Hey guys,
Did I mention that I was just kidding. I have only done a handfull of slides over 35 mph, and they were to avoid hitting cars, going into cross streets and whatnot. I don't like doing it if I don't have to, it's hell on the wheels and gloves. Just sarcastic joke. I'd probably pee my pants if I saw the hill!

oh and if you fell off your board, you would tumble/slide/ rag doll down the entire hill until you hit the wall, much like those skiers that fall when skiing those huge mountains (where they get dropped off by helicopters) and they tumble for 40 yards or more IN POWDER.

i dont think you realize how steep 33% is. You would likely be going over 100mph before the corner! even if you started a slide near the top, you would simply accelerate out of control. either your wheels would flat spot( and i mean unrideable flat), you would smoke your bearings due to the torsional pressure of the slide, or you'll get really bad wobbles. this of course is if the hill has some length. sounds interesting, how long is this hill? mike please e-mail me.

There is a 90 degree corner on the bottom with this weird concrete and stone mixture that is to rough to even push a skateboard on. So you would just accelerate into the wall at the bottom.

DO you wish your dad was the designer of a +/- 33% grade hill. Yep The local council told him to build it for them.
It was designed for rubbish trucks to go down but not one truck has gone down it yet. It is completely unskatable but it is awsome to look at. He would have made it less of a gradeient but he couldn't get the land around it and was forced to make it a straight drop.

Hey KLUDY and LOWRY,
I want to ride. I have break coming up very soon, and want to go to Mammoth for some hills. For me, it' a little more local; ) Anyhow, I would have called you guys sonner, but I lost the little paper I had with all my DH buddies' numbers on it! My dad is trying to get the 1st through the 7th off, and once again, he will be willing to drive and chase! Maybe my sis will come and film! Perhaps Kuldy can drive to my house, and then from there, my dad will drive us to Mammoth and we can hit some hills. Make weekend out of it? We'll see. PLEASE CALL ME!!!! Oh, and Kludy, mabe Jimmy will want to come? Just an idea.
P.S. Reed, thanks for saying that I own a REAL set of balls. That was too nice of you!

This is so funny what I am about to say , REED does have realy GREAT HILLS , alot like what I have down here , HE HAS NO FILM OF THEM BUT THEY ARE THERE , AND THATS THE WAY WE LIKE IT . SO ! YOU WILL HAVE TO TALK TO REED ABOUT FILMING.When you talk about DOWNHILL to a skateboarder and he is into it , I found out this past weekend that what we do is nite and day to what a skateboarder is thinking about WHEN I SAY BOMBING HILLS .No carving at all , no standing upright . Put your head down and go straight down what seems to be unmakeable , that to me is VERY COOL ! The bigest differance is easy ,I am in full battle gear and a every day skateboarder is in nothing more then some pads here and there. ( its all in your head)

I cant ride the snow anymore until after the holidays, too many spores on the hill. Well Rick, like I was telling you, that road that your truck died on that day has got fresh asphalt on it top to bottom. Tuesday I ride. I havent been on my new TVS since my near fatal 70 MPH snowmobile crash two monts ago, of course I dont have any film footage to back up my story, I can assure you it really happened.
So anyway, tomorrow I ride. Alone. Why do I ride alone you ask? Because theres not another soul in the Sierra Nevada range that owns REAL set balls, except for young Danny Connor but he lives way down in Ridgecrest.
I think some of you D.H. skaters shoujd just drop out of productive society and move to my town.
Well anyway, Ill let you know how it went when I get back.

Just because people talk about going 70mph on a skateboard doesn't mean it's not absolutely insane.
Go, now, to your car. Drive it onto the freeway. Put the pedal down. Take the car up to 70 mph. Put on the cruise control.
Grab the handle and push the door open hard against the whistling wind, enough to roll your body out and onto the asphalt.

I'm just here to back Kludy up on this one... 70 mph, no joke. I was the one driving behind them to clock their speed. Saw some really great runs, and got to train a bit with some really great guys. Look forward to next time.
By the way, the slowest person on that 70 mph run was only plodding along at 65 mph!!! It's all about the soul of the ride.

On the way up or back there are some very cool hills (some quite steep and long, some not... some quite winding, some not) on the road to the Bishop Creek area just west of Bishop (about 10 miles out of town)
Might be worth checking them out... (check post in events for another thought) HR

Good job reed . Thats the way our team is, we invite good poeple to have a great time. I sure would like to try snow boarding. By the way I did 70 MPH on a peace of wood STANDING on a skateboard thur turns . I have no film to back what I say but thats the way I wanted it and I can tell you all, it was a wild ride and my board was drifting side to side , for the 1th time since I started racing I knew that if I was to go down that I would be DEAD ! For sure .It was like my 1th race when I was taking my very 1th turn at 50mph and my foot was coming off my board halfway thur a BIG sweeping right.I have been 60 to 65mph ( alot} BUT AT 70MPH YOUR MINDSET CHANGES AND YOU THINK , MAN I AM GOING TO FAST TO CONTROL THIS WHAT IF !

Just thought that I would let you guys know that Im monitoring your tactics and strageties on this glowing screen.Winter is really starting to get interesting.I havent skated in awhile but the snow is getting abit better in the last few days.Damn near anybody has an invitation to come up to MAMMOTH for some snow riding.KLUDY is my reservationist though.You have to notify him first so he can pack a bag and pay for half your gas up here

At the back of my local surf shop if found amongst the slalom cones, boards trucks and wheels, and other "old" school rarities: A pile of ancient, brown, but mint condition skateboarder mags. There was this pic on a cover of this massive cement water system full-pipe thing, i picked up the mag and underneath found one with street lugers on the cover. It had an article on the speedboarding revival in 1980! they'd just had a comp where the only name i can remember is Beau Brown who came 2nd(my friend cunningly stole the mag from me, which the owner gave to me along with the rest of the pile.
The race they had was, i believe, illegal and held by the underground racers association(i think) at GMR. It had a few pics. Were any of you ex-skaters, now computer nerds, involved in this event. I was pretty stoked
Phhhaah! a downhill revival in 1980...that was the year i was born. I love history

Hugh, I think that many people approach the situation with a psychological bias toward leaving the manufactured product (the truck) alone and then building the deck to accomodate it. When you look at how low the profile is on the baseplates and how small those tabs are, you have to wonder how much strength they really add. Once the baseplate is nestled down in a clean, snug drop-through hole, the board helps the baseplate and vice versa. I've gotten pretty good with the grinder. If I wanted to I could polish them out and no one would know...

Hey Roger,
You and Chris might be right... I am thinking that the area of most likely failure will be at the points closest to the center of the deck (about a quarter inch back from notch)
I think a torture/breakage test is in order. I'll see if I have some wood I can sacrafice. I'll post the specs and testing procedures that I use and some pics. I am thinking that it won't break at the notch.
Maybe you or Chris could try a semi-duplicate test with the non-notched base plates and see where those decks break at.
If mine do break at the notch, then I will re-think/re-tool my posisition/equipment. If not, then the notchs are here to stay!

I have to disagree with you on this one. Notches greatly weaken a deck and creates a focal point for stresses. Something like a notch in a ketchup packet that says "tear here". If it is going to crack, you know where to look
