SLides, slides slides
It would be cool if somebody put together some illustrations of these various kind of slides. Power, coleman, ty, frontside, backside, 180, 360, ways to link them. All of this verbage is hard to follow. Some simple graphics - put on the "pics" pages would do wonders for beginning sliders.

I don’t want to give the wrong impression, I haven’t mastered 360 Ty slides on a longboard. But back in the old days on shorter sticks it was my main tool for bleeding off extra speed, and it seems like it should work on longer decks (perhaps I’m just kidding myself). Anyway, I’ve got the powerslides down predictably at speeds up to 20-25 mph, and I’m not sure I want to go too much faster. I’m also learning the Coleman in case I need it to save my butt, although I kinda prefer the power slides at my current speeds. I’ll give the Ty slides some work and see how it goes. Incidentally, I’m using exkate turbo wheels, and they seem to slide real smoothly, easier than 78a Kryptonics and (it seems) more control than 85a Bones Bombers.

Backside powerslide,Ty slide still works for me,I would like to hear about a 360 Ty on a longboard!video clip would be necessary for unquestioning belief, hard wheels are ok for raking up slide variation points but I havn't found them effective at speed control. On a board with a kicktail I've done Colemans into tailslides on curbs,Call that the Herbslide, hehe. Backside 360 slides ,Eggplant back sideColemans switchstance any slide and you have a variation link them up without standing once you've learned them. Boardlengths near shortboard 34,35 are real good for slide trickery along with harder low grip wheels 95a and up ,vert wheels, and the hills are better if they are kind of vert too,but generally speeds are not that high half the time is spent sliding , Personally I havn't skated like that in about a year but the moves are locked in my memory, maybe soon.Sample run, bomb up to speed, use a med lenghth coleman to get wheels hot, counterspin by twisting around to put other hand down in front of you and follow through ,backside 360, if you don't come out perfect back spin frontside comeout fakie ,if things are sketchy quickly kickturn to forwards or bail(you should have slowed with all that sliding and spinning)if things are cool, centered, and you can wait a second and try a switchstance or fakie slide if youve got them pretty good wait longer. Pads highly suggested, slidegloves absolutely, helmet doesn't hurt.

I’m just getting back into skating after a fifteen-year hiatus, I’m riding a long board on hills, and I have a few questions about what various slides are called. I know what a Coleman slide is, but do other any other slides have names? For example, when you’re carving turns the back wheels slide to the outside of the turn, does this have a name? Also, during carving turns you can slide both wheels together. In the old days. when this slide was in a downhill direction, like a Coleman without putting your hand down, we would have called it a “power slide”. Does it have another name now? This same type of slide can also be done sideways across the hill, and of course every angle in between. Does that have a name? One final question, while riding straight down the hill you can do a 180 or 360 slide. This was once called a “Ty slide” after Ty Page (sp?), does it have another name? I apologize for the dumb questions, but I just want to get the terminology straight…

Sorry the graphic got messed up. the W resembling the Hand is supposed to be to the upper right of the board tip. Oh and this is for a backside slide done by a goofy rider. Kili

About the recent descussion on slides. I don't even know if I'm doing my slides quite "right" , for instance I'm still grabing the rails, even though most of the guyes say not to. But anyway here's something that really helped me: Get down low and try to place your sliding hand down on the ground as far IN FRONT of the board as you comfortably can without loosing your balance. Sounds pretty simple but it took me a while to figure it out and it was pretty much when I started doing it that way that it went klick on me and my slides started working. Kind of like this:
W <-Hand !^! !B! !O! !A! !R! !D!
Hope it helps U 2.
Later and get those slides down, they'll save your a.. some day ! Kili

Shag Carpeting? Don't Cha get some serious rug burns?Friends of mine did a longboard covered in AstroDeck snowboard stomp pads(The 3/8"thick,smooth foam stuff),and that was way cushy!More power to the retro-stylists out there!,but I'm too old to deal with Hamburger Feet.

I just posted something along these lines in crashing ,it happened a long long time ago and I tried to save others from similar foolishness/ignorance but I guess the teachings of the old fall on the deaf ears of the young. Doubles crashing routine at 25? even the soviet judges give that a 9.8 out of apossible 10.hehe

if any of you guys know brian, and seen his posts (mainly in homemade boards and crashes) you know about his 6 footer. well we were getting clocked...pushing 25mph (blazingly fast, right? wrong) and we decided to try something new...so we rode on the same board. i was over the back truck and he was over the front. IT DOESN'T WORK!!! the back truck is much too unstable. we could barely go 10 ft.

To put the carpet on your board take a piece of carpet (it looks the best with shaggy carpet) longer and wider than your board and take a razor knife and cut it about an inch bigger around your board and then cut it as close and as good as you can. Then take a hot-glue-gun and smear it all around(especially the edges).Wait 5-10 mins. and you have a CARPET-BOARD!!!!!!
I have green shaggy carpet about an inch long on an ENVY CLASSIC 57.

Try putting a lawnchair on a big, long, wide board and ride! Be careful about DA' WOBBLES! Or pick any longboard you want. I suggest you put carpet on the top of your board like me.(steal some from your dead grandma)

Skullhead,
There are dozens of instructional posts on how to Coleman slide in this forum's Archives section. Read up! Quick tip: don't grab the rail.

skullhead,
the way i learnt to slide was to start of by doing tight turns when crouching down when you have lots of speed. if you have enough speed, you should feel the back wheels begin to slide out. then just do it again but with a bit more speed and a tighter turn and the wheels will slide out more. and just keep practising like that. i'm not saying that is the right way, it's just how i do it.

Could someone explain to me how to do Coleman slides?...I've been to a few other sites and tried to find the info, but I either got broken links or the comp just wasn't fast enough...I've been reading that they're really helpful for stopping quickly...and now that I'm starting to take bigger hills it seems like a good technique to know...I'm riding a sector9 47" with 70mm alien kryptos that I believe are 78a durometer...I know that I have to keep both of my feet to the inside of the trucks, grab the front of the board and lean back...I'm under the impression that this is supposed to be done as you're going into a turn...do you then push with your feet?...what are you supposed to do with your body and shoulders?...any advice that anybody could give me is welcome...by the way...describe the techniques to me like I'm four years old...please don't assume that I know anything...thanks in advance. -peace

Well I finally found a pool to skate, a really sweet huge bowl, I might add with lots of vert. This is all well and good, but I have never skated a pool and I need some pointers. What should I use for wheels? I have traditional GrindKing trucks, on a supercruiser shaped board, but not a supercruiser. I am buying knee and elbow pads, but what about wheels. Any tips on skating a pool? I also have a the small fiberflex pintail, will that work? Please let me know asap. Much appreciated.

I just have a little question... When you are riding tuck, how far apart should your feet be? Also, the fastest way to ride is over/near the front truck right? Any help would be great.

I met this american guy here in Sweden that told me that he has seen people in Fort Lauderdale riding these really long boards (80" or more)and to get them moving the just pump them up and down. Like bouncing on them. Is that a riding technique or is a special board? Just wondering.....

Luke, I would definitly work with the putting the hands on the ground while sliding. With gloves, it is much safer then trying to stay standing if you have to stop on a steep hill or while moving fast. I learned to slide on soft wheels too, it can be done but I found I only got good at it once I started riding something similar to a shortboard with big hard wheels.

Thanks for the tips. I'm probably running too soft a wheel for easy learning, but I'm going to try to stick to them as I'm already doing too much shortboard stuff on this thing. Ultimately, Herb, I'd love to learn all of the slides but right now I'm trying to get a functional power slide--somewhere between making noise and coming to a stop--before I get up to some of those Rocky Mountains. On a shortboard I can do 180 slides both frontside and backside; maybe I'm thinking that the longboard slide is more different than those than it is (my body is totally different). I just want to be able to slide out for a little braking then bring the board back to original position (not do a 180). Coupled with seldom sliding less than 180 (shortboard background)is that I'm new at putting my hand(s) down. Do you guys think I should just try sliding my back wheels out a little bit at speed on a tennis court, etc. and worry about putting hands down later? Any and all of this discussion is way helpful; I'll check in with you guys later as the boss actually wants me to make some money today . . . hang loose
