Venice Freestyle Jam -- Sk8Kings was in the house -- a little too late to catch the group session -- but rapped with Grogan and heard Pierre was there -- great feedback from the locals about what they saw early in the day. Lets do this again soon.

Bahne Skateboards
Stan and I would like to thank everyone for the tremendous support we have received.
We have decided to stay out of the street style board market and concentrate on what we know best. We have about 100 decks left, we're blowing them out for $20.00 each. These will surely become collectors items.

Big flatland freestyle jam this Sunday, Feb.16th, around noon in Venice beach, on the beach where the new mini skate park is. Lots of flatgroung surrounded by landscaping, nice family environment next to the crazinest of the boardwalk scene. Should be some pros there form all decades.

Yeah, not only the Ollie and kick-flip, they invented the entire sport of skateboarding in Florida, haven't you heard? Nobody saw any pictures of any of this when it was happening because Skateboarder Magazine was published in SoCal, and no one in Florida had a camera...or something like that.
I also heard that they invented snowboarding in Florida as well.

I dont know if this will help but it may explain the origins of the "Ollie", Maybe Alan Gelfand didnt invent it afterall, It looks like some guy named Scabs invented it?
On 11/19/2001 Scabs wrote in from 216.78.xxx.xxx: On 11/13/2001 hc wrote in from 207.212.xxx.xxx: lynn, cool info on rodney.
just curious, who is the first to hit kickflip (new school style)? and when? ********************************************* *************** hc, I wouldn`t be surprised if a cali boy takes credit for it but I`d have to believe it originated down in the Ratlands (south florida). I had this move back in `76 that started from a 360% spin and lift the board up in the air. At first I could only bust a 180% on this manuever but after long hours of practice, I finally started landing the 360%. Differance from the kickflip is not only was my board spinning but so was I.
Then a local skatepark opened that year in Hollywood called Skateboard USA. Under the ramp to the main bowl was a little bowl with lots of places to roll in. On hot summer days, this was the place to be to escape the heat. Soon this other kid started doing my move but he one-upped me and took it to the vert.
Yup, we`re talking about Alan Gelfand, my fellow rat. And the move is his...OLLIE and I respect him for not only pulling off the baddest trick but also revolutionizing skateboard too.
Others where doing tricks along the same lines too. That`s why I`d have to believe the new school kick flip had to originate fron down here. Just a natural progression of things.
And speaking of Alan, he and I are still buds and for what he`s done, he doesn`t have a big head. Just another local rat.

More tips for viewing at the PureGuts Broadband Theatre (http://pureguts.com/streams.htm) -----
MAC users –– Microsoft makes a Windows Media Player that should work with your operating system. Just scroll through this download site and choose the correct one. It’’s free. Find it at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp
In fact, for PC users –– it’’s a good idea to make sure you update to the latest version for optimal performance. Current version is 9. You can find it at the link above too. Make sure you pick the version that is right for your operating system (ie Win 98, ME, XP, 2000).
Cheers!

george, see my freestyle page on www.geocities.com/sk8sanjose
your answer, 'rodney mullen'
p.s. spotted on '54321', mike vallely complaining about the es SKATE event where old school tricks were banned.

george, you've proboly come to the wrong place. NCDSA'ers are usually not trick-focused if not anti-newschool. you might try a more street-style site.

My daughter is doing a book report for school on skateboarding, I was interested to know some specifics about certain tricks that might help her out. Who invented the: Ollie Kickflip Busting Air Since these 3 tricks seem to be the most important contributions to skateboarding, can anybody help?

The history of the YOYO Plant starts back in the early 80‘s. Due to the fact that we did not have a Half-Pipe in our town I started to goof around with my Freestyle board to get some kind of invert feeling. The first attempts were done as stationary varial plants with both feet on the ground and pushing the legs up and putting the board close to the feet. I thought about going higher up and came to the conclusion that something like this can only be done by rolling backwards in order to gain enough momentum to go really high. Just by accident I pulled off the move after some time.
Finally at the German Nationals in 1982 I did the first YOYO-Plant in a Freestyle routine. In the summer of 1983 I visited California and a sequence was taken by Per Holknekt and later published in TWS #3. In 1984 I also had a sequence in Thrasher in the ‚Something Else‘ page with a Plant down a small wall.
During the next years/ decades I perfected the move with all imaginable contorsions and versions.
The move is all about coordination (rolling/grabbing/ planting the hand) and no special handstand abilities. As far as I know there are only a few skaters in the world who ever pulled off the trick. Namely: Rodney Mullen, Graham Mac Eachran, Chester Sass, Terry Synnott, Keith Renna and possibly others. Here is a link: http://home.arcor.de/skateyoyo/Clips/YOYO_Plants1.WMV Enjoy YOYO

BMX manuals.
Maybe it's because on a bike, a wheelie is done while cranking the pedals and they needed a term to differentiate the balance-only version.

The Yoyo Plant
Yoyo Schulz, just wanted to let you know I think the Yoyo Plant is an incredible trick. It blows me away that you can roll into an invert on flat ground. I've only seen two other people pull it off: Rodney Mullen and Mark Gonzales. Is there anyone else you know of that can do it? Anyway, if you could elaborate on how you invented this great trick and any other info about it, it would me much appreciated.

The first time I can remember the word manual being used was in BMX to refer to a move where the rider came out of a half pipe onto the platform landing in a wheelie and coasted (in a wheelie) back round to a position where he would drop back in. Date wise I'd guess this was around 1984. I had no idea then why it was called a manual rather than a wheelie or when the term started being applied to similar moves in skating. Don't know if that helps but..........

i too would like to know where the word manual came from. IMHO, wheelie sounds pretty gay.
saw on 54321 (bluetorsh spinoff), 'es 'SKATE' event, a flatland event of sorts, pretty cool. Koston rules!

Here Here on the word MANUALS ...... I cringe when my 11 year old son goes on about doing his various ramp and street tricks by using absurd terminology. But it's funny at the same time and so be it...all of us old schoolers (old guys) had better get used to it and welcome it with open arms. Just skate.
