Jody, The board looks great! With your designs now matching your excellent craftsmanship, it looks like you'll have more people setting sail on the Landyachtz soon.

I can't tell from the photo, but it appears that the tail is bent down a little past level to take some steering out the rear. If it does, that's great, if not, just wedge it or leave it alone. Either way it's a winner. A low CG and no possibility for wheel bite is going to get you down the hill faster and safer. I like what you've done. Keep it up!

When in Co. look me up for riding, 12,000 ft mountain passes have a downside usually dropping some 4500 feet or more. Old highways with nothing but bikes to play catch up with. See you this spring @ all the races this snow bum can afford to make. McKendry Vail, Co. Bomb hills not each other.

I'm on my way back to Colorado this weekend after spending 2 months snowboarding and speedboarding in central Virgina. The roads in Va. and West Va. need to be checked by all ya'll's. This past week Doug from migration boards and Thomas (luge pilot) came to session a road just outside the ski resort Wintergreen. I wanted to thank you guys for coming out and for the shuttles up the hill.

New Landyachtz

Wow.

For sale? Makes me glad to have just liquidated the original DH with its unwelcome geometry variables.

I'm guessing Chaput will scoff at anything not using a drop-through that you can stand on (perhaps rightly so).

Still, this is certainly progress from our friends from the Great White North. Like the wheels and trucks as well, glad to move away from the "designed for Indys" downhill board. Hope they ship their completes this way.

Remember, I got my complete DH from them with 70 MM clear Kryptos, not exactly the downhiller's choice. They also shipped it with RIIs which as Shnitzel points out are the wrong truck for that design.

I think a drop-through design with a foot area over the front truck would have been an improvement. Still, this is progress. Let's hope they ship completes set up as shown in the picture.

Last note: remember, this commentary is coming from a guy whoe doesn't skate faster than he can run.

P.S. My ring and little fingers on the left hand still don't make a fist four months after my last serious crash on Halloween. Always opt for the break over the dislocation if given the choice by loan sharks et al.

76 mm Krypto Classics
On 2/13/2001 cheshirepus wrote in from (160.227.nnn.nnn)

I'm currently riding some 76mm Krypto Classics. I love 'em! They're fast as hell and give you a nice grip on the road. I notice that I can really feel what the wheels are doing underneath me and am pretty sure as to when they're going to break. One thing I have noticed though, is that I haven't been riding these wheels for too long, and they're showing some signs of wear that are concerning me a little. Over all though, I would definately recommend that you try 'em out if you're curious, you'll be glad you did.
Only thing I don't like is the bright orange colour.

Has anyone tried power paws at Barrett, any kind of the wheels? Or what about 76mm kryptos? I think I will be there this weekend so I want to try a few things out. I would like to see everyone out there ripping it up and having a good time, yes Chaput the snow man, it would be fun to have you too! I will yak at everyone later.

I've been watching this here in the shadows, hoping it would all blow over. I hate to see such a great site like this descend to the level of the majority of trash talking message boards that plague the internet. We're not little kids who have nothing better to do than spend all our time talking shit to eachother without ever having to meet one another face to face. We are damn near a family, my friends. We ride together, we race together, we compete with eachother, we look up to eachother, we make sure the other guy is riding safe, and hopefully, if we don't have a problem with who won the race, we can all get together later on and talk about how great it is to be so lucky to race one another.
You should see what I have to wear when I'm bombing with Hardwick, Kludy, Frank, or anybody else for that matter. If you saw me, you'd think I was Mad Max. I wear an old Shoei helmet, a leather jacket, and some $3.00 knee pads over a couple pair of old jeans. All this while I'm riding with guys wearing aero helmets, immaculate full-body leathers, and free shoes. I've no hang ups with them because they WORKED to get what they have. I'm just happy to be on the hill, honing my skills and having a good time with a couple of bros.

And that's MY two cents.

Rules rules rules

Well seeing that people can have a technical advantage if they use newer gear- and they can have a technical advantage if they have areo helmets, and they can have a technical advantage if they wear speed suits..... I'm with it for all the limitations to keep speedboarding pure. Who needs all of this expensive stuff that few people can afford?

My proposal is simple. We have two classes. A Black Knight class ( the advanced class ) you may use only a Black Knight clay wheeled skateboard (stock no modifications), no pads, no helmet- pre 1970 shoes, and the race venue will be a driveway.

Then we will have the classic class which is metal wheeled skates cut in half with a hacksaw nailed to a 2 x 4. Again no safety gear, and no entry fees either since that would limit the racers who were unable to afford it. No travel involved either each will race on terrain he likes so there is no home advantage. We will post the results in vitual format racing on the web. The race will not have a hill since some hills might be bigger than others so it will be on flat ground -we will limit it to a Single push start since we would not want to give an advantage to better athletes who actually might train- giving them an unfair advantage. The rider who can coast the furthest from a single push on flat ground wins.

You guys are too silly. I think I might not bother to go to Capetown.

Man it was CLOSE. So KLUDY just throw on your old bearings onto your worst wheels and go practise controlling yourself in water.

SU (because we don't use that word at my house...pipe down, put a sock in it, etc...)

I think your way off base on this one. A lack of quality roll models is one of the contributing factors to this whole trendy anarchy thing. And yes it is trendy. The bad boy image is just that, an image. It sells, that's why guys do it. It's whats expected. It is the easy thing to do. Blend in with the crowd dude... be one of the bad boys and no one will notice your differences.

Don't stand out... don't stand alone... be part of a gang... go ahead, your a bad dude! Don't dare to be different... be a big talking bad dude!

It takes a whole lot more guts to stand on what you believe in... especially when it goes against the amoral anything goes if it feels good do it mentality that is leading this great country down the fast track to destruction.

Rather than hiding behind an anonymous name with no e-mail address attached.

I personally don't give a big fat crap if you like the white helmet guy or not... 100% your business... but the guy is standing up for what he believes in.

What do you believe in? No rules? Live it on the edge? Die young and leave a good looking corpse? Well bad dude? What do you stand for? Being part of the crowd so no one notices that your different? Live fast live high die young?

We are all roll models whether we like it or not... someone is looking at how you live your life and they want to be just like you. That's a fact of life... someone WILL follow the example that your life leads. What type of an example will you be Mr. Shut up? Will you be one of the blend with the crowd bad boys? Or will you stand up for what is right?

I will now step down off of my soap box... HR

Chaput's Problem
On 2/13/2001 Sk8Carver wrote in from (165.121.nnn.nnn)

Mr. Chaput. Do you know what your biggest problem is? Illegitimi non carborundum! It means "Don't let the bastards get you down!" You let these wannabees and losers get to you. I haven't read a single post from anyone who has beat you and yet they seem to have you on the defensive. I go back in skateboarding longer than you can imagine and I knew you when you were a freestyle skater. Even back when you were a teenager you were pushing for organizers to standardize their rules and venues. Most of them were very short-sighted and didn't really have the best interest of the sport in mind. They were in for a quick buck and skateboarding folded as a result. You and I both know about skating's history and have learned from it. Most of these other knuckle-heads, full of attitude and short of wisdom will have to see the sport that they love die and go underground before they will see what is obvious to you and me. You have tough road ahead of you for several reasons. You are obviously intelligent, articulate and creative and you do nothing to hide it. You are supposed to play small so that others around you feel better. You are athletic and apparantly well-off but you are supposed to act cool and persecuted by the establishment. My god, you are the establishment. The biggest sin of all is that you been instantly successful. The prevailing attitude in skateboarding of any form requires that you pay your dues first. No one will give you credit for being truly talented when you use high tech equipment. You give them too many excuses for their own lackluster performance. The mere fact that you don't drink or do any drugs is enough to put some so called "core" skaters over the edge. Just how in the hell are you supposed to fit into a scene where more than half of the field would fail a drug test? On top of that you wear a white speedsuit. What are trying to be, Mr. Clean? Are you seriously trying to be a role model with ethics and values? Lord knows we don't need that. Don't you know that you should try to just do what everyone else is doing? Blend man, blend. Don't try to lead, just follow, it's safer down there. Seriously man, you have enough of what it takes to win because you are a true competitor and a winner. For what it's worth, us old guys are rooting for you and think that it is great to see you actively publishing your pursuits on the web. Seeing an old guy do weel gives us hope. Don't let the bastards get you down. That stuff about the meek inheriting the earth was garbage said so that suckers could feel all warm and fuzzy. Stick to your game plan, you'll end up on top. I've rambled on enough. Go Chris.

Standing Up
On 2/12/2001 Chris Chaput wrote in from (63.168.nnn.nnn)

From everything that I've heard about the DHX, it is a technical course that a speedsuit would do little help in. Since I'm a weak, inexperienced technical rider, it realistically shouldn't make a difference in the results one way or the other. It would help riders without fast gear more if they banned aero helmets. The truth is that riders who HAVE aero helmets LIKE aero helmets and would complain if a new rule banned them without explanation. In a contest of "who should we feel sorrier for", the guy who can't afford an aero helmet usually wins over the guy who paid a lot of money for his and has his sponsor's logos on it. As it turns out, it depends WHO you are and this means politics. Even though banning the aero helmets would help to "even" things out more than banning speedsuits, race organizers can't afford to have big name riders pull out of an event. Banning speedsuits does not solve any perceived inequalities in gear. They are throwing you a little bone and you're biting.

Sherlock, van Bommel, Dansie, Hardwick, Lehr, Kludy, Flindt, Golter, Lowery and many others use aero helmets. When I saw what people were using, I didn't whine, I decided to get an aero helmet instead of trying to get them banned. Biker Sherlock, John Dread, Rick Kludy, Cliff Coleman, many others and I wear speedsuits on occasion. I didn't invent them nor did I price them nor did I whine about others using them. I just went out and bought one instead of lobbying to get them banned. I got leathers when I found out that they were required. Again I didn't try to get everyone's leathers banned. As a matter of fact, I wore only leather at Mammoth, San Francisco, Ohio, Washington D.C. and at Barrett for qualifying. The ONE race that I exclusively wore a kevlar race suit and a speedsuit was Seattle. All of this was by choice, and EVERYONE was free to make the same choice if he wanted to. Red Bull had to make a tough choice in allowing some amateur riders to race without leathers, fortunately all went well. Not so for me. I was nailed from behind just after the finish line and slammed hard in kevlar/speedsuit combo. That was the only time that my speedsuit has hit the ground (it was leather at Barrett in practice, twice on one run).

Perhaps living in a highly litigious area like California makes people more cautious than usual but putting together a rule book that tells people what to expect is necessary to keep the lawyers away. Biker tells me stories about people bringing boards with 2 bolts on each truck, plastic races in the wheels, no helmets, no pads, etc. HELLO. People have DIED in this sport from head trauma while wearing helmets that were properly strapped. We can't afford NOT to have rules in place that attempt to keep riders safe. This not done to exclude those less fortunate. If you can't find a way to get the gear that you want, it doesn't mean that others are trying to exclude you. There has to be a place that you draw the line. With aero helmets, where do YOU draw that line? How about just a little aero? How about not aero at all? Skinny-aero okay, wide-aero bad? Who in the hell is going to play God and decide for us which helmets don't provide any advantages? The speed-skiers use a rule that limits the size to anything that can pass through a 40cm ring. Sounds good to me. These aren't spec races. Can you even imagine the can of worms that you would be opening if you held races where everyone had to ride the same gear? Okay, now imagine the same race and the gear that you have to ride is MINE. That would be "fair" wouldn't it? Everyone has the same gear, right?

Craig was right about the DHX not being clear. I cannot find ANY explanation, yet alone a vague one. My personal belief is that all equipment that isn't dangerous and doesn't fall outside the generally accepted definition of a skateboard (lean-to-steer, 4" wheel, 48" x 12" board and 12 lbs weight max's) should be allowed. I think that skateboarding would evolve faster without unneceassry rules that have more to do with style, attitude and opinions than with defining the rules of engagement. Speedboarding is racing, racing is competitive and competition is about bringing out the very best that one has to offer. Maybe your experience is different than mine but winning is more fun than losing. No one is bringing intentionally lousy gear to the race in order to "be fair". No one.

Hey, it's easy to poke fun at a guy in a speedsuit. It's easier to make up a bunch of crap and post it on the web than to know the truth (my wife cracked up when I showed her the one about marrying into money, I cracked up when I found others believing it). It's easier to criticize someone who appears to have a silver spoon in his mouth than to get your own damn spoon. It's easy to act like some kind of purist who only does this for fun, until race day when the disappointment of not advancing settles in. It's easy to talk about what you DON'T want. It's easy to bend over and take whatever an organizer gives you. It takes balls to go out on a limb and say what you DO stand for. Collectively, racers have the power to shape the rules which govern them. If you are NOT vocal about what you want, then you get what you get. It's okay for the rules to make sense. Really, it's okay.

I was in the US Post Office on Christmas Eve fulfilling an order of extremely low priced skate equipment for South Africans. The order changed over 7 times before shipping and called for custom made decks. I'm bringing even more product with me to help out more riders before the race. I'm doing what I can to help other riders skate faster. I have no interest whatsoever in trying to slow others down. Period.

well said.

every year rules change on the fly, this may not be "right", but its part of the game. if you plan on racing you need to deal with it, if you dont like it YOU CAN GO START YOUR OWN ORGANIZATION! the amount of time and sacrifices that go into putting on a race is HUGE, most riders have no idea how much time is spent.

i'll end this post with a quote that is also good advice. its from Gary Hardwick. "WAIT FOR CHANGES"
