Making shields for helmets.
On 10/15/2000 Danny Connor wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

Hey guys,
I want to make my own shield for my helmet (one just like VanBommel and Dread were using in the gravity games) but I have never done it before. Can ANYONE give me ANY info on the best way to do this. Materials to use, how to cut it, personal tips, websites, or anything would all help. Thanks a bunch.

The thing that I liked about that event, is the different styles of riding down the hill, mainly because I haven't seen how the europians do it.
I also noticed that only one rider was goofy foot (and took last as well.).
Did you see that colman slide at one of the ends of the races?

In the end i was glad about John Dread and the rest of the dregs team winning, because i think John deserved it. I was disappointed about not seeing Manu or lee Dansie do better than they did, because both of them also really deserved a win. i taped the whole thing and will defivitely watch it again.

Well I haven't touched my longboard in about 8 weeks, and I finally located the soapbox dirby track in Omaha Nebraska, and I had the whole thing to myself, except I think now I gotta tighten my trucks because I was getting speed wobbles. I first started at the flat part of the hill, then easing my self up the hill, and back down, slowly gaining my confidence. I finally gave up for the night when I was over half way up the hill and was getting some nasty speed wobbles in the process.
who knows maby I might do a little more today.

Dread, etc.
On 10/12/2000 todcar wrote in from (198.39.nnn.nnn)

I was in no way putting down Dread's performance, just commenting that Bryant didn't look like he wanted to win. I could be completely wrong - just an observation that I was curious about - there's no way I can see into a racer's mind or heart and was just curious what others thought. Thanks for your comment Jimmy - after all, you were there, I wasn't.

Coming from behind
On 10/11/2000 Chris Chaput wrote in from (63.168.nnn.nnn)

There is something about being behind in a race that seems to turn on the afterburners. You are like a heat seeking missile that gets the other rider in its sights and homes in on him. In the qualifier with no one else on the road, I wound up 12 seconds behind the 2nd place qualifier. In the semifinals I was dead last after the two hairpins but was able to reel him in and pass him along with another rider somewhere in the middle of the course. In the finals I was third after the two hairpins and then got too greedy. The second place rider was close and I thought a couple of pushes would get me closer sooner. I got off balance on my final push and had to run off my board and the jump back on (dip weed rookie maneuver). This is the kind of thing that haunts you and your mental replays in the land of "shoulda-coulda-woulda". I know I could have made one pass for Silver, and maybe another for Gold, but instead got passed for fourth. This is the kind of race experience that keeps you humble, teaches you some valuable lessons, gives you insight on what others do to win. Every time I go out and race I learn so much. Some is from the school of hard knocks, some is from paying attention, some is from just going for it. The guys in this sport are all characters and all down to earth. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who puts on the leathers and says "what the hell, let's do it" is cool in my book. If anyone out there wants to join in and give it a go, I'll personally introduce you to the gang and help you get started. Riding with others in race-like conditions is the single best way to get faster bar none. When you beat me to the bottom, the lesson is over.
;)

DREAD deserved it!
On 10/11/2000 FLINDT wrote in from (209.178.nnn.nnn)

I was at the Gravity Games and watched Dread smoke Cavey, the point is if you want to win, you can win. It takes a lot of focus to be that far behind in a race and still have that drive. Dread is awesome! He deserved that win, I learned a lot from that race watching it in the athletes booth, so did Cavey.

On 10/11/2000 todcar wrote in from (198.39.nnn.nnn)

Did you catch the two-man race on TV sunday for the gold where it looked like Dave Bryant intentionally tanked it so John Dread could get the Bronze? Not sure if he was being cautious or if he wanted to lose. Looked like the latter. Could be the "power" of Dregs, though Biker did say "He shouldn't have done that"

THE TEAM T.V.S.
On 10/10/2000 KLUDY wrote in from (64.12.nnn.nnn)

I love to ride , I love to ride with any one that can run with me .'' The team '' I would not in my dreams think that it would go anywhere. Gary is a top rider he has trained alone from the start. He wins because he is good, nothing to do with team. We all like riding together and just found each other. Dont have the backing of the dreggs so we get what we can to ride with and try to win with it.T.V.S. is a great way to get all of us help to ride the same stuff . We are very new as a team and will have growing pains. I can tell you that all of us are good safe riders that will give any one a run for there money. The more we ride the better we get. A team is whatever you want a team to be.We all are always growing and just now getting to know each other . THANKS FOR THE PICS ,DONT GET TO SEE TO MANY RACES AFTER I RUN THEM. KLUDY

Respect
On 10/10/2000 DT wrote in from (24.4.nnn.nnn)

For the many people who haven't been able to go to a race, let me fill you in. ALL of the riders who are somewhat serious about speedboarding ALL share a common respect for each other while were riding and while were playing jokes on each other. I felt truly bummed when i watched the x-games this year and they played that bit between Biker and Bob P. about taking each other out. That doesn't represent our sport. Truth is that alomost everyone doesnt want to see their "brother" go down, yes it happens thats racing, but its serious when your on the hill and when your off its like a family, we joke around, party together, and have FUN together. I have played team sports all my life, but not a single one compares to the comraderie that is overflowing in gravity sports!

Team Skating
On 10/10/2000 DT wrote in from (24.4.nnn.nnn)

Chris since you haven't been skating with us all year, i will let you know, that TVS does use tactics. Gary, Reed, and myself are on TVS boards that you can buy in stores. and there have been plans for Ricks signature to be available in the near future. Jimmy rides for Freeride. We train together, often travel together, and at some races we have a team massuese (did i spell that right?). Now this may not have occured to you, but not everyone on our team can always afford to go to every race, buy matching leathers(or even new ones with kevlar), speedsuitS,rent a motorhome, and a speed helmet or 2 in case one should be stolen.

Up until this year it has always been Dregs vs Everyone else and they have always been the most victorious. That is why i am so stoked to see another team do so well, and even more stoked to be apart of it. This year in stand up we took home 6 golds (1 more than dregs) 3 silvers (one less than dregs) 6 bronzes (one more than dregs) pro and am; and yes there are am dregs. Once more teams form, i'm sure there will be a team championship as well!

Team Skating
On 10/9/2000 Chris Chaput wrote in from (63.168.nnn.nnn)

I was under the impression that individuals win races and take home the medals with them. I can't remember ever seeing a team trophy or medal awarded at an event. If you decide that a team consists of people helping one another toward a common goal, why didn't Hardwick help pull Golter or Kludy or Lowery? If you decide that a team is defined by a number of riders using the same boards, why do Gary and Rick and Reed and Mark and you all make and ride your own individual designs instead of one team model like Dregs?

My point is simple. If there are a number of good riders in an event on a team, the chances of having a "team member" in the finals and on the podium increase directly. If there is only one "team member" in a event, or there is only one man on a "team", you have the smallest possible chance to win. If you only mention gold medals for teams, you aren't telling the whole story. Which events? Both Amateur and Pro as in Mammoth and Campo? How many riders on each team were at the event? Three out of four Californians on one team, one on another and zero on another like in DC? Five, one and zero like at Barrett Junction? How about Seattle where one four-man team took home four medals, another four-man team took home none, and a one-man team took home two? What about the margin of victory? Eight inches combined in two finals for two teams, or eight feet or more in each race? What about qualifying? It was the tiebreaker in Seattle where 32/100's of a second decided the "King of the Hill" award when Gold/Bronze tied Silver/Silver. Is "King of the Hill" a team victory? Kludy and I qualified 12 seconds behind John Rogers at Barrett Junction and more than erased that difference in pack racing. Even when two guys are acting as a team, as only Biker and Todd can do, at some point in time it is every man for himself, and may the best man win. It was brother against brother in the dual luge final at Barrett Junction. Tell me John wasn't trying to pass Dave at the finish!

I think you and Gary and Mark and Rick and Reed and Jimmy are all great. I respect you as riders and like you as people. I think it would be interesting to see if and how team style riding would evolve in the next few years. I'd love to put some "up-and-comers" on Roughcuts and train together as a team. Until someone other than myself actually posesses a Roughcut speedboard, I humbly submit to you that I am the the captain of a very small team.

GBJ, You gotta love much attention your picture is getting. Ask TVS for money before spending any time on THEIR montage. Come on dude, who got you into that high jump contest where you beat Tony Alva? Who's gonna help get you your next Turner? Where's your loyalty? Lowery and Golter? Dude... ;)

The Case of the Missing Kludy
On 10/9/2000 GBJ wrote in from (205.177.nnn.nnn)

You people are hilarious! Yes, there's a (mostly) missing Kludy. The montage was created by creating very tight squares around each unit of the two riders. I don't have the technology to crop a figure right down to its' own outline. So in the top frame, because of the turn, Rick is actually behind Chris' image in the next frame. If you look very closely, just above Chris' back, you can see a dark "stripe", which is Rick's back from the previous frame, just peeking above the next frame. I'm glad everyone seemed to enjoy it. I'm working on the next one which is of Golter and Lowery.
