venting

I believe Fadell switched from Vents to something smaller, either Avs or ZZ's for his 2nd place run....he said the vents were too fast to reel in on that hill

On 9/10/2006 WAX wrote in from United States  (67.176.nnn.nnn)

Steve...the question was about Speed Vents for downhill.....I suggested he ask Rob or Rick..2 fast downhillers that have ridden everything, and dont play lapdog to any wheel manafactures..
and for your information, according to Kenny he was approached by Chaput to ride for him, just like Jason and other colorado racers were approaced to do some testing on some of the protos and extremeny high priced, hyped enormous wheels...
and as I recall from memory...at another event you werent even at (Nationals) Jason won on Zags, Fadell took 2nd on Vents and the MoMos didnt even make the round of 4...gumballs werent even close to the podium...
get a clue.... and yes, when CC tries to use any post on the wheel forum as an advert, I may possibly counter...this is not the vendors forum!

redundant posts
On 9/10/2006 Steve Collins wrote in from United States  (68.105.nnn.nnn)

Wax, maybe you should just take out an ad on ncdsa that says "I'm against Chaput and anything by Abec-11. If you are reading anything about Chaput, Abec-11 or it's spin offs, please assume that I will come out in opposition". It would be a lot more efficient for all of us that way B)

Remember also that the question in the post that started this was about using Speed Vents as downhill wheels, not GS. I think it is safe to assume that Speed Vents are a superior GS wheel to Gumballs, partly due to the lip. My feeling is that Gumballs would be better for the scruffy downhill situation described in the original post.

BTW, my understanding is that Mollica came to Chris asking for sponsorship, not the other way around.

Chris's latest rantings
On 9/10/2006 WAX wrote in from United States  (67.176.nnn.nnn)

Bara
I agree with you, it is the rider, Kenny won most of his big ones on Avalons in the past, and Jason won everyting in the past up till this year on Manx and 3dm...Luca doesnt ride abec 11 wheels(and I know many racers on all wheels still want to catch him)...mabye Jason and Kenny are winning on those wheels because of sponsorship? with top racers in any racing game where skill is paramont wheels choice comes down to backing, and to secure their loyalty CC is hooking up these guys, they are testing his new stuff and he seems to claim that its the urethane doing the work...

like I suggested to Thomas.....get ahold of non sponsored riders that are fast, and just love to skateboard...Like Kludy and Rob Mckendry...they will feed you the real story on the vents speed....

I run them for downhill, and have taken them over 50mph many times and they haul ass! if you are racing someone on a course that has a mellow top, you pull away quickly and they still haul ass on steep grades, i noticed no difference in top end speed from any other wheel but the acceleration is insane! they grip like mad too, and stick many turns that you would drift. but when you have to drift, they do it nicely.

chunking
On 9/10/2006 cam wrote in from Australia  (203.164.nnn.nnn)

do speed vents, avilas, hotspots, bigzags, pink gumballs, gumballs, grippins or any other similiar slalom style wheel chunk. if so which wheel is the worse for chunking, how can i avoid chunking, and does chunking affect the lifespan of the wheel or its performance??? i had zigzags 80a and the outer flexible lip split of the wheel does anyone know how i can fix this seeing as they cost me $100 australian.
thanks

geez CC.....i dont suppose those posted results would have anything to do with the fact that you have two world champs and a long time pro in the mix, aye?....

No slight against your wheels, i think they're great....but those results are probably more attributed to the riders, no?

Did somebody say GS?
On 9/8/2006 Chris Chaput wrote in from United States  (66.116.nnn.nnn)

Smaller hubs make for faster, smoother, and stickier slalom wheels.

Golden GS Wheels:

1st GS World Championships, Jason Mitchell - ZigZags and Manx
1st GS US Nationals, Jason Mitchell - ZigZags and Manx
1st GS Hood River, Jason Mitchell - ZigZags and Manx
1st GS Pump Station Crossover - Chris Chaput - MegaZags (Momo's)
1st Indian School Ditch GS, Kenny Mollica - Pink BigZigs
1st GS Pump Station January - Chris Chaput - BigZigs
1st GS Texas Cold Fusion - Chris Chaput - BigZigs
1st GS Pump Station December 2005 - Chris Chaput - BigZigs

All of these results came before the release of Lemon/Lime BigZigs and Sublimes. We test, then win, then release. Wanna talk about Tight and Hybrid next?

Speed Vents
On 9/8/2006 WAX wrote in from United States  (67.176.nnn.nnn)

ask Rob McKendry, or Kludy...they both ride them...

For big fast GS they haul ass, I was part of a wheel test with some of the fastest slalom racers on the planet last weekend, and the consensus was they rock....even tried them against some big, made for down the line courses like Pump Station wheels, and in a GS where pumping and agility are key the vents were the key wheel....
I have a set on my topmount, and have done some 40 ish, fairly straight line and they haul ass, and when I throw my weight around they stick well....

re: SpeedVents

TG: Gumballs are the perfect wheel for the conditions you describe. SpeedVents would probably be good as well but the hub is a litle larger and the lip a little thinner which might be troublesome in the adverse conditions. Gumballs would probably be perfect, 75a, or even the 77a reflex version.

i think they will grip like mad, but much sliding on them and they'll be messed up. that's the impression i get from their shape. consider those new abec 11 76mm big zigs. i'll be trying some vents within a week so i'll let you know 4 sure then.

Speed Vents
On 9/8/2006 Thomas Groover wrote in from United States  (152.163.nnn.nnn)

Can anyone who is riding Speed Vents tell me how their overall performance is? I would like to get a set of super-grippy wheels for my speedboard to take down some of these seriously neglected backroads in Alabama- definitely thinking of 75a. I have a set of 75a Exkate M-80s on it right now. Feels more like 80a, especially when I hit some rough asphault. M-80s are amazing smooth drifting wheels on smooth pavement but were definitely not designed for adverse riding conditions. How do Speed Vents compare to Flywheels on grip, speed, and control? I need a wheel that can really GRIP with a lot of speed- There are some monster hills out here that I don't even want to consider having a wheel that'll judder out unpredictably and throw my center off. Any feedback on these wheels or any comparisons anyone has will be greatly appreciated.

Big wheels
On 9/6/2006 herbn wrote in from United States  (64.12.nnn.nnn)

hhmmmm? i guess it takes a real long steep hill to make the bigger wheels work(superior)maybe a flat area in the middle to use the greater momentum of big heavy wheels. AT what point to the big wheels kick ass, maybe it's a matter of weight, you have to have a certain amount of weight to overcome any added wind resistances from being higher, or the frontal area of the wheels.

dillon, pros are racing on anything fron 76mm to 90mm. i have 90 (more like 85 now) flys on my evo becuase i like the security of big wheels on crappy roads. however, now that i've found some killer smooth roads and am riding in the 50 mph range, i'm gunna get some SMALLER wheels- maybe speed vents. the guys i ride with who have 76ish always pull away from me and my big wheels DO NOT eventually catch up! so i'd say stick with 76-80mm wheels and instead PRACTICE YOUR TUCK!

Wheel size for speed
On 9/2/2006 Dillon wrote in from United States  (24.119.nnn.nnn)

With all the years of experience evident in the last couple of pages worth of posts, could somebody please field this question?! I am currently bombing/carving up hills on a Landyachtz Evo with RII 180's and Abec11 Gumballs. I have gotten all the speed out of the Gummies that I can, short of being towed downhill by a car! I am curious about jumping up to 83 or 90mm Flywheels. With all other factors remaining the same(hill size, weather, etc.)will the larger wheels make a truly noticeable difference in my speed or must I find a steeper hill to gain a few more mph?

S9 wheels
On 9/2/2006 WAX wrote in from United States  (67.176.nnn.nnn)

Herb
like I said, the ones to get are the clear/white ones that look like the same thane as the GOS wheels...
remember, a large number of S9 and gravity boards go to chain stores, and its not cost effective to loose money on higher priced wheels going on completes to Zumies and Pac Sun....90 percent of the boards sold there probably are never really ridden hard, just look around any college campus..hundreds of Longboarders, while only a few really know how to ride....
but the GOS and Top Shelf wheels are a huge improvement on what you have! How many serious skaters buy completes? I cant remember ever buying one myself.....althought the Platinum series S9 decks come with Randals and the better wheels!

i have some red sector wheels that chunked real bad, and half a set of yellows that broke up under a young kid,a new skater, that couldn't possibly stress them very much.

S9 wheels
On 9/2/2006 WAX wrote in from United States  (67.176.nnn.nnn)

Herb

the 75 formula that is the clear/white formulas shared with the GOS are awesome, but the yellow ones are too soft/rebounding to slide...I have been running some of the whites hard for over a year on my cruising/carving board and they have been awesome....

as for the guy who posted the Seismic link..AWESOME...the seismic Hot Spots and Speed Vents are my favorite slalom wheels now, ride great and wear even better

suggestions
On 9/2/2006 herbn wrote in from United States  (64.12.nnn.nnn)

looks like people try to keep their suggestions unbiased, not reccommending a specific company..but. i have one ,you could call it a negative reccomendation, don't get any new 75a sector nine wheels, the 78a are probabely cool, but the i've seen a few sets of 75a's chunk big time,a set of yellow 75a's were split, half of the wheels chuncked, the other two were ok. Sector wheels should run cheaper than abec 11,just don't go with those softer ones. I think they'll be cool on the wuarentee issue, but sending them back could be a hassle. On abec 11's selections, wheel choices are very varied, it depends on how you want your board to ride, a big board like 60 inches of anything, would have me looking for a smaller wheel 70mm,flashbacks should be cheaper(i don't really know why) than grippins,or zig's. Flashbacks stick out a bit more, with a wide truck this might rub less. I like grippins, pick your durometer by how smooth the streets are,75a for junk 78a or 81a for mostly smooth 84a for smooth. Also a big 60 inch board should absorb a lot of vibration, which means your wheels don't need to be all that soft, unless you like a really silky smooth ride,i can double back on my reccomendations by qualifying every single suggestion with, "what you want" which is the real bottom line.

wheel recommendations?
On 8/31/2006 Josh wrote in from United States  (128.220.nnn.nnn)

Hi all-

I'm in the market for a new set of wheels, but I don't know much about what to get. I ride a 60" Rhyn Noll Streetsurfer, a heavy board, with Randal II 180s and Swiss Bones Ceramic bearings. I mainly use the board for light cruising and carving, but occasionally I bomb hills on this thing. I never slide it; I figure it's too damn big...though sometimes when I'm carving at around 25-30 mph I can feel the tail end pushing out a few inches, particularly on the poorly paved roads around where I live. I'm not interested in powersliding, though I don't mind the slight sliding I get now.

I currently ride Gravity 80a 73mm (not sure the exact model).

What do you recommend that would maximize the performance of this board? What are the basic tradeoffs in terms of wheel durometer/diameter, particularly in terms of speed/stability? Thanks!

power paw
On 8/30/2006 dt wrote in from United States  (68.5.nnn.nnn)

now thats a name that makes me shudder and hurl.

i was night skating GMR a few weeks ago and had a 65mm 74a pp puke on me while sliding through towers at 30mph. fortunatly i was doing a coleman and just slid to a stop. i figured my axle nut had shot off, but my builtins and nut was intact. the wheel simply puked itself away. i didnt want to walk, so i rode the last mile and a half on three wheels and a pair of builtins. as i slid through marbles the nut gave way and i lost the bearings and had to finish out on my axle. this sucked but it looked cool everytime i did a slide. my friends thought i just had really dirty bearings as i came around the last corner they didnt realize the loud scraping noise was my axle, until i threw down my final slide spraying the road with sparks!

i dont trust power paws. any of them. the aluminators looked real cool but several of those sets that came from a ""bad batch"" or something delamed on Gary and Manu too.

great wheels for teaching first timers how to carve on small hills.

btw, thanks again for those wheels Cliff, they were well used by many a newbie these past 6 years!!!!!

Wheels for both decks?
On 8/30/2006 askdefj wrote in from United States  (66.159.nnn.nnn)

Hello,
Just got my Insect Cutaway about a week ago.. and just ordered a comet air deck. This will be my 2nd deck..

I'm looking to get sliding wheels.. But I was wondering If I could get wheels that would be ok to switch to my insect board once in awhile. I was thinking about the No Skoolz but I was wondering, would 60mm feel too small to switch to my Insect Cutaway? I'd like to be able to use the wheels for both decks... if it's possible?

BTW.. I do already have 75A flashbacks on my insect. I just wanted some wheels that'd be ok to use on it once in a while.

Thanks
John

Coned or not
On 8/28/2006 PSR wrote in from United States  (69.160.nnn.nnn)

My Manx wheels were not coned. Many of my Avalons now are, and do seem to be stickier than when new. However, unless I've picked entirely the wrong duro (like 6-8 pts. higher) of Avalon, or they've been trimmed to under 42+- mm wide, Avalons have had the most predictable grip save for Roadie Racers (which don't grip as well, but like a good Hoosier Bias-ply, TELL ya about the traction available) of any wheel I'd been on. I'm still sorting out Grippins and Zig Zags, though I'm comfy on either. Adam prefers Zigs, but won't even run Grippins, and still has Avalons as backup for when (if) he's on a racing hill burlier than he trains on (sorry 66,we should've been in Georgia!). So far, no racing hill has been steep or demanding for him, unless it's Too Flat. And he hasn't even picked one or the other company as an official sponsor. That to me says that the Avalon may be dated, but not out-of-contention yet. Adam did win or place well more often on Zig Zags this season, but he used them more, too. In training, it's a few hundredths of a second in favor of Zig Zigs. I let him pick on Race Day...
Whatever is with my Manx's, it seemed to appear after I had used them at Morro Bay. The Gumballs and Avalons I used there have been fine(all still in use), so I'm guessing it's either something to do with the batch that my Manx came from, or the combo of wheel shape and choice of thane in them. Since they work for some very good racers, I'm not going to speculate that the wheel design is all that wrong, but will surmise that the formula of thane IS crucial to that wheel shape. I'm just not willing to Race on these myself. Cruise, yeah, but no pushing the envelope.

Pre-Coned wheels.. That's almost an abuse of a belt sander. However, I'll see if I can't program a CNC Lathe to shave a nice conical ellipse on my next set of Speed Vents or Gumballs. What's an education worth if you can't better your hobbies with it?
