I went by that hardware store again today and I got a piece for free, big enough for 4-6 gloves.
It's called TRESPA, it's covered with some layer that makes it look like counter top material indeed. It's heavy, and I think it has less rebound than cutting board material, but I haven't tested it or anything. I'm gonna make some gloves for my brother and me, and we'll see how it holds up.
O yeah, I also bought a really cheap square circle, those things always come in handy:)

There is a new plastic that is similar to cutting board material that is being used to make kitchen counter tops. It is apparently available at the "home" stores. I will try to get by there to check it out and I will let you know... HR

Today I was at a hardware store and I told them I needed a strong piece of plastic, and I described what I wanted to do with it (built slidergloves), and one of the guys working there said I needed TRESPA(?), it is used in construction, he said it's the hardest plastic around.
Has anyone heard about this, used it?
He said I could get a piece big enough for gloves for free, I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow. I hope it'll work since I've never made a slide before and I'm anxious to try it.

Attila...wot's the description of those gloves? Found a couple of pairs on EBAY - nothing special: OLD SKOOL GLOVES 'Thunderwear'...nope! SKATE/ROLLER gloves 'Brass Eagle'...nope!
Couldn't find anything else that's even half decent.
Is there anything stylish out there? the gloves @ FLEXBYUG are naff too!...I'd look like a 3 fingered alien!
I've gotta think of my SUPERCOOL image, so that even when I arse those slides up, I still look COOL!

Chris, Had I been there then you would have been the second slowest guy out there!
I personally applaud your effort. It takes a lot of guts to go and put it on the line with the big boys!! To those of us sitting on the porch what you have done is called "running with the big dogs".
I hope to be up to speed sometime soon so that I can have the distiction of being "The slowest of the fastest" HR

I ended up taking your advice and using a motocross helmet. The visability is real good. The only problem is that I had to use goggles, because that don't make visors for that type of helmet. Then again, it gave me an excuse for being the slowest guy out there.

You gotta make slidergloves,you can stop almost any run at anytime ,even if it means beating on your wheels, if your feet slide off you just slide in a bert position on your feet.A lot of carnage is avoided,pads help avoid irritating burns should you still get road burns.Workgloves ,plastic UHMW,lace it on,ShoeGoo it solid.

After intense investigation and a little luck I finally ran into a source who had about 20 pairs of new old stock various padded leather skating gloves, including RECTOR, CLAWZ, THUNDERWEAR and various other heavy duty suede gloves. They certainly don't make them like these anymore. Also, all of these gloves are new so can either wear them or just put them in your display case. I bought all of them and would like to pass the goods along at $ 25.00 a pair. You can email me with questions. I'm phsyched!

I am so amazed that nobody carries skating gloves anymore. Seems like the industry has completely forgotten about plain street or downhill cruising. I contacted Rector and they don';t make any gloves anymore either. The only ones I was able to find are the harbinger wrap around skating gloves which fit nice and snug but seem like they'll wear thin after a couple of spills. Anybody out there, we need well made cowehide skating gloves that are as rugged as construction gloves but with preferable replacable padding !!! Where can I find those PAWN fingerless gloves?

Kip freestyle paws in the 1970's were amazing gloves with vents in teh rear. Basically a padded driving glove with full fingers. The rector gloves were popular but wore out quickly. The best thing I have found by far are the New Pawn fingerless gloves with dual density padding and kevlar pams with double stitching and a leather supportive wrist wrap with dual velcro. Really awesome glove. I want to buy more just in case they go under.

On the subject of the old Rector leather gloves. I use a pair for when I ride downhill.I was lucky to find them. Rector is still around, www.rectorsports.com but thier glove of today is geared more towards the street skater. I do reccomend thier elbow and knee pads though. Still tough and well padded.

Attila,dive into the links here,and take a nice,slow look at Harbinger safety gear.They've got some really nice gloves,but what I really like is the wristwraps,which unlike stiff wristguards,don't have the plastic splints in them.These are very comfy,breathe well,and feel like a skateglove most of the time,but add an element of wrist protection that gloves can't.Habinger makes truly good stuff,so look at all their stuff,but buy the gloves or wraps.

I just picked my new G&S 38" pintail slalomboard with power paws and torsion trucks from longskate and took a nasty spill on a rough street today which neately removed quite a bit of skin on my right hand. It's amazing how pissed off you can get about yourself. Ok, I figured, I'll just buy some gloves but couldn't find any at any of the local skate stores. Nobody seems to carry them anymore. Does anybody have any suggestions as to where get Rector gloves or similar handprotection? I'll certainly be wearing those from now on, no matter what. The bummer is that I have to work on a photoshoot tomorrow schlepping gear and lighting equipment around all day long! I guess I'll get the percodan ready !

The kind of helmet Manu is wearing is a boardercross helmet. The kind they use for snowboard racing. You can also use a motocross helmet but they would be a few tenths of a second faster due to the large vents. i know helmethead.com has some proteck helmets, and if you lookaround hard enough, i'm sure you will find it.
