Thanks to Dan Geismer for hooking me up with wheels. the red/white combo did it again for me, helping me to the podium. I very narrowly beat bobby jimmy in the semi finals, we both were riding the red/white vent combo. mayblr if he was'nt puking in his helmet it could have been a speed vent 1st and 2nd. but for now, its a 3rd and 5th place finish for the 'vents. great wheels! thanx again dan!

venting

Just had a great weekend racing the vents in NM, they is fast control good stuff i had know problem keeping up with everybody but Ricker, Price, and the Rogers brothers. I was really hung over, puking and stuff...and those guys are fast.

Speed Vents

I definitely agree about the 75a speed vents being able to hold speed through a turn. I actually bought a set of these to take down some very harsh roads in the mountains of Alabama. For downhill speed, these are surprisingly fast. As for controling speed, I can't carve it out of these wheels even at 75a. They're literally too fast for the intended application. Vents have a snappy, fluid feel and can cut some sharp lines, surprisingly smooth drifting ability, and a vibration free ride. Except for the speed, it almost feels as if the hub is not there. I imagine we will be seeing more of these in DH and GS in the near future.

Speed Vents

We've been selling quite a few of these wheels, and the current/latest batches seem to have better tolerances (cores, bearing seats, etc). I'm running the red/75a 'Vents on one of my setups, and I'm really pleased by how well they hold their speed through corners.

DAN....UNC is in full force...there is now a Slalom Racing team that is part of the UNC longboard club (school funded even).. I run cones on our on campus tight course a few nights a week with them..there is talk of a slalom race and longboardercross style longboard race...ill let you know when...
as for DH sites out there...not really...try yr road into milliken...fast as hell, but you gotta be ready for the kink at the bottom of the hill....if you dont unweight you are f#@!ed....been running the hills between horsetooth and the entrance to Lowrie st park and bombing the hills of the resivoir lately...if you are going to put on a race you should go to a few first to see how its done...

Speed Vents

Dan...that was the first run of vents,,,the factory had a problem with the molds, they have been fixed, and the last 3 sets I have gotten have been well balanced. All of the first runs that have been a problem have been replaced by Seismic, so this is now a non issue

Testing 101

I'm not sure what you're getting at Ricker. I rode Biltin Bearings in big Retro prototype wheels on big prototype Liquid Trucks and a big prototype Big Red X drop-foot deck. These are all products of my own design, being tested out in real world conditions. What better place is there to test out new equipment?

The drop-foot box concept only works for mongo pushers, and the design was banned at a recent race in Canada. The 6 wheeler was also banned at Maryhill, so I doubt that I'll be selling many race boards that are banned from racing. I've raced on my Big Red X at Hot Heels in Austria, Switzerland, Scotland, France, Germany, Montreal, the Sandia Challenge, and even won on it at the DHX in South Africa, Red Bull's Skid Road in Seattle, Danger Bay in Vancouver, the Sullivan Challenge in Kimberley, Madison County NY, the DC Downhill, the GMR Outlaw, Barrett Junction, the Pump Station Crossover...

It's not as if it sits in the corner and gets ignored. It's proven itself to be a great weapon of choice, but there's always an opportunity to try new things in the quest to go faster on a skateboard. Before I bring something to the marketplace, I think that it's a good idea rocket it down a hill full throttle and see how she handles.

Racing my own stuff...

I know this is a wheel forum but Chris, why don't you race your BIG RED X at downhill events? I haven't ever seen your custom DH board with the "drop box" anywhere for sale. Also at DB5 and Maryhill you didn't race any of your production wheels. I did though. Thanks

1st Slalom specific wheel....What would you get?

I'm going to purchase my first set of slalom wheels. I know there are a lot of variables in choosing a wheel for racing. But for know I just want something I can refine my technique, and push, I'm not thinking about actually entering a race....yet! I'm leaning toward a 66mm wheel, the durometer is what I'm stuggling with, not sure if I need to be below 80a or not? I'd like the opinions of a few slalom rulers. THX!

vents and sector 9

Ditto to what dave said. The right club for the course. I had sum dare sector 9 prototypes but my speed vents for that gnarly cracked out road. My riding style vs course vs temp vs set up vs angle of the dangle dictates wheel choice. Those speed vents are fun just real predictable control. them sector 9's have great top end. And the blue krypto's make an apearence now and then. I like trimmed avilas. what are typing about? Oh find a wheel you love and nurture it. Leaves are changing snow moving in, wheels turn to edges. Thanx seismic thanx sector 9 thanx mom

Re: 'vents on rough pavement

I rode the 75a vents at the Top Challenge race 2 weeks ago in montreal. montreal is not known for its grade A pavement. the race hill had tons of cracks, bumps, patch jobs and pavement changes. for a wheel with a larger size core, I exspected it to be a rough ride, but it turned out that the urethane absorbed all the imperfections just as well as a wheel with more 'than, ie a gumball or flywheel.

I also find that the vents slide very smoothly given the grippy lip and width of the wheel. i think the larger hub helps with this. Dan at seismic/3dm is putting alot of thought into the design of these wheels. Keep a eye out, BIGGER and better things are coming from seismic wheels.

ALSO, i've had no problems with the bearing housing in the hubs of the speed vents and I personally have 6 sets of them and have used them all.

Speed Vents

How is the "bearing housing"? I think the plastic around the bearing is a little bit undersized. Like in the Wings Slalom 71 wheels the outer bearing will possibly wear out the hub and the bearing seat will get larger and larger. (sorry for my bad englich)

Hey guys, I appreciate being able to put up a post up here and actually get some good responses - add a little controversy to the deal and it makes for some real intersting feedback. Can't say that I feel more confident of which wheel to choose, but I do feel better informed on the potential differences.
I only weigh 140lbs so wheel destruction has not been a prominent experience for me. If that's enough to save the outer lip of a Speed Vent on a fast run, I'll probably go with them just because I love that transparent red color(assuming they REALLY grip). Otherwise the gumballs will no doubt fit the bill - 76mm with no hub - that's got to be as sticky as it gets. I really like the Abec 11 wheel concepts and forgive me for being so picky, but neon green just isn't my favorite color. I'll actually choose a wheel just for it's mere appearance, but in this case, it's got to perform as well. I'll watch the posts for some more possible experiences on these wheels. Thanks for the help.

Straight Up

Wax, Your information is exactly backwards (as usual), and I will set the record straight for you. First of all, Kenny Mollica and Adam Schwippert are the only slalom riders that I sponsor. Why? Because both of them approached me and asked me if I would. I said, "yes". But don't ask me. Ask Kenny. Ask the Schwipperts. Maybe you'll believe them.

I've never met Luca. He has been pumped full of Turner/3dm/Seismics for as long they have existed. I know Rick and Rob and both of them make it a point not to ride my wheels for their own personal reasons. It's not surprising that they'd be riding Sector 9 or 3dm/Seismics.

What I do is make wheels available to skaters. I do give "bro deals" to some racers. I've told this to racers a million times, and I'll say it again here. I fully expect riders to race on whatever they think will give them the best chance to win. No one has any obligation whatsoever to ride my stuff. They do so out of choice, and they do so because they think that they're the right tool for the job. Period.

Bara - Yes, the gold medal winners know how to ride and contribute to their success. What I didn't mention was that some of these races were podium sweeps for us, and that it's not just one guy taking one spot in the standings. For example, 8 of the top 9 raced on our wheels at Bicknell the other night. I could list everyone in every race but it takes too long to type with one left hand as it is...

It's actually funny to hear Wax call other riders "lapdogs". Wax's "testimonials" on message boards have been so biased and misleading that he has been warned by moderators.

What I don't do is log on anonymously and start spinning or hyping my products. Telling the truth about them, and using real world results is good enough for me. There are lots of products out there, and I'm dedicated to making mine as good as I can. I'm a competitve racer. I race on my own stuff, and I do so because I know that riding anything else would be a disadvantage that I don't want to have to overcome. Vendors who don't race are trying to win in the marketplace. I want to win out on the track. Where it counts.
