Gravity Racing Returns to Bonelli Park!!! *LINK*

Posted By: Marcus Rietema
Date: 11/11/04, 12: 24 a.m.

The IGSA is very excited to announce that we will be bringing gravity racing back to Frank G. Bonelli Park. Bonelli Park is located in San Dimas, California approximately 30 miles East of downtown Los Angeles. Many of yesterdays and todays top racers have competed in Bonelli Park events and the IGSA is very pleased to be able to continue the tradition. On January 16, 2005, the IGSA will begin holding regularly scheduled events there.

The .6 mile course is very wide and speeds in excess of 60mph are possible. This width will allow multiple course configurations and two distinctly different finish lines. The traditional course is flat out to the finish and requires less technical skill. Drafting is the key on this course that makes a perfect Regional venue. The alternate, technical finish will require racers to brake heavily from top speed to negotiate a tight 90 degree corner before the finish straightaway. A slalom course will also be available.

Bonelli Park has large, beautiful grass lawns everywhere. Permanent restroom facilities are located close to the finish line. Plenty of paved parking is available. The park also has camping and rv hookups, hot tubs, miles of mountain bike and equestrian trails, Raging Waters water park and Puddingstone Lake for boating and fishing.

Roger Hickey started the tradition of the Bonelli Park races back in 1993 when the Federation of International Gravity Racing (FIGR) began holding regular races for Hickey's Gravity Formula 1 cars. Eventually Hickey and Perry Fisser began racing their street luges and stand up boards and Dwight Garland rode his gravity bike. The races continued to grow as more and more new racers entered the sport and old school riders came out of the woodwork.

By 1995 the races were huge with riders like Lee Dansie coming out from Seattle and Beagle Jarvis from New York. Bonelli is where we first saw riders like Tom Mason, Biker Sherlock, Sean Mallard, Pam Zoolalian and many, many more. Old school riders like Bob Ozman and Darren Lott were regulars at the Bonelli Park races.

Back in those days it was all about fun. Our goal is to recapture the spirit of those early years and hopefully bring many new racers into the sport. Entry fees will be kept low and we will experiment with different ideas and innovations throughout the year.

Originally we had planned to hold our first event at Bonelli this month but unfortunately there were a few delays in finalizing the permits. We will be well prepared and ready to go January 16th. Detailed information will be available at gravity-sports.com soon. I want to thank Bob Ozman for all his hard work, perseverance and effort to bring gravity racing back to Bonelli Park! It's going to be great!

How do you make rain wheels, and can they be used safely on dry pavement?

We lost a street luger in the past week.He was a beginner who thought to lightly about this sport.Like any gravity sport the appeal is the danger. So to everyone we have lost one of our own, be carefull and stay safe.

Hey hc,
I got the Viking's from a kind skater on this forum. Yeah, I know Xtreme makes some grooved wheels but that company doesn't seem to be around any more and/or their wheels seem to be out of stock. I was glad to be able to get this 76 mm wheels used. They work better than I expected on the dry so I hope to use them in steep gradient situations where I want to carve things up and still have max. grip.

Do you have any ideas for getting the bearings out of the metal hubs?

thanks

bebco, if you searching for history on streetluge.
search, roger hickey, sam puccio, signal hill, etc.
It started by in the 70's. You can do the math to figure out how old the pioneers are.

Also check out hughR's skatecar section and my luge page.
There is probable some article on the web regarding streetluge history somewhere.

airin, where did you get those vikings?
x-treme wheelz have a grooved model, but I think grooves are pointless given the small contact patch of skate wheels.

I'm running some rubber wheels with metal hubs as my 'rain wheels' on my longboard. These street luge wheels are working really well for slow speed carving in the dry on steep slopes and for rain riding on moderate slopes. However, they still slip a bit when carving in the rain on steep grades or at higher speeds.

I have two questions about these wheels. Firstly, how can you possibly remove the bearings from a metal hubbed wheel? When I wanted to clean the bearings yesterday after a rain riding session they felt like they were practically 'welded' into the metal hub! Nothing would budge them. Is there a special technique for removing bearings from this type of wheel?

Secondly, the smooth rubber 76mm Viking wheel does slide more in the rain than I expected. I am wondering if the grip on wet surfacer would improve if the wheel was grooved giving it some 'thread' and thus allowing water to funnel off so as to reduce any hydroplaning.

I'm hoping that some of you out there with some experience runing rubber wheels can help me out here. I know that lugers tend to use this type wheel for their sport hence my posting under this heading.

thanks,

Becbo, scroll down a bit further.... JL was just referring to a post before that,as I was... The "how old" question isn't fair, btw. It's a matter of how long a person has been at this sort of thing,or maybe who did what when (not that too many of us thought to document our riding,we just went out and Rode),but Age isn't a matter, until you're old enough to realize you might be going too fast.
