the post of President of the USSSF. At the time I was concerned with possible conflicts of interest. Since then I have decided that what is most important is the continued growth of slalom.
I believe that the USSSF can serve as a valuable conduit to this growth. Some of the programs planned include
A group insurance plan that race organizers can use for a nominal fee.
A race package that could be used by local promoters when planning an event. This might include "how to appoach the city council", supplies checklist, dual and single lane guidelines, how to deal with the local media, canned press releases, course ideas and other helpful hints.
A nationwide amatuer points system, racers across the country could compare themselves with each other by age group and skill status.
A sanctioning system that could be used for both pro and open events. It is much easier to convince a city that they should allow and welcome your event if you have a national organiztion behind you.
Andy along with the board of directors have been working hard to develop these programs and I urge you to support the USSSF's efforts in promoting the future of slalom skateboard racing.
Sincerely, Jack Smith President - USSSF

The U.S. Slalom Skateboarding Federation is grateful for and would like to acknowledge a hand-delivered, anonymous Launch Ramp Campaign contribution, paid in Rubles. Shortly after the exchange took place, the courier was hustled away by two well-dressed gentlemen with fur hats. Thanks, comrade. You may get The Order of Lenin for this.

I never really thought of it before, but now that you say it, Slappy, you may be on to something!. . .
Regarding the direction of USSSF, I am very new to the group and am fully stoked on the vibe, forward-thinking, and inclusive planning that's going on. I, too, have had many of the same questions as have been posted here, and hearing the input of the USSSF leadership and RDs - both on and off-line - has only gotten me more excited and made me more sure that this is a good thing for this sport that we all love.
Thanks for now, back to work on the job that pays while I dream of the job that doesn't (well, I've currently won several sets of wheels, bearings, and trucks, so it pays. . .!)
