the blocks of wood on your axles should look like wooden pedals with the outside dimensions of your wheels.

figuring out the shape

all those measurements you ask for are sort of variable,i would press the core for the board and drill the holes for the trucks(nice and straight),including the drop through holes. mount up the trucks and make a block of wood that's as long as the diameter of you wheels(83mm for instance and as wide as the wheels, drill a 5/16 hole for the axle. It's kind of hard to explain to specificly i hope you can figure out where this is going but with a bit of wood mounted up on the axleyou should be easily steer the trucks and see(and draw) what the line of the board needs to be,give it like a 1/4 inch clearence to allow for sloppy pivot.

Interesting you guys talking about cutting snowboards. A few years back I took a 1993 Morrow Multipro 170 and cut a pintail out of it. This was a very stiff and unforgiving snowboard which turned into a super fun responsive 36" pintail. The foamcore and (yes) the chunk of sheet aluminum plate, which I sawed right through, gave it a nice poppy flex. Too bad I tried to make it a drop through mount 4 weeks ago & delamed the hell out of it. I think if you could grab one of the older stiff alpine snowboards off ebay cheap, that would be an interesting cut. I've had a lot of loser ideas too in the modification area, I think I'm just gonna fricken buy a Rayne Hellcat and give it a rest.

HUGE problem

Well herbn, the board is actually pretty flexy so i guess this is now a bigger problem. oh well i dont really care becasue this board was just a prototype, and the flex will mean it will carve pretty well. im using force r7 trucks, which are essentially randal r2s with a 175mm hanger. they are apparently better than randals, but il have to wait and see. the board is already 10 inches wide. But can you please tell me how far the distance is from the hole of the dropthrough to the nose of the board?? can you also please tell me how wide the neck on your average drop through speedboard??? and finally how far do the cutaways for the wheels go back from the nose/tail?? many thanks

doesn't seem like a HUGE problem really, not as bad as to thin and flexy.just grind away the area of the deck that rubs, what trucks you using? wheelbite areas vary, maybe you got 150's? one other aspect of 180's, they let a drop though deck be a little wider they put the wheels further out.

hey, im really disappionted with myself because iv just finished my new drop through speed board with carbon fibre and concave, and when i set the thing up to see how it looks i found that the neck of the board is too wide and the wheels hit it in a hard turn. Also the wheels hit the shoulders of the dech.. I HATE WHEELBITE!!!!!
Anyway i tried to design that deck off a kebbek hairpin, and so i was wondering how wide is the neck on the hairpin??how far back from the nose/tail is the drop through hole??finally how far back are the shoulders from the inside bolthole??
please please please someone help me, because on my next board i dont want to spend all the money on carbon fiber and epoxy resin and have the deck just not work. anyway please help me thanks

in the "search" for the answer to kicking tail and conning caves, i always found that reading into what others have posted before asking... for it... provided more satisfaction akin to discovering it on my own.

I use a rasp and sandpaper for the roundede edge. The rasp is just for the rough pre-cut and the sandpaper for the final shape.

To get the nice smooth rounded edge on a board you need to clamp it down tight and use a router bit the name of the kind escapes me get back to you on that

Kevin, that's a great observation about metal titanal plate inserts on snowboards! I'd almost forgotten that could be an issue, but boards made before '94 could easily be using the 'ski-screw' mounting method (Very Scary!) for bindings, and they're tough to Saw Through!! If the snowboard has Inserts, it likely (though not exclusively) dosen't have the titanal plate in it. 4x4 inserts are indeed a great 'truck-placement-aid', as the holes nearly line up (across the deck) with truck's base hole-pattern. Go between the inserts, but in-line with them, to best place your trucks. This put the strongest part of the snowboard over your axles, and makes for the best flex overall. A longer wheelbase than that, and you'll be out in the 'flexy' part of the board (which is fine for some; good for smooth-ride cruisers), but stay near the inserts, and the board will only moderately.

Used to be made of Wood!! UMHWH plastic took over quickly, and, yup, is pretty close to Cutting boards. Sounds like you've found a freebie!

Nimblynimbly wants to know what rails are made of? Many are made from the same stuff as slide glove pucks,i.e. Ultra High Molecular Weight Poly Ethylene a.k.a.UHMWPE. It has long stings of molecules that resist abrasion better than most other plastics. If you want to make your own just go into any hardware store that has a kitchen department and buy a plastic chopping board-it's the same stuff-and you should be able to cut several sets from it,depending how long a chopping board you can find of course! You could also ask at restaurants or fast food joints if they have any they want to chuck out-I noticed in Wendys they have long narrow blocks at the food prep positions, just right for some longer rails to be cut from!

Derek, I have cut down 3 different snowboards and made longboard/slalom decks out of them. Try to stay away from the older boards that have a metal metal sheet in the core. Get yourself a fine jigsaw blade, trace your desired outline, drill a hole at the edge of your outline, stick your jigsaw blade through the hole and cut it out. Put a little epoxy around the edges, or a bumper made from narrow self stick rubber automotive doorguard material. The binding mounting holes on a standard (4X4) snowboard are the right width to use some for truck mounting holes and alignment. Have fun with it!

hey i was wondering if it is possible to make a 6 foot snowboard into a longboard. I put my longboard trucks in the place where i would place then and then stood in the middle of the board and it was close to touching the ground so i would probably need risers. I was wondering if ne has done this and how successful it was.

Cutting Down Independent trucks to old tracker mids size. Another idea would be to sell indy's on ebay for $20-$25. Then buy brand new re-issue mids direct from Tracker Trucks or others for about $45... cheers Vintage Man

ok then so urethane glue is out of the question(thanks shapeshifter)..what other alternatives do i have to choose from besides epoxy?i would use epoxy but apparently i would need to keep it under vaccum for 24 hrs and our bag has too many leaks.do i need to keep it under vaccum for 24hrs or could i just wait until it gels and let it dry like that??is there any catalyst i could add to the resin in order to make it set faster??
another question, what would be reccomended to waterproof the rails of my board which has an epoxy layer of glass on the top and bottom, but nothing on the rails??i have been using this varnish stuff but it goes yellow and is difficult to put on.is there any sort of acrylic water based spray available on the market that would be suitable??thanks.

urethane glue works but it can expand and foam out. it will stick to vinyl vac bags too.

what will be a good glue to laminate a speedboard with? i am considering epoxy but its going to be done in a vaccum bag so it has to dry for 24hrs, and maintaining pressure would be a problem.i have looked into using a urethane based glue that is yellow in colour and costs a lot less than epoxy. if anyone has any experience with this stuff please let me know.thanks
