ive been doing that grind as well, only theres another one,if your not going too fast come right up near the kerb and try to hook your front trucks on to the kerb, this also grinds your trucks nice, and slows you down, but if yore going any faster than 20mph its not recomended as i found out in a painfull way

Grindy slidey thingy.

hey Gabe, I don't know what it is called either, but it is cool. We do the same thing, but just on a curb. You get speed and do a stand-up power slide next to the curb. When your back starts to slide, push it out over the curb so the trucks grind. Then, before you loose all your speed, pop the wheel back up on the sidewalk and away you go! It is pretty cool, and grinds your trucks nicely. Who knows what to call this and in all fairness who really cares?

Some speed positions can be seen on the Pics page. Look for "John Hutson" and "Jarret Dr. GoFast Ewanek". John was not "at speed" for that shot, but Jarret was. Notice his full leathers and special helmet. If you're contemplating breaking a speed record on your own, I recommend you first read "The Legend Speaks" at http://www.charged.com/issue_0/tar/stories/downhill/index.html, and then our Riding Safety forum.

How do you stand on your board when you want to go for very high speed?

Aside from all the bickering, I was messing around behind a store the other day and I found the truck ramp with a 1' x 1' curb next to a fence. So I figure I'll go on it and try to jump it. Well I did that fine but in the meantime I was able to get my back truck to go on the edge of the curb and grind just my back truck while still moving, then get it back on the curb and jump of the curb. Anyone know what this is called? (And before you call me an idiot for not knowing this, I have only been longboarding for 2 weeks so I don't know that much).

How do skyhooks affect non-air techniques? Is it harder to
get into drop knee with the hook hanging onto your back foot?
What about riding switchstance, since the hooks would be at
weird angles? I'm thinking about getting some, but I don't
want to not be able to do regular tricks

FM, you should experiment for yourself, i prefer loose trucks equally tightened, exept for high speed where the back truck is a bit harder than the front, but it may not work for you.

Nico,

It is possible to Coleman slide with 70mm Kryptonics, but it takes more speed (15+ MPH) to break them free, and then they don't slide very far. For learning I recommend some Bones Bombers (68mm 85A). They slide great and are not so hard as to spoil the ride.

Does anybody know if it's possible to bust out a Coleman
slide with Kryptonics (70mm-78a) and if there's an optimum
speed to respect as a beginner ?

Laurence,

I'm a french longboarder from GRENOBLE in the ALPES ,
and i'm president of the "OVER-RIDE Longboard Association".
I've seen your message and if you're living in Grenoble area
you schould come and ride with us ...
We have different projects like organizing competitions, take
part to the S.I.G (+ more)... and just ride together !
I don't know what you are used to do, but we do like downhill
skateboarding, and even if you're not used to montain roads
i think you'll be able within no time to enjoy yourself, try
to make big slides, and take some big U-turns sliding your
tail (if you're not afraid of eating the ground !!)...But you
can also just come, call, or write us to have some informations
about our association . (OVER-RIDE Longboard Association

I HOPE THIS MESSAGE WON'T INFRINGE ON THE NCDSA ...(sorry!!)

PS: Does anybody knows if it's possible to bust out a
Coleman slide with Kryptonics(70mm - 78a) and if there
is an optimum speed to respect as a beginer ???

Power Slides. I've read what you guys have to say but I was wondering if you need hard wheels to do this or if you can do it with soft wheels. I can slike on like cinders and stuff but I haven't been able to do any slides like that. Do you have to lean really hard or something?

I think the worst trick is the one where you're going 35mph and then you eat it when you're not wearing pads or a helmet.

Need advise on longboardings and skateparks. I've been
longboarding for about a year and can do a decent power
slide, but when i go to a skate park, i can't do the turns
on the street course. (i've never had a regular skateboard)
Should i be able to? will it come with time, or should i
get a regular skateboard? My current board is a 38" sector9

POWER SLIDE & COLEMANS
A Coleman slide is a type of power slide. When your back wheels slide and often come round 180 that is a CESS slide. In any power slide (including Coleman) all four wheels are sliding / drifting at the same time. A Coleman slide does not use a grabbing of the deck at all and uses one hand on the ground (hence you need gloves). What people call power slides normally include a grabbing of the deck and not always a hand down. These are gross generalisations of course. Basically a Coleman is a POWER SLIDE !

A powerslide is when just your back wheels slide, its good for scrubing speed but not for stopping at high speed be cause at high speed you generally(well me anyway) slide it around 180 with out scrubing enough speed to stop plus then your riding switch. Coleman slide is when all four wheels are sliding its great for scrubbing speed, stopping......impressing girls. ya know.

I agree with Zac about not having to go fast to Coleman slide. You can pull a perfectly respectible slide at less than 10 mph. The point of attaching plastic to your hands is that it takes some of the weight off your board so that it slides easier, and you don't need to be going all that fast to do it.

Hey Stopping = sliding like Coleman said. I shouldn't prolly be trying to explain how to slide in front of a sliding pioneer like Coleman but Ill try. When I used to shortboard I learned that people always try to find a "magic" tip that will instantly enable them to ollie, there is no tip; same with sliding. You have to actually go out there and push through the first few failed attempts and keep trying. Some other things that people do is keep there butts way in the air grab rail and try to slide. You gotta get that lead hand on the ground behind you and get your butt almost on the ground your shirt tail should be almost on the ground or dragging. I still grab the rai of my board some people say that tends to keep your center of gravity over your board to much but it has always worked for me. Also try and keep your weight over/behind your lead foot. At first it helps to kick your back foot while keeping it unweighted, its hard to explain but eventually if you use than as a crutch it makes it harder to go from powerslide to colemand slide. Finally get some garden gloves. I learned to powerslide and coleman slide with out cutting board on my gloves so you don't nesseccarily need to do any garage tinkering befor you learn to slide. Also loosen your trucks pretty good, I learned to slide at a speed I that I could still easily run it off at so the moral of that story is you dont hae to be going mach 9 to slide. Later

How to slide? It seems that many have problems learning from text. I'm currently traveling with my job. 3-24 I go to Paris for three weeks and then on to Spain for about ten days. I should return at the end of April. At that time I will try to produce a how to video regarding skateboard sliding techniques. I'm sorry for the delays due to travel and will get right on it upon my return.

Sincerely,
Cliff Coleman
