The first run of production front Virages were finished this morning, team 'flow' stand by your bunks.
Tweaks include, 55 degree baseplate with built in riser (ie taller to allow for 70mm wheel to run with minimal risers), 'Virage' logo on the front face, a smooth rear and front face of the hanger to allow for the excellent 'Eliminator' bushings from Venom, which have a moulded divot to allow for spherical bearings. The rear of the kingpin goes through maximum press fit hole in the base plate, where the rear face has been machined to mimic the shape of the rear truck baseplate....mmmm designer....bling.
These trucks use an imperial spherical bearing for exact fit on the grade 8(Khiro) kingpin, and fit over the kingpin without needing to remove it. We also have produced 5 degree and 3 degree angled risers which are designed to not only complement the trucks but also match other trucks neatly. Two of the holes (tall end) are elongated slightly to allow for bolts to pass without undue bending, if at all.
Final picture and prices on Sunday. Click here for link

We have a new bag out on the market, "The Fish."
"The Fish" accomodates a 48" speedboard (or more) with plenty of storage, or you can stash your slalom and park longboards in it, flip up our new partition and stash your helmet in a padded compartment large enough to handle a full-face! There's plenty of room for pads and a backpack feature that you can unclip and conceal to prevent snaggage when you check it as luggage or just carry it like a machine-gun bag with the side handle.
Solid construction, YKK zippers...built to last and no other bags even comes close in comparision. $120 dollars...

Small clarification and info

Thanks for the messages and enquiries. For clarification the price below is for CNC Hanger, Baseplate, standard kingpin and pivot cup.
You need to choose which axle option you want and those are extra. Sourcing a standard 60mm M8 bolt (high tensile) in the US is cheaper than the same in the UK. However we do offer a longer bolt that we cut down to maximise the smooth section and reduce the threaded section to mimic closely the machined axles we offer. This is a great mid-way solution. The super -dooper machined axles have finer tolerances, and feature left handed and right handed threads, and nut to suit. Also they include the integrated speed ring for superior fit and reduce slop accordingly.
The whole ethos of the Virage was to provide a mix of off the shelf hardware (Khiro Grade 8 kingpin and pivot) with CNC machined quality and accuracy, alignment and stiffness. We offer a choice of finishes, so that entry costs are minimised as far as CNC'ing prices can allow. But what we do offer is that low (ish) entry point to top end feel, as far is possible. We did consider using screw in axles, but felt that after testing the advantages of a totally smooth axle for bearings and the accuracy of machined integrated hanger and axle speed rings was appreciable, noticeable and translated to increased performance. It is incredible when you fit the wheels how quietely and smoothly they spin and run. Silence is golden...or at least a nice shiny silver.
Thanks again for the interest. Michael

The production Virage rear trucks will be ready March 14th, or before. We have a 'microsite' up at www.viragetrucks.com Click here for link where all the specifications and prices and ordering info is. Any questions, please email me. As these are CNC'd we do need to order in advance so if you want trucks by that date then we need pre-orders to add to the current run. If you want to wait then availability will , of course, depend on orders and turnaround.
The rear truck starts at a cut down, 'raw' cnc version for £87/$125/150Euro with choice of axles.
Hope you like!

I'm just putting together pricing options on the Virages, and the plan is to offer a 'Raw' version where racers can either order off the shelf axles, custom axles, or source their own in their own country.
One thing that can't change is the method of manufacture. Any producer of high end trucks has material costs and machine costs. So the Virage will never be a cheap option. Sitting here with a calculator it is looking likely that US prices would be comparable to their domestic produced high end trucks, and for Europe and the UK the price would be less.
However, as performance is key to any truck there will be racers who consider the price 'reasonable' and like the performance characteristics these offer.
For us in the UK dollar prices are hurting, so sourcing a domestic product makes sense. Whilst a dollar can buy more from the UK than in the past machining/manufacturing/staff/material costs do remain higher than in the US.
Mind you, I guess Aston Martins are still coveted, or a Jag. Where a Corvette may fit the bill for some people.
Its horses for courses. Personally I feel the gap for mid range performance trucks can be filled with Skennets/Skandals and the like, and the Virages will fit in at a level where racers are looking to have a performance truck with special features that they like.
....And then we will be beaten by a talented kid on Trackers!

After watching these Virage trucks develop, I'm mightily impressed. No dissin' Radikal nor GOG, but in my mind, the Airflow/Turner/Asphalt Playground trucks were better suited to the needs (not wants, tho) of most Slalom racers, because SIMPLICITY equals a Price (sorry Paul) that your weekend warrior can afford. Virage has all the goodies you NEED, at the price you can Afford. Makes your WANTS and NEEDS kinda merge for a moment, which may actually be the start to finding ZEN? No, not that deep, but... ;-)
Yeah so, I'm stoked on these!
[Now, just gotta find someone who can make an up-to-date Proccer (or Lazer), with better baseplates and axles for those sub-6-meter courses.]

The production version of the Virage rear truck is nearly with us.
These pictures are of the 'RAW' version, where the machining lines have been used as a 'feature'. You'll be able to order them with the sandblast matt finish too, at extra cost. Anodizing will be available in a few weeks.
Steering angle is 80 degrees, or rather, '10'...
Fixed kingpin. NO spherical bearings. 8mm axles.
The bearings are held securely by inbuilt speedrings on axle and hanger. The axles have left-hand and right-hand threads, so any tendency to loosen is transposed on the relevant axle towards tightening. The main advantage of this axle system is the way the bearings are held on pure axle, and because the speedrings are integrated everything fits 'just right'.
The current state-of-the-art slalom decks have the rear truck positioned under the kick/stomp pad type rear, which, if you don’t use an angle riser would tilt these by the corresponding distance backwards. Using these shallow angles allows racers to use less risers or riser combinations, so giving a stiffer, more accurate rear turning platform.
Front trucks are in development...

The culmination of 40 years of recreational riding yields this riding design for flats and downhill. If there was a better intro deck to downhill riding for beginners, I'd like to see it. I'm talking green green beginners. After teaching beginning skateboarders for over 20 years, every beginner has loved an easy turning board with easy foot placement. The instant turning with control earmarks this design with emphasis, FLAT IS BACK.
Great feedback from beginner slalomers using this deck for them to get the feel by moving slower with more turning control and positive foot placement for more confidence by stabilizing the board easier.
From my personal experience using it as long distance switch..pump..carve and push on flats, the spacious foot area allows multiple foot placement positions for ease of muscle push and rest rotation, the larger wheels on back provides a front forward lean for an aggressive positioning of body to go long distances, front truck radded for optimum turning (potential 2-foot turning radius), rear truck de-radded for rear foot postioning on downhill runs for stability, no kick tail because this board is designed for TRANSPORTATION, LONG DISTANCE RIDING AND DOWNHILL(Max 40mph) and 36" length to fit easily in overhead storage on planes. Also a great boardwalk beginner cruiser.
The simplicity of the deck makes it very easy to maintain. Free of all gadgetry and reduced to the original working parts of a basic skateboard. Maintenance can be performed with a standard skateboard T-wrench.
Tested Trucks: Bennett Vectors - Front(1/2" radded) and back (1/2" de-radded)
Original (front) and Seismic Rear (interesting ride!)
Tracker Axis - Front(1/2" radded) and back (1/2" de-radded)
Wheels 71mm rears and 62mm front work great. Gators 84A, Avillas, and Gumballs all aimed for smooth boardwalk cruising.
(1/2" de-radded)br>

Hey Michael, Thanks for the info, good to know. I hadn't thought about the predominance of kicktails and direct or parallel riser mounting of the rear truck, that's a good idea and I agree, putting 2 or 3 "soft" urethane wedge risers under one's rear truck to make the turning angle correct is definately sub-optimal to say the least. Good idea. Thanks -Paul

Width is standard 102mm including machined speedring. With wider axles and option of 122mm or 112mm.
Angles. Front is 45 degrees. Rear is 80 degrees 0r 10, depends which way you measure. (sounds steep, but of course you can wedge, and actually is around what many are tipping their Gog adjustable to, or their Skandals). Initial testing shows that the truck is both reasonable weight, but stiff, saving the Jenga arrangement of pads on the rear that many people have. Also, bear in mind many racers are using decks with rear kicks, so with this arrangement the 80 degree is lessened by the angle at which your rear is placed under that upturn, but without using a complicated arrangement of risers where a lack of strength can creep in. And if you have an inbuilt rear riser deck the 80 works well as is.
The front may indeed have a spherical hangar, (I know I said no sphricals, but Ive managed to source some nice interesting ones I'm dying to try)...this is to be decided and worked on. But looking how Splitfires have been configured there may be advantages to not doing that on the rear. Again, testing is needed. Its all about real world feel and performance of course. And thats the fun part at present.
The hole on the end of the rear baseplate is to enable the pivot to be poked out for inspection/replacement. There is a silmiar one on the front underside.
The axle arrangement is working well, on test versions. It is a clever combination of using precise in built speedwasher on the hangar, and also under the head of the bolt, 8mm axles and spacers that mean rotation of the axle is highly negligible. Even so, by having reverse thread on the appropriate axles would lead to any rotation from wheels to translate to a tightening motion, which would of course be limited by the wheel bearings and spacer, so as not to actually loosen at any stage. The testing stage is to judge how the axle shaft wears, but again, this use of precise components is tending to no slop at all. Of course, everything is a compromise of some sort, but the length of the axle hole does lead to no slop there either.
As for price. Well until final specs are decided I cant say. But the pound is low right now. It was never intended to produce a cheap truck, but a nice one.

Hey Micheal(I'm assuming), I did'nt see any specs as far as hanger width(s) or anything else or good direct side view photos on the www.viragetrucks.com website.
That rear truck looks like it has zero or nearly zero turning angle from the pictures. That seems like over-kill to me, but maybe that's just me. My all time favorite rear truck for tight and hybrid has been the Asphalt Playground Splitfire "Phase I" with the Tracker RT-X baseplate with about 5 deg neg wedging just as a point of reference.
The front truck looks like it will behave a lot like the "Phase II" Asphalt Playground Splitfire with the Randall baseplate. That to me was a good truck for big open courses but I could never make it turn quick enough for tight slalom or even medium hybrid courses and I went back to a rebuilt machined Tracker RT-X in front after that. I would bet that's one reason why GOG built a similar configured spherical bearing front truck.
I'm also curious about the axle configuration, it's interesting reversing the normal direction, I'd be a little worried about having some movement of the axle in the hanger due to small amounts of play and would think that a really solid fit of the axle with the hex head in the hanger and the free threaded end and locknuts outside might be more consistently secure.
Other than axle configuration and geometry, the construction/machining looks top rate to me and the overall design seems good. Any plans in later models for a kingpin hanger spherical bearing interface? Thanks -Paul
