Hopefully Gary won't whomp me for answering this one.

I have the 'super single' for the park use
and the 'recreational' model for slalom use.

the super single (~$100) are giant. 1.5" of padding.
The padding goes around to the sides of the knees a
fair bit. They work great but are pretty bulky.
I bail in the deep end at van's pool with no
concerns at all. knee sliding is cool.

the 'recreational' pads still have good protection but
are cheaper and way way less bulky. They might even have
less slip down because they sit closer to your skin.
they have 3/4" of padding I think.

If I am slaloming I use the recreational pads.

If I were you I would get the 'recreational' pads for
longboarding and slalom.

I got mine from www.eastcoastskates.com.

Best All Round Pad (Longboard/Slalom)
On 3/19/2003 Rob wrote in from (209.250.nnn.nnn)

I am in the process buying a new set of knee/elbow pads and I am looking for recommendations for which are best. I am hoping for a pad that is good for slalom and longboarding.

I am based in Canada, so I need a vendor that will to the north.

Thanks

Rob

wearing pads
On 3/18/2003 Tom M. wrote in from (164.227.nnn.nnn)

I can relate to what Mark said. Back in the '60s I did some "sidewalk surf'n". Now (at 49), I'm into all sorts of skateboarding.

I always "suit up" at the parks, but -- until last Fall -- didn't "suit up" for downhill.

Sunday -- my first day on a real road after a long Winter -- found me sliding just over 30 feet on my hands and knees without a scratch (in fact, it was kinda fun <g>).

The SlideGear (from slidegear.com) slider "gloves" and my PD kneepads more than paid for themselves in just this one bail.

(gotta remember how freak'n sandy the streets are since this gnarly Winter...)

wearing pads
On 3/17/2003 G. Mark wrote in from (199.46.nnn.nnn)

I'm an old geezer. I have skated off and on since about 1968 or so, mostly streets, ditches, and downhill. Up until a few months ago, I rarely ever wore pads (except for wrist guards - I play drums). One day late last year, I was looking at a CCS catalog and I decided to price some pads: a full set, with helmet, came to around $150. Then, I started to think "How expensive is a trip to the hospital?" No comparison there, even with insurance.

I bought the pads and helmet, and have been wearing them ever since. It takes longer to 'get dressed' to skate, but it's worth it. What I've found is that, when I bail, instead of trying to catch myself and lessen the impact, I can let the pads take the punishment. It's actually less of a strain this way. I also find I am a little less afraid of the bigger hills than I used to be.

I took a lot of chances for a lot of years, and I was lucky that I didn't get hurt worse than I ever did (a few hundred miles of road rash, and one stress-fractured metatarsal). Maybe it's just the wisdom of old age, but now that I'm older is not the time to get hurt bad! I want to continue to be able to skate with my son as he grows up.

Buy yourself some safety gear and wear it. Not getting hurt is the most cool. I know the 'dork factor' can be a difficult thing to deal with, but is it worse than being hurt and not skating at all? Think about it.

pads in the UK
On 3/13/2003 gavin wrote in from (195.194.nnn.nnn)

dion, billys bmx (www.billys.co.uk) used to do the odd PD pad, but up around 100quid.

a good alternative to look at are TSG 'Force' pads. i bought some of the force 2 knee pads and am very impressed, especially as they come in at 49quid. the wristgurds are about 20quid.

Wrist guards, helmets
On 3/3/2003 Joe wrote in from (65.19.nnn.nnn)

PD wrist guards are the best, our whole team wears them every day we ride, and we wear them under our slider gloves for downhill too. Mtn bike helmets are not as safe as motocross helmets for downhill, they flex quite a bit, try it. Then try to flex a DOT motorcycle helmet. That's what comnvinced me to use a motorcross helmet. Safer comes before more Aero in my book.

Regarding the PD wrist guards.....they are the best period....they last long and are comfortable.

general helmet info
On 2/28/2003 sparky wrote in from (216.142.nnn.nnn)

Many of you ask about whether to use motorcycle, bicycle, or even auto racing helmets for downhill skating. Generally, skate and bicycle helmets, including downhill racing bicycle helmets, are certed to either the CPSC bicycle standard or an ASTM equivalent standard. These helmets are tested at about 14 mph onto a stainless steel, flat anvil. The Snell certified auto and motorcycle helmets are hit at about 17 mph. Without getting too nerdy, yes, the mc and auto helmets offer more protection. But, if you hit a wall at 30 mph head on, all these helmets will be overwhelmed, with bad results. Reading owner's manuals for any helmet you consider is essential to learn of the limits.

PD's
On 2/28/2003 Dion wrote in from (62.255.nnn.nnn)

Anybody know where I can get a set of Pd's over here in the UK? I've tried ordering direct but those guys are not set up for credit card orders or paypal. We can order using international money order, but with admin etc, it works out really expensive. Maybe there's a freindly shop over on your side that could send 'em to me. Also what are the PD wristguards like? I've yet to see them in the flesh. I'm currently using the cheaper Protec which are adequate but don't seem to last more than about a month! Sadly it's all we can get over here. I did try the bigger Rector ones but they seem restrictive especiaaly when attempting inverts or laybacks. Any help on the PD's would be much appreciated.
Peace

Sasha, I'd call the company direct (1-800-964-5993) and ask them for a dealer in your area. I've seen them retailed at bike shops and shops that cater to roller bladers. I have a pair myself (http://www.crash-pads.com/dept.asp?no=0) and they're great.

I have read the positive crash pads reviews and would like to get myself a pair. My question is this, does anyone sell them in person anywhere so I can check out the product size wise before buying? I'll be at the Deathbox contest if anyone has some they're selling and could bring them. Thanks so much!
