The First Snowboard Contest - 1981
On 1/25/2008 Jack wrote in from United States  (64.161.nnn.nnn)

Finally figures out the YouTube thing...having some fun.

The First Snowboard Contest - 1981
Held at Ski Cooper in Leadville, Colorado. The event was sponsored by Offshore Clothing. This footage is from the video "Snowboarding's Holy Grail". Take a look at my footwear, Converse leather high top All-Stars. My speed suit was sponsored by Coors, even though I was probably the only guy at the contest who didn't drink.

Great video.

We have big sand dunes in Casper Wyoming at Lake Alcova.
We used to slide down the dunes on water skis... it didn't work too well. There was no run-out..... you had to face-plant in the water.

I want to know why Jack has had the same coiffure for 45 years? :)
And, how come Fluitt was falling so much?

Jack, Gary, greta stuff! That sure looks like like it would be a lot fun for sure.

Gary I think it was really smart letting Jack test the binding set-up first :)

Jack made me wear the Truckers hat but those sweet short shorts were all my idea. Watch him cut me off in that last scene though, clearly stealing the lime light.
Excuse me while I go put some groovy surf tunes on....

Surfin' dunes
On 5/9/2007 PSR wrote in from United States  (208.5.nnn.nnn)

Stance it aft by an inch or more. Clean off the old snow wax with citrus base cleaner. Detune the edges (base bevel) by 2 degrees, maybe 3* even. If it sticks on sand after the citrus cleansing, put Zardoz Not Wax on the base or Silicon Spray.
That should get you going, and the only bad thing here is the edge-detuning, as that'll make your board very 'loose' feeling, with very little edge grip if it's used again on Snow. So, a re-tuning would be likely if you intend to use that board again as a snowboard.

Sandboard Wax
On 2/27/2007 Dr.Dune wrote in from United States  (70.56.nnn.nnn)

Yes it will work but not as well as snow wax will on snow.
Sandboard wax is much harder than snow wax as it has to work in much higher temps than snow wax.
Use snow wax for snow and sand wax for sand.

craig i am glad you found henry sarria. i grew up with him and have known him since 1970 or so.i have been through it all with him, by his side, all of his boarding days from when he first started with his old rocket board with metal wheels and then i stayed with him for 12 year until he moved to calf.[i still have his old rocket and his jim overland surf board that he first started out on.] i wrote the first message hoping to track down some of his old friends in fla. just for fun. i forgot that i did this and i guess that you found him before i could tell him your e mail address. i'm glad that you are talking with him now and i called him and told him i found you. i hope i can find more of his friends from the 70's. it's always so nice to hear from old friends.
thank's valerie

I recently looked through a photo album from my grandfather's younger days, 1935. Inside there is a picture of a sand board with a tow rope attached. 1935, people have been trying to slide down hills for a long time!
