OK, I'm a little lost here. Maybe its because I'm "new school" What is more fun about the old style boards? Is it just the nostalgia feeling?

What amazes me is how much of that stuff I've had and broken over the years... shit, just on the trucks page I've had Bennets, Lazers, Trackers of all flavours. And on the decks... I've probably owned 6 or more of those boards. All dust now.

Just got back from the Del Mar Fair. The "evoloution of the skateboard" exhibit was a little disapointing since thats what I expected it to be. What it really is is about 20 prime pieces from Dale Smiths collection. I'd say they are all late '50's, early '60's pieces. Tiny little decks, rollerskate trucks with clay wheels. Really neat 1st gen stuff. Most of the boards had Makaha wheels. Even better than the boards were the literature. He's got framed covers of the early "Quarterly Skateboard" mags and lots of old black&white ads from that era including what must be the 1st NASH ad. Great stuff.
He has a web site: skateboardhistory.com

axle sleeves

Axle sleeves are now mostly found on in-line skates, but came from old roller-skates.Roller-skates used 7mm axles back in the days of loose-ball bearings, and when precision bearings started to become common, using 608 bearings for 8mm axles, the skateboard industry made that the standard. During the period of time that both were in use, people using 7mm axles would add the sleeves to step up to 608-type precision bearings. Why in-lines use a 7mm/sleeve combination is beyond me.And since the bearing change-over,roller-skates used 607-type precision bearings that fit 7mm axles perfectly.608's and 607's are really just industrial precision bearings, often used in light power tools, such as sewing machines, and aren't really designed for the abuse of modern skateboarding.Another axle/bearing sleeve that occasionally sees use is with a larger bearing that would normally fit a 10mm axle, specially fitted into a larger bearing seat, for downhilling, skatecars, and streetluging.

What are axle sleeves? Would that be another name for bearing spacers? Just curious. I'm only 22 so I don't know a lot about the pre-80's stuff.

I just picked up a near-new pair of 1970's quad skates with what look to be 65mm blue Kryptonic blanks. Upon disassembling the wheels (my reason for buying the skates) I found two nice sets of NTN double sealed bearings, and... axle sleeves! I had never seen them before but they effectivly upsize the old loose bearing axle (complete with D shape)! to a larger size to fit 608 bearings. I'll try to post some pics soon of both the wheels and the sleeves.

I made axle sleeves just the other day, only this time it was to run 10mm bearings on 5/16 axles,by the way this also eliminates the play of running 8mm bearings on 5/16 axles, comes around, goes around.

I had them on my Bahne which had Chicago trucks. I also had them on a homemade deck that I rode the most that had pre-precision bearing Bennett's.

does anyone remember axel sleeves, I remember when I was a kid, I wanted to make the big jump up from looseball wheels but my old trucks could not accomadate bearing wheels so they had to take some sort of a sleeve and place it on the axel. I was in silk heaven now my Hobie Super Surfer had Road Rider 2's on the suregrip trucks. I thought it was the cats pajama's

I have over 350 pics of old boards pre 80's including some of the first snowboards, one of these days when I feel the time is right I'm going to make a photo book of vintage skateboards. For now If someone had an old board that they would really like a pic of it send me an e-mail and I'll zip it to you. If anyone has any old boards they can send me a pic of as well, that would be way cool too, or even original advertisments would be awsome.

Sorry, but still no pics...yet.I have come to the conclusion that the hardest part of this project is getting all four trucks in alignment. It would be easier if I had Half-Tracks but they aren't as available as the Mids I'm gonna put on.I should have the trucks mounted by tommorrow so we'll see how it goes.
