long board, short board, why does it matter? set up some cones and see who's the fastest! who cares how long your board is... handycapping yourself with an unappropriate board seems pointless to me.

I'm with Chris on this one. Without negating the accomplishment of someone who does an incredible speed either being towed, or drafting a motorized vehicle; who really cares about it as a record. If other people have no opportunity to attempt to beat the "record", under equal conditions, then what's the point? It's like announcing to the world that I hold the world's record on being "GBJ". I've been "GBJ", the skateboard photographer, for over thirteen years! I'd bet that's a longer time as "GBJ", the skateboard photographer, than anyone else in the world. Believe it or not, I think I've probably got an even stronger, more impressive record being R. Andrew Bittner. I've been doing that for over 38 years. That HAS to be a record.

The crux,ever been towed to good speed on a moderate uphill,and let go; you slow up quick, if you bailed out you'd have less trouble running out of it ,if you fell you wouldn't leave as long a path of skin. It's easier,it's a weighted, more easily controlled ride,so if you get towed to a speed record on a slight downhill it should not count.On a steep downhill the kind you'd need to break records,your forward momentum is lifting you off the road aerodynamicly and physicly,any bumps will make this obvious.If i skate down the eisle of a 747,do they include the speed of the plane,records for humans should be different than those for;lets say,tallest building. You can make the second tallest building no.1 by adding a antennea,but you can't become the worlds tallest man by having a surgical implant in your skull that lets you add an antenna:)

DT, I like how you put words in my mouth that I've never spoken and then tell me that that they are bullshit. If it wasn't so amusing I think I'd be offended. And shame on you too Hugh (and Cindy Lou Hoo) for assuming a disdain that doesn't exist.
We all want acceptance of our deeds and I would happily recognize and respect the effort that anyone makes when attempting to set a new record in a sport. The problem that I have with the specific examples given is that they are isolated and unique stunts which don't actually break any existing records, they merely become a "World Record" by virtue of the rider being the only one doing it. My interpretation of a "World Record" is where someone else in the world is attempting the same feat. I would never tell someone his accomplishment was not legitimate, but I would certainly question its meaningfulness as it pertains to the other generally accepted measures of speed within the same sport.
One guy holds the old "Holding on to the back of the Spirit of America on a 12 foot long skateboard with 24 inch pneumatic tires and letting go 100 meters before the timing device" record. If he's the only guy with access to that vehicle, is it really a world record? It seems to me that the car had more to do with the "skateboarding" record than the "skateboarder". Another guy holds the record for drafting behind a motorcyle, another behind a bicycle, a tricycle, etc. There is no need for gravity or any aerodynamic gear or even getting in a tuck when there is something handling all of the forces for you. Just stand up, hold on, let go, try not to die and don't let anyone else try. As soon as I here "drafting vehicle" my mind quickly wants to know more about the "draftor" and less about the "draftee".
With regard to the aero gear, I like it and anyone else who likes it can use it too. I think that a reasonable rule like the one in speedskiing should be in effect. The helmet must pass through a 40cm ring (and be protective) to pass. You don't have to use one, many don't. I don't tell those who don't that they shouldn't wear what they wear if it is legal and I hope that they would extend me the same courtesy. Getting in and out of my speedsuit is a royal pain in the neck but it works for me. Most people choose not to go there and EDI banned my suit shortly after the Seattle race. Hmmm.
With regard to the luge and buttboard issue, you need more information. All buttboards are luges and all buttboards are pegless but not all pegless luges are buttboards. I want the buttboard class to allow only buttboards (limited to 48" length, 12" width, 70mm wheels, no dropped or lowered CG). I want the Open Class to be truly open, open even to the limited buttboards and pegless luges which are currently prevented from racing in that class. It's similar to allowing 125cc bikes to race in the 250cc or less class but not allowing 250cc bikes to race in the 125cc or less class. IMHO weak lugers are terrified of being exposed by stellar buttboarders and so they are banning the limited luges rather than becoming better lugers.
Time to go to my KKK meeting, Kamrin, Kricket & Kendall await their grand dragon in his pointed white hat and all white outfit ;-)

Who said the person drafting the vehicle has to be on straight land. Lets just say for everyones amusement, that Chris Chaput beats Gary and becomes the World Speed record holder on some 70mph hill, next comes racer X who drafts a vehicle on the same exact hill and shatters the record, we'll say at 85mph. What then Chris, you mean to tell me that you wouldnt consider that seperate record legit, thats such bullshit. Its two different "animals" just like luge and buttboarding. They are different but they still turn by leaning. For one to say to the other, well your not the same so you dont count or your not legit, thats utter bullshit, thats as narrowminded as the KKK. I know i'm getting all worked up on this issue, but i'm sick of seeing double talk. Chris you went on the streetluge website and preached all about how buttboards (aka pegless luge) should be able to compete in the same class as the luge. You talk about how even though they are different they should be in the same class, well i'm saying that these two types of records are different and should be in the same book. Yes these two topics arent directly related, but the principles that they both stand for are. and your on both sides of the spectrum on both webpages, please make up your mind. AND Hughs point is also very true.

really is the best way to determine classes. You could take a 44" dregs maggie with a 5" nose and 6" tail and wind up with shorted wheelbase than a 34" deck with trucks flush to both ends. Which would be the "long" board? According to the current system it would be the one with the shorter wheelbase which of course is nonsense. Perhaps we need to determine a minimum longboard wheelbase (36 inches or so I would say).

Interestingly enough, your board had to be 40" long to qualify for the Longboard GS. I told Scott Peer that I thought my board was 40" and asked him (jokingly) if I could use it in both classes. He told me that I could run it in either class but not both. I borrowed Ed Economy's 56" Supertanker and removed all doubt as to which class I was running in.
I went home and measured my board. 40" exactly. I could have run it in the longboard class (with a winning time), scraped the nose on the asphalt, and then run it the shortboard race (also with a winning time if I quit hitting cones). I think an axle-to-axle wheelbase measurement would be a more meaningful in defining what does and doesn't qualify as a longboard.

Chris C, I am amused by your apparent disdain towards drafting vehicles. I think that a similar argument could possibly be made concerning aero-gear.
Don't get me wrong, I have a tremendous amount of respect for all of the "fast guys" (you included my friend)... with and with out the big hats. But I do find the line of "acceptability" that you appear to be drawing as curious... HR

Sure, but I think that guys who are willing to go over 65mph on a skateboard under gravity are very likely to have the balls to do it whilst towing. All you need is the right....blah blah....i guess it's just a matter of opinion. I wouldn't be AS impressed with a towing record than with a gravity record.
But DT, i must say that the comparison with the inch difference on longboards is fairly well up there with the most bollocks comparisons ever (sorry i sound more rude and obnoxious than i intend)

Sure it takes "balls" to draft something on a skateboard at high speed but the question is, what did it mean? That one car, truck or van when specially equipped with vaccum chambers and air cleaning apparatus is a better drafting vehicle than another vehicle? Sure I'll give anyone credit for doing something outrageous on a skateboard but if he's not doing something differently to enhances his speed over someone elses then it really doesn't mean much to me. I rolled down the aisle of a Concord jet in 1976 at nearly Mach 2 but I don't take a lot of credit for that.
What skaters seem to respect is when someone takes the time to find a killer hill on a killer mountain and bombs it on his own, at a speed that no one else has ever attained while rding something that falls within the generally accepted definition of a skateboard. If others can ride the same hill on the same day to compare speeds, the record is even more credible.
There's a guy who puts rockets on his streetluge and lights up the road. I think it's wonderful. Until there are a number of people doing it and demonstrating that one Rocketman is faster than the other, I don't see the meaningfulness of World Record Rocketluge.

There is nothing wrong with being towed, for someone to say you need gravity to make a record is narrow minded. You just need SEPARATE records. Going 70+mph on a skateboard takes just as much "balls" behind a car or on a hill. Same with drafting a motorcycle down a hill. As long as there are separate records and they are distinguished there shouldnt be a problem. For one person to say, hey thats no good cause you didnt do it naturaly, thats like saying your board is 39" and a longboard is 40" your not a longboarder.
When you look in the record book, their are thousands of records, many of which are very closely related, but with differant variables. All those guys(and girls) deserve the credit.

Hey Danny, Kludy was fast and havin' fun up there at GMR, giving the seasoned vets like Hardwick and Dansie a run for their money. I've got a lot to learn on more technical hills like that. That is a killer hill.
When you're out of school, how'd you like to be an overworked and underpaid Old School Bus driver and skate photographer? It's hard enough for guys like Dave Auld and Chris McBride to race both luges and buttboards but they also manage to take lots of great pictures and share them with the world. It's worse for me because I have so many toys and when I'm entering every event (except gravity bikes, Santa?) the still and video camera rarely leave the case. You'd get to travel a lot but you'd have to sleep in one of the storage containers on the roof when when my wife and baby come along ;-)

The Magic Bus rolled into Speedboarding Paradise today. I had the great fortune to skate with some of the top riders in the world on a newly paved Glendora Mountain Road (GMR) filming an upcoming speedboarding piece for Adrenaline TV. Lee "Leemo" Dansie, Sean "Duck" Mallard, Darryl "the Flyin' Hawaiian" Freeman, the Rogers Brothers, George Orton, Rick Kludy, Gary Hardwick, Mark Golter, Cliff Coleman, Casey and I were out just having fun on our toys. I'll let y'all know when it will air. Tomorrow the same group will join Darren Lott and others at West LA College for a slalom and buttboarding event. This a great time to be skatin' and tomorrow is looking pretty bright too.
