"Measure twice cut(drill)once." Are you changing the wheelbase? I would try different wedging and bushings first.
I would only worry about redrilling foam core decks.

Hey man you are right, I don't really get the time to build too many skateboards, my job as a professional composites engineer gets in the way
and shapeshifter has a basement full of boards, experiments righteous to the ridiculous over 30 years and more
do a search on vacuum pump, I think you need to use one

You are probably just a little kid. Sorry kid. Learn some basic woodworking and it will become apparent how to get started making boards. Go for it. Sorry I am a mean old man...

Brandon, Do you even know which end of a hammer to use? Do some basic research before blurting out rude questions. You need to know the basics of how ANY board is made obviously. The shape of the board Dogtown or other is the least of your concerns. Take woodworking in shop. Ask someone around you the basics about wood. Go to the frickin' library and read and learn. And bugger off until then.

...you need to ask yerself if you're gonna get a serious answer if you asked a little nicer.
if you want to start from scratch, the real question you should be asing is: "how do you use the search function?" look up press, laminate, glue, maple, etc.
if you really want to learn some advanced techniques and mellow out the steep learning curve check out ted's roarokit site and order his vacuum bagging system. not sure of the variety of decks available there but i wouldn't doubt that some of them could be converted to a banana board if that's what you're looking for.
julien, here's a picture of the hollow core bamboo manta (left) that i've been riding for some months now. to the right is a board that i made almost twenty years ago which was my first attempt at putting a contour on the deck. the mound created by the additional layers in the middle of board created sort of the "w" concave you like so much.
jake, you better believe that this is a cheap shot at... er, for you.

so here's a failed experiment that took a life of its own... bio-composites 101.
btw, not to worry julien, there may be one or two mantas out there that are strictly birch ply but all the rest of them have been made with bamboo. fibers such as bamboo lend themselves so well to composite applications.

Do a search man, theres all sorts of pics on this forum, they're just hidden back a few pages. Some pretty crazy home-mades out there. Not to be a dick or anything but these guys are definitely making some pro quality boards Shapeshifter, have you posted pics of your bamboo board. I've seen shots of the manta (looks sick!) but am curious about this bamboo board you've been talking about I've got an older comet slalom board with a bamboo core and concave-camber combo that has a superb rebound to it. seems like everyone is jumpin onto the bamboo thing these days, the new bamboo S9s are the best thing I've ridden of theirs (I really like the W concave on the Pin). Almost makes me want to forget they're Sector 9s and buy one, hehe

has worked out excellent, i added a layer of 1/4 ply and a bit of carbon cloth to the top of the nose and tail and routed out deep pockets, up to the top ply of the 5/8 multi ply. I sanded the hell out of it and beveled and blended it in , it flexes quite a bit but is very thick in the most torsionally twisted part of the board, and it's lowered enough to make me feel comfortable on tracker 184's (with some relatively easy mods)and 70mm grippins 78a,i'm going to make a batch of boards with thicker ad ons and even deeper pockets.

The pump

The pump was pulling strong.. The bag was the problem. I am redoing the mold (routing out a plywood board with concave, bend the ply end to end to emulate a board shape, then pull) and I think I have the bag straightened out. A long night lies ahead, if you hear kicking and screaming, things didn;t work out.. again.
The one thing I noticed when I pulled the board out today is despite a crappy (emphasis on crappy) layup, the board was surprisingly stiff. Did one layer of 5HS 10oz carbon, Triaxal, 1/4" foam, then triaxal, and the carbon again. THe uppper two layers (one triax, one carbon) bonded well to the core, the lower two were blistered and barely adhered... Interesting I suppose. I am a little worried that when things work out, the boards are going to come out stiff. That said I would rather have a stiff board then none at all..... yan0

Yano,
I completely understand. Just when you think you got things figured out things seem to go wrong. You said your pump won't pull? What kind of pump are you using? Are all your connections air-tight?

but i can almost relate: try spending a year making the same board over and over at least a dozen times none of which resembled the one that came before. creating and recreating the mold or mold sections with equal multiplicity. spend hundreds on materials compounded with the thousands in man hours. go halfway around the world looking for what you had all along; realizing that it was the only other place you would find yourself wondering if those mushrooms were alright to eat. you start out making the deck you originally conceptualized only to find that it performs quite different than expected. so you make adjustments in the form and changes along the way leaving several projects in different stages of might never ever finish. when a rider takes exception you revisit the errors of the past with new hope as everything comes full circle and you realize...
...hey, it’s all good.

i am starting to try and make a longboard. i am going to use baltic birch but i'm confused on vertical and crosshatch wood. are vertical panels just the wood cut with the grain and crosshatch is against the grain? i'm a big guy, 220lbs, and i don't know how many plys to use. can i use 7, should i add some fiberglass, do i shape it differently? if i add fiberglass to make it stiffer, is that the same as a ply of wood or just something between 2 plys? how do i measure concave and flex? i'm new to board building but i'm good at woodworking and useing my hands. anything you guys can tell me would be great. nick

Ever had everything worked out in your head perfectly? Ever try what you thought of? Ever had just about everything backfire? Ever had the successive procedrural failures followed by the failure of equipment...lets say a vaccuum press? First foam board.. went about 50% the way I wanted it to. put bagging film over it, and lo and behold, she won;t pull. Screamed for a bit, swore, but still no dice. Guess I should learn from my mistakes, but until then I think a temper tantrum will do - Feel like joining?
ON a notably brighter note, I lent one of my boards out to a local, riding for longer than I have been around. He loved it. I know you can allways tell a good board from a bad one, but feedback from reliable outside sources is priceless.

Replying to some posts.
wood for laminating your own skateboards Go to www.roarockit.com New shippment of 1/16 Canadian hard Maple 10.5 x 48 will be here this Monday. there is a lineup for the stuff. Email me at ted@roarockit.com if you are interested in some. This material is milled by a company that supplies veneer to large deck companies across the states. Our last order had a lot of birdseye and am expecting the same with this.
How stiff is stiff? www.boardtesting.com This kid put a huge amount of work into this site. Even though it is street deck info is is great and worth looking at. It may help you with seting up your tests. Our decks did not do well because I made a mistake and used, on the 5 decks I sent him epoxy that had been sitting around for a year. My fault.
A Little Advice Please (The best way to add kicktails/concave/camber is to get 3 ply "Multiply" and glue them together using some kind of mold)
Filling in the blanks for the guy: Here is a list of sites that talk have mold information: http://www.geocities.com/dpkumph/Skateboarding.htm http://www.toothless.tk/ Lots of info here http://www.roarockit.com There is a bunch of how-to videos that I have done including a 18 minute one on building a foam mold (not a skateboard deck)for use in a vacuum bag. It will give you an idea of how to build a mold.

Board Building Advice

The plywood you seek is commonly refered to as "Multiply", or sometimes as "Baltic Birch". (not to be confused with regular birch plywood). You can tell the difference between "regular" plywood and "Multiply", by counting the number of laminates. In a 3/4 inch thick piece, "regular" birch plywood will have 5 or six plys. "Multiply", in the same 3/4 inch thickness will have something like 13 (or maybe 15). A lot more. Where I live "Multiply" is kind of hard to come by (they don't carry it at the local lumber yard). You may have to search for it a little bit. Anyway, you can make boards out of "regular" plywood but they won't be nearly as strong. The best way to add kicktails/concave/camber is to get 3 ply "Multiply" and glue them together using some kind of mold to the desired thickness (probably 9 or 11 ply for a 40" deck depending on the amount of flex you want). If a Kicktail is all you really want then you could buy the proper thickness plywood (again, for a 40" board probably 9 or 11 ply depending on how much flex is desired), then soak and bend the wood. Some say this does'nt work all that well but I've made a bunch of 3/4 inch boards with "soak and bend" kicks and they all came out great and have lasted for years without the kick getting flat or the plywood weakening.

anything works

anyhting works for a board if you are willing to accept the consequences of using cheap materials. for example, i found a 21'' by 4'' batman skateboard at toys 'r' us, put on some old krux that i had and some flashbacks and Lucky 7 bearings, and the thing hauled ass: problem is, with size 12 shoes and only a 21'' board, deadly speed wobble and loss of balance are very common. i got the thing up to 35 mph in Murietta Cali. being followed by my buddy in his car... then i got death wobbles and nearly died. i broke my wrist and have since retired my stupid idiot board for a more sensible 39'' custom birch board, which is my second custom, and hopefully, things will be better this time around. so those of you just getting into this, as i am, you can use anyhting you want really, but be careful, and don't be stupid, you might break your wrist. [wear knee pads] -Cory
p.s. i did not build a 21'' board for bombing hills, i'm not that retarded, i built it for park riding, but almost got arrested for breaking into the local skate park, so i decided to try bombing a couple of times, and the results were as described above
