Wow. I just finished watching this. It was mentioned in Jocko Weyland's The Answer is Never, and I thought, I MUST see this! Shot in Montreal in 1966, it's a great look at the "nail two rollerskate wheels to a board" era. This predates "magic Rolling Board" and "Downhill Motion" by a decade! The final scene, shot reflected in a pond, of kids skating over a soundtrack of Genevieve Bujold singing, reminds me of that heat mirage scene in Downhill motion. I'm pretty sure this is the film I saw as a child once, in '69 or '70 and I remember being a little confused about whether the film was saying skateboards were bad or good, but they sure looked fun. Why was the nice policeman taking them from the kids if they were so fun? Huh? That was as confusing as all that Vietnam stuff on the news. The director, Claude Jutra went on to becom a household name in Canadian cinema, and the talent shows here. Don't expect to see anything radical- there's hardly any kickturns even, but lots of coffin runs. You can get this film from the National Film Board- it's short, 15 minutes, but you have to ask yourself whether you'd pay 20 bucks canadian to see kids skating in Beatle boots...hopefully the answer is yes.. Here's a link to the NFBs online store, it might switch to French on you, but you can click on "Anglais" somewhere, if you prefer English.

I don't suppose anyone would be interested in a trade. I am looking for any type of video that deals with speed boarding, and preferably, one with clips of speed riders in speed wobbles. I only have a few skating vids, but I have other stuff that may be worth while. please send me an email. I hardly check this forum....

Sandia Downhill Challenge & 4 Wheels Down

I've had the opportunity to preview the Sandia Downhill challenge video with the other TimeShip guys and I give it 1.9 thumbs up. The Sandia racing, longest grind contests (especially Brad Edwards' performance), and Indian School footage are all outstanding. The missing .1 of a thumb comes from the obvious lack of Bear race footage. The camera crew was not present due to the outlaw nature of the race, but the tape seems a bit incomplete without it. This tape, combined with Mollica's Hood River DVD (which I have not seen yet) should give the viewer a good feeling of that awesome weekend.
On the other end of the spectrum, I recently purchased Dan Gesmer's new video 4 Wheels Down on VHS. The quality of the video as well as the skating are top notch. It looks much better than the Quicktime version. If you dig this type of skating (as all true skaters should at least be able to appreciate) you will not be disappointed, except for the short running time. A 15 or 20 minute video would require less rewinding.
Overall, both of these videos belong in any true skater's video collection.
