Yeah, changing Randal bushings really changes the ride. I use Indy red bushings on my R2's and the difference is amazing!

thanks for the compliments chaps.

board is a 42 fibreflex cutaway (the original flexier version) 180 randal r-2's (as you can see), krypto route 70's (a bit coned and in need of replacing - i'm thinking some abec11 74mm 78a flywheels) and easy bollox bearings. since taking the piccie i've popped in some blue bones bushings and they've transformed the ride into another dimension.

A bit off-topic, but I just found a Mickey Munoz Arbor snowboard at the local used gear shop, got it tuned and waxed and the bindings on, so Friday it's out to surf some powder! I've wanted one of these always, the laminated wood top, no paint, looks just right. There's a common energy among biking, skateboarding, surfing, and snowboarding and it's where I feel most at home. If you have never got onto a snowboard, please do! I live where I do because there are mountains to climb, maybe climb all morning and get to the summit, look around at all the wilderness, snow slopes everywhere, then strap in, push off, drop into a huge bowl, the ridges almost curling over, almost breaking, carve a deep turn and throw a huge rooster tail of white cold smoke, and another, and a hundred more, finally running out of speed, stopping, falling flat back into the deep fluff, grinning into the sky.

Had a surf in a thunderstorm yesterday, lightening was flashing
out at sea and great booms of thunder were going off over our heads.
The ocean was warm. Then the sky opened up and it poured
buckets, which turned into hail. Waves were 5' backs, no wind.
Awsome..to see evidence of that which generated the swell was trippy.

WOW, after a holiday full of parties that go on till the sun rises and sets again, a whole bunch of skates at all hours in the morning and just about everything else that screws up a persons sleeping patterns, I woke up at 4 in the morning, completely awake, no reason to feel even slightly tired, I came up to read the ncdsa, and to see if I could catch any of the guys who I can never catch on Msn messenger, well an hour later the sun is starting to show it's presence, y'know that perfect and clear light that you only get in cape town on absolutely still summer mornings, my board just beckoned, I had too, I ran down stairs and got out the loosest setup I could find and put on the sliperiest wheels I had under 85a you know so it's just right, that you can carve hard and have just the right amount of slide, that you can slightly drift that tail end of your board while blasting through streets that are completely empty, y'know that absolutely perfect feeling you get when you are flying down an empty street with that cool air that you have been wishing for all summer long. Thats how it was with my hair blowing back behind me the cool crisp perfect morning light and air just pullineg me back to the top of hill with absolute ease, as I skated down I could hear all the dogs going nuts, I laughed to myself when I realised that they were barking with jealousy, then as I wallked back into my house I thought to myself how I could have gone out with my friends last night and only been arriving home now and how that would have wrecked this perfect morning, how that would have only made the morning I had been waiting for ALL SUMMER just another boiling hot day in Cape Towns Summer paradise.

howzit, my missouri bruddahs?

been in the water so much, haven't had time to ride my Interstate longskate (courtesy of the Purple Skunk). Soul is alive and well in the water. I got a killer ride on a long wave and dedicated it to Big MO and Columbia especially. the water's cold, the wind is fierce, and the rain don't stop, but it's all good. we've been blessed with some sweet waves.

MissouriMatt, plenty o' swell here, what we need is no storms! I know that hill VERY well (my wife graduated from the vet school and I usta like right on Williams St). You got soul AND balls brah!! :)

Ironically, I too just finished "Caught Inside". I know the spot he talks about that he calls the "Point". It's not really called the Point, and lotsa people surf there so it's not like a secret place or anything. Anyway, I've surfed there many times and let me tell ya, getting caught inside there really is a bad thing. Big monster waves that break and smash you down onto nasty reef rock with only a long lateral paddle to get safe. I had the scariest holddown of my life there. But it is an incredibly beautiful spot. Indescribable, really. "The Point" is all closed out now with the big winter swell.

Outstanding story, outstanding, good set ups as well.

I love my favourite parking building so much that yesterday
I started painting it in oils. I have some nice photos from
sessions up there to work from and the painting is working
out, I'm stoked, hope to catch the essence of that special place.

An interesting thing happened this Christmas

I work for myself, and every year I try to come up with some interesting and novel gifts for my best and biggest clients. They always get the same crap from everybody else; baskets full of food, wine, popcorn (what kind of gift is a bucketful of popcorn anyway?)

This year they got longboards.

Two of them received G&S Fibreflex 42” Cutaways with Randal II 150’s and Power Paw Aluminators.
One got a G&S Fibreflex 42” Cutaway with exkate Torsions and Power Paw Aluminators.
One received an Arbor 45” Bomber with Randal II 180’s and 65mm blue Krypto Classics One received a Soulcarver 42” cruiser with Seismics and old school 1980’s 65 mm kryptos from.

I hand delivered these boards to judge their reactions.

The first guy just sort of held it and ran his hand over the wood and began a slow, really detailed description of the wooden half-pipe that he and his brother had built in their backyard as kids. He assured me that I’d be surprised as to how good he was on a skateboard. He had some sort of look in his eyes.

The next one immediately launched into a story about his old schwinn beach cruiser that he had just pulled out of his parents garage and had begun to sand the rust off and clean up. He thought that this would go along with it nicely. He stood on the board in his office and did kickturns as he told me about the old bicycle. I noticed that he had that same sort of look in his eyes.

The next two had pretty much the same reaction; completely lit up faces, spun a wheel by hand, then dropped the boards on the floor and skated down the hallway through their offices. Again, that funny look.

The last guy is a finicky photographer and he said that he didn’t know how to ride that thing. He was not at all open to my suggestions that he could learn to ride that thing. He asked if he could send it to his younger brother back in Italy who is “crazy for these skateboards”. He always seems to have a crazy look in his eyes.

I kept thinking about that funny look. Most of these guys are pretty straight-laced businessman types, and every one of them had the same look about them. Maybe it was even more than just a funny look, maybe it was sort of this overall vibe that they were giving off. Wholly different behavior than what I usually see from them.

I realized that what I was seeing, was little bits of their actual souls coming out. Each one of these guys stopped in their tracks and let loose with something that they hadn’t thought about for a long time or did something that they hadn’t done in years by taking that brief ride down the hallway carpet. There’s been a lot to think about this last year, but I think that each of these guys was able to drift off for a while and connect with a few of the things that make up the always elusive soul. This all did wonders for my soul as well.

I don’t know what will happen with these boards. I hope that they will get ridden. I hope that the recipients will go out late at night and carve up a little slope somewhere. I hope that when they left the office that day, they put those boards down on the smooth, concrete in the parking structure and skated to their vehicles.

A Christmas story in 611 words or less.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Happy New Year!!!

That was my cue. I ran outside knowing that everyone would be someplace other than on the roads. Grabbed my Ed Economy Bank Rider and started carving up the 8 block long that I live on. It was all mine. No one else.
I could hear fireworks going off, people yelling, champain corks popping, as I cruised down the hill.
My wife told my and old Polish proverb is that whatever you do on New Years, will be the thing you do all year long. Hopefully they're right.

Anyone know of any quality 60's surf-style longboards outthere.
I want the vintage look, hopefully without the vintage price.
I've seen the Noll Street-Surfers, they look sweet, but some
feed-back on one would be great. I'm looking in the 4 foot +
size, preferably wood, no concave or kicktails. Any help?
Happy New Years to all, lets make it a good one. Kilo, since
you're catching waves for everyone, make mine a 3 min. tube!

Ah... surfing... Hey Kilo, if it's not too much trouble, could you catch a wave for a currently landlocked longboarder? Give my best to the seals!

Kilo Watt,
Good to know Columbia connection is in the water. I've been reading Caught Inside, getting a bit of an idea of what a year of surfing in Northern Cal would be like. Enjoy! I'm always honored if someone speaks to the ocean on my behalf. Hope the ride is sweet.

Just made my first longboard today. Came out sweet. Is this soul? Strickly, I assure you. 42" long, 34" wheel base, ample cut out, lots of room for Torsion 201's and 99.5mm xtreme SS without any risers, no wheel bite.

I'll bomb the hill behind the Vet school, heading down to the Mule Barn, with some toe clips and the big wheels, I'm off the road, over the curb and on the the grassy hill for a speed scrub before re-entry and hard carves to slow before the gravel parking lot. That always helps shake the surf jones. It might even push some long period swell your way.

Ride on Kilo Watt

Christmas Eve -

I have my kids in the garage. my Stepson is out in the street riding his soon to be replaced slalom "plank". The local kids come over and want to try an extra I keep on loan. They fight over it after riding the board. they dig the quick turns and glide the board has. One wants to borrow it for a few days. I let him. Only one thing to do. I go over to the other side of the garage and pull out some 1/4" 5 ply. Centerline 3 shapes , break out the electric saw and start cuttin. 30 minutes later they are ready to be sanded, drilled, gripped and setup by their NEW owners. The kids are stoked. Merry Christmas, boys.........

Well the h0dad doesnt buy Christmas, but goes through the motions
to keep family happy and belly distended. However, the day itself
ruled for it's vibe; peds were sparse and the h0dad felt less
self concious and more rippy. One of the highlights was taking
a 7-year old Taiwanese kid for his first ride on a skate, a
pintail. The kid was a sharp student and was well imprinted. I got
Waves of the World for xmas too, good karma man!
