Braking

Leo, You usually must "airbrake" for a stretch before braking. Airbraking is when you stand up with your arms out and are trying to be a parachute instead of a bullet. This slows you down considerably but gently. During this time you also position your feet for braking by dragging one foot. Some, like John Rogers, even allow their drag foot's heel to contact the front side of the back wheel to assist in slowing (not a good idea for the newbie).

hesitation and pain

Just remember friends , DONT LET THE FEAR FACTOR interfere
with your run. I've noticed that always around half way to
3/4's the way down big steep hills is when my equipment and I question each others ability to correct speedwobbles, etc.
My confidence is put to the test, so I instinctively snap into this ATTACK mode which has pulled me through many a times. If you dont make the crucial weight distribution
adjustments when you need to and hesitate, you'll be sorry.

ok, i personally think the speed was stretched a bit, but....

just because the photo shows him without pads, doesnt mean he skated his "72mph" hill without leathers, etc. I've seen some of the dirt video and have seen guys riding hills that are at least a 20% grade if not more. It would have had to been done off road, cause with those wheels, there's no way of him hitting those speeds on a road (unless he was being towed)... just something to think about.

This next year, the X-games has dropped the dual streetluge in favor of having a downhill off road bike race, there is also supposed to be another race that i'm not aware has been announced yet. but i wouldnt be the least bit surprised if its MOUNTAIN BOARDING since it could use the same exact track.

Barrett Junction / 72mph

I agree with Frank about the hill with one exception. The bottom of that hill is long, fairly fast and non-technical. These three important features make a speedsuit and speed helmet extremely valuable. There is only one way that I can truly prove this point. Unless lightning strikes twice, I won't be runing off of my board in the finals this February.

You know the 72 mph story is factual when the guy is practicing for the X-Games which doesn't even feature downhill skateboarding!

Living at Barrett

Barrett the course"Living it".I'v been living eating and sleep'n and riding at the course here at Barrett Junction for a year and a half. I can say I Probably Know the course pretty well. I would like to share a little bit about it.I ride it mostly in the day and at night with a chase car for lights even in the rain whene you can get realy slidways in the wet corrners.To Ride B/J is to learn somethting on every run.You seen the photos and heard the stories of close races and tight technical man eating hair pins
tricky straits wild life and the occasional alien runing out from behind arock the size of a house on to the course and off into a deep rocky canyon thats on your right that your not suppost to be thiking about while riding. hard core! Not crazy
This course will learn you .No matter how good you tink you
are. Crashing and 1200 doller helmets and Rubber suits will not win races here .Skill does Now I have to go no more talk Time to ride Homemade So. Cal Barrett. see you all at the hill On your boards hopefuly L8s

from the looks of those thangs,the helmet probabely will do more,tight fitting regular clothing should be fairly aerodynamic,you could tape up the cuffs. Leathers are more a matter of protection/abrasion resistance.

Aero Hemets vs Leathers.
Which one by itself will make you faster? By leathers, I mean well-fitting customs. I have found a Landingham helmet for 600 bones. I can get it, and some nice fitting, not custom leathers, or I can get the customs. I need to know from expirienced riders who have used on or the other, or both. Thanks.

The crazy thing about Frank's Hill, is ttat you don't even notice how crazy it is until you get better on it! I raced it in October, an flew down the silly thing. I went there with Rick, and beat myself up on it, thinking that I could just bomb it. I think when I raced, all I was thinking about was getting to the bottom, but when I went for training, I was thinking about the surface of the road, the turns, how good I thought I was, and wasn't looking at the WHOLE picture. I was concentrating on too many litte things, and wasn't thinking about the WHOLE thing. Beginners, beware, cockyness, and thinking too little (no pun intended) will get you hurt!

I must say that it was quite an enlightening four hours, indeed. There was much that I managed to learn about speedboarding, and that first right... I was about 2 inches from hugging boulders today. A great run, I must say. A beautiful run! A run like today is what causes people to stay happy for days... Weeks even.
I am a VERY content speedboarder at the moment.
Ride Hard and Stay Safe...

Barrett Junction

Herbn, Frank's hill (aka Barrett Junction) takes over two and a half minutes in a great tuck to bomb and has a couple of pretty wicked right handers (almost hairpins) that scrub a lot of speed. What's nice about it is that it's off of a main highway that you can take back up to the top so you don't end up driving up the course and running others riders off the road. You can see an ariel picture of the course at SkateRelated.com or go directly to the picture by clicking here. To understand the course, first note that the road that takes you up to the top is relatively wide and straight and is pictured below the actual race course. The start of the race is in the lower right hand corner just off the main highway. It begins with a sweeping left hander that takes you into the first hard right turn, followed by an even longer sweeping left hander that takes you into an even tighter right hander. After that you can stay tucked the rest of the way and pick your way through the catepillar tracks and the cracks and debris. This is NOT a walk in the park. There is a long straight away at the end of the run and a completely unmakeable left if don't hit the brakes after the finish line. This is where your ride to the top can wait for you. It's one big loop and 4 hours on that hill can be 4 very productive hours. The surface is so gnarly that I strongly suggest padded leathers. I went down TWICE on ONE run in practice with my heavy leathers, and saved my speedsuit for racing the next day.

So Herbn, Yes. You should be very jealous (as am I) because this is a nice long, semi-technical, semi-fast hill that teaches you survival techniques with various surfaces and turns thrown in. It's way cooler than any "one minute wonder" or straight hill.

Back in action

During the last five minutes of the last game of the season in my "old guys" soccer league I skied for header on a corner kick and came down awkwardly and screwed up my back. That was a couple days before the Kludy sessions down San Diego way and the bad news is that I missed a valuable bit of training with Kludy and Golter and Hardwick and others. The good news is that my back is finally good enough to skate again and I'm ready to start training again. The theme for 2001 is "technical baby" and I'll be working on my slides with Cliff Coleman up in Auburn in the next few weeks. I hope the invite is still open to skate with yall down south. DHX South Africa has a "make it or brake it" set of hairpins and not enough hill to recover from any mistakes. Barrett Junction will be a good warmup but doesn't have any really hard lefts to practice on. Whenever you guys are going out for a run, remember I could use the practice. A little "follow the leader" could be a great deal of help. Ready when you are.

p.s. Kludy, Glad I could be of help. This stuff is getting to be damn expensive. Perhaps some prize money could help to justify the cost?

SpeedBoarder... I am Reborn!

Maximum thx to Gary for my new T.V.S. speedboard... I have been riding it every day just to get the feel of what my new ride is going to be like from now on, and I am prepared to take it out for real now. It only wants to go fast... And that is what I plan to do with it. Kludy is right about the night and day difference of what bombing a hill is to a skateboarder. I would like to say that I have reached a new level (however a beginner I may be at this level) and must say that bombing hills is a soul experience. As I have heard a great man once say, "Bombing hills gives you more focus on everything you do in life." When you are pushing speeds that you aren't quite comfortable with, and MUST focus all of your energy on what you are doing in order to stay cool, you are playing the mindgame that is speedboarding. It is a mindgame, and I have become fascinated with the intense meditation that takes place when one becomes so focused on any given part of life that is happening at the moment... ie. SPEEDBOARDING!
