Wrist guards simply transfer the injury from your palms/wrists to your forearms, *elbows*, or even shoulders. Ask anyone who has worked ski partol about broken forearms/elbows from wrist-guarded snowboard crashes.
Slider gloves, on the other hand, give you the opportunity to *dissipate* the sudden impact over many feet and often times avoid any injury at all. They also let you brake Coleman Slide style, the best braking method I'm aware of.

Hey I am almost 40 and looking to skate again. Just bought a longboard, but I don´t want to go to any hill until I am oiled and well protected. I already have knee and elbow pads. I am looking for a Helmet and, slide gloves or wrist guards, but don´t know what´s best. What do you use?

Haim, see that banner on the left... the PD or ProDesigned pads are the best. period. You won't get that kind of blow out of the seems. The are the best pads.

I'll apologize up front if this has been discussed before..
I bought a pair of Pro-Tec Ramp pads in may, and by september they were unusable. The whole covering on one side of the pad came apart at the seams, leaving the foam innards exposed to the environment. I don't think I'm a particularly abusive skater - 1-2 sessions a week on wood mini ramps, plus a week in july skating crete bowls in Coronado.
1. Is there any point in complaining to Pro-Tec?
2. What other products will give me a good long wear for my money?
Just as a footnote, I had the Pro-Tec Street pads for a full two years of use before they gave up the ghost, which explains my disappointment...

Hi Judy,
I hope I can pick your brain on a new helmet. I have one of the new top of the line Trek Hybrid bikes. I usually ride about 20 or so miles every day. I ride in a heavy used bike route to the beach. The problem is I have been wearing my skateboard helmet which draws a lot of looks with all the iron cross stickers and death box stickers ect. I need a bike helmet that's will save my head. But I don't need a full race road warrior helmet. Just a casual but safe helmet. I have looked on eBay as well as your web site but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. There are just to many choices, Thanks in advance Ed E.... I hope to see you at the worlds in Morro Bay

Hey Mark, does the visor remove from the semi? I had a similar experience with the Bucky Lasek B2 helmet. I wear an XL burnquist Ace helmet, which while very comfortable is merely flimsy foam padding. After a years use it's about as good as a souvenir baseball batting helmet. I got the Lasek B2 in an XL and it was nowhere near big enough. I've since seen that Pro-Tec makes a bmx version of my ace helmet which looks to have the B2 insides. The model is a Mikey Aitken, but I'm assuming that this would be tight as well. Does anyone have experience with the Pro-Tec bmx helmets?

FWIW,
I have an oval head. Based upon recommendations on NCDSA, I tried a Boeri Steez XXXL (63cm+) and a Gyro Nine.9 XXL (60.5-62.5cm).
I started writing a review of these, but posted it...
Bottom line: I ended up keeping the Gyro. The Gyro is just a smidgen tight at the center of my forhead -- but MUCH better than my previous Protec XL. It is a LOT lighter than the Protec OR the Boeri helmet -- I forget it is on after a few minutes of wear.
The Boeri fit great front-to-back, but was WAY too loose on the sides (i.e., it would 'jiggle' back-and-forth as my head moved, etc.). Plus, the Boeri has a nylon mesh that stays in place after removing the ear muffs. These are a bit of an anoyance (to me, anyway).
If you want my full review, LMK. However, since each person is different, I'd recommend ordering two (or more) helmets and sending back what you don't like.

Pass them on to a needy (knee-dy?) rider. I got a super bargain on a good set this week, but before that was using sub-standard, small pads. If someone had offered me a set of scuffed up, smelly old GOOD pads, I would've been all over it, and very grateful!
As a very poor learning rider at 41, every little bit helps.

I'll look for that one, it's supposed to fit to 63. Of the normal-sized Giro bike helmets I've only seen one that fit (and it was the very top-line road helmet for silly money). The ProTec XL only fits to 60 cm, no way that will work.

My normal/former helmet is an XL Bucky Lasek Pro-Tec. It's the soft foam variety, so it's not certified. I ordered an XL Lincoln Ueda B2 Pro-Tec, and couldn't get it past my ears. Same company, same size, no go. I have fairly oval-shaped head, so I started looking for a new/safer lid. Found the Giro Semi, which is certified, and has excellent coverage (very similar in appearance to conventional skate helmets), and nice sizing pads, too.
Definitely one to consider.

Neil, I've got an oval-shaped noggin too. I tried numerous XL helmets from both skate and snow boarding companies. Red's XL is more like other companies' XXL, were they to offer that size. Mine is an older model and has minimal insulation and no ear flaps. Many snowboarding helmets allow those items to be removed since conditions can vary so widely on the slopes. Worth a look.

I think I'd prefer a more pure skate helmet. I get way too hot for a snowboard helmet. I do note that Red says their XL is for 62 cm though, but my experience is that most helmets for 62 cm are still too small for me due to my oval shaped head. If they say fits 62-64 like the XXL Ravine I have then maybe it might fit.

Neil, I wear a snowboarding helmet by a company named Red (now Burton Red). Their XL fits my melon when other XL helmets won't. Those I see pictured on the web have ear flaps that I believe are removable (mine has none).

Does anyone make a skate-style helmet for a big head, ie 62 cm+, preferably with an oval fit? For those Giro reps that hang out here, my XXL Ravine is a little too snug front to back. I have a road helmet from a couple of years ago that fits OK, forget which Giro model but it was specifically designed for big melons. Currently using a 25 year old Flyaway.

I am sure you do. This was uncalled for on my part. I know it, you know it. Please forgive me.
I do appreciate the attempt to help. I just get a little tired of what amounts to name dropping as the sole or even primary endorsement for a given product. I am an engineer, so I tend to dwell in a different place.
Problem is I got right pissy about it, and it came across stronger than I intended. So, once again, I say: Sorry.
I would have bought the Mad Max II. I wanted to. The sizing was a smidge too small. If we are going on the endorsement of just the people wearing Giro helmets alone, I would have to say that despite MY particular pet peeve, it is clear that the product is superior. I wish it fit. Given that it does not, I went a different route, I am not sorry for that, but I remain humbly apologetic for what came across as a realtively sh**** tone in response to you attempt to help.
