WHOA! Just came back from Lanzarote. Surfing and longboarding. Asphalt is sweet, because of lavabased. Runs are smooth and long ( 5 km easy, just carving and sliding). You can ride in a roundabounds at 40 km/h. More details of spots, send me a mail.

Location

Had kids things this weekend.

Checked out a location we may have a flat slalom comp on. Anyone interested in this type of event. Its wide enough to race a staggered course. Surface is good, not quite as good a Sevenoaks station but close.

Longboard Slalom Deck Length
On 3/15/2002 tasos/ILSA wrote in from (63.234.nnn.nnn)

There has to be specifications and axle lengths, otherwise there will be no such thing as "longboard slalom". You can read our proposed thoughts on this matter on our official site on www.streetrecords.com. Click on ILSA link(International Longboard Slalom Association), or click on the links on this site for the "2002 World Longboard Slalom Championships" to get you there. We look forward to reading your opinions here and on the "slalom" link (ncdsa)and hope that we will all find a way to promote this sport in a progressive and positive way. Longboarding IS the new school...

French lengths
On 3/15/2002 Michael wrote in from (195.92.nnn.nnn)

Martin Drayton, Paul Price and I raced at Les Deux Alpes, every Sunday in their slalom event. After Martin had won 8 times in a row, he told the French that he wasn't competing the next week, but that his friend Paul Price would 'give it a go'. He won. Then at the last event of the summer he told them that he wouldn't race, but his friend Michael 'would give it a go'. They disqualified me because my board 'wasn't long enough' after I made it the the finals. Or could it be that we were winning too much?!!!!!!
They went on about , amongst other things, that the overhang of a Leemo wasnt enough, after I changed from a Turner, so axle spaceing might not be the simple solution we seek. Though id go with that idea. We will still beat the French though!!!! (friendly challenge!)

Longboards
On 3/15/2002 Clingfilm wrote in from (194.154.nnn.nnn)

I think that there needs to be a minimum axle length of 30". This will stop smaller boards double pumping courses. The short boards can have their own giant slalom event, even over the same course.

I am confused over the French events. Tell me whats wrong and I will amend the spreadsheet.

My skatebuddy Chris Eggers just gave me the info on an hot interview of Attila Aszodi.
Kinda interseting, because Attila used to live in Germany in the late 70's, early 80's.
I personally met him in Frankfurt a long time ago and found him on an e-maillist.....

Enjoy the interview in English at: http://www.sk8mag.de/People/Attila_Aszodi/index-en.html

If you have contest dates let me know what type of events and I will add them to my calender and make it available on line, although I do promise the finishing of the Longskate site.Should I include downhill only events or only events which have some form of slalom.

Give me more details on Pierres competitions in May and later, can we do shortboard also.
I can post these dates on badass as I can moderate that site.

FL weather
On 3/14/2002 Scabs wrote in from (66.21.nnn.nnn)

JG,
Actually the weather is more comfortable, for those who are not from here, from janurary to april. It`s only when a pesky coldfront comes through that it might drop into the 40`s or 50`s.Since janurary 1st, we`ve had a total of 10 days where we didn`t see 80 degrees. By april, we should start seeing 90`s. Todays high was 85 degress.

I just got to start working on the permits for the Broward County Dump road for the 2003 World Slalom Competition...

Dates

JG
We speak the same language. The dates I posted have the following definition:
Primary, no known US event soon (within a few days) afterwards.
Secondary; dates which may cause some travel problems due to other events.

Of course no one will do every event and there is a place for all, but if we plan world events they need to be well managed. It is difficult here as we are starting from scratch to gain permission, which has taken a great deal of time with no result yet.
To your dates can I add an early or late competition in the south of France. Cheap to get too. JMA will co-ordinate.
The contest section is not used enough on this site which could be a global calender.

FFF
I put these dates as it was easier than compling all the events. I will work on this and post. I goth the details from many sites.

race schedules- bang for the buck!
On 3/14/2002 john gilmour wrote in from (151.204.nnn.nnn)

Clingfilm- I know it is hard for you to provide dates as many dates have already been set.

One thing that would be great is to see the promoters get together next year and set out an affordable racing schedule for the athletes that minimizes air travel- takes advantage of weather conditions and least chance of rain, and does not occur when airfares are at their peak. And puts races geographically back to back week end to week end- or perhaps even a weekend- and then a week night race nearby two days later so a trip could be 4 days instead of a week.

Lack of cooperation and planning would result in dates which might make it impossible to attend some contests and cause bad attendance for some promoters and for the good of the sport this should be avoided.

As for this year- we just have to make do and be happy we have so many contests when there were so few before. I'm happy just to have some racing- but I know I would never continue to race like this as it is too expensive , inconvenient, and takes too much of my time in travel. I'm expecting to be away from home over 65 days this year- silly really. To have this same schedule happen two years in a row would make others drop teh idea of attending all the races.

I think it is nice to race in weather that makes our wheels go the fastest with the most traction. That tends to be around 62- 68 degrees. (too cold- stiff muscles- and no urethane rebound- too hot and the wheel mushes - (oil comes out of the road surface) and starts to lose traction).

So I would start thinking about which months offer the least likelyhood of rain in the UK. Paris contests should occur when airfares are cheap since the prices fluctuate a lot. Best after peak tourist season. The ideal of a chunnel series is an excellent one.

I'd like to see an early season opener in California.

No contests in New England for November- April,(too much rain
and too cold) or Mid July through August (too hot). Ideally May, early June and early September through early October (Indian summer week- foliage is great them also) for New England.

For the Mid-Atlantic (DC) I would think They could have an Mid May event- Early June (less chance for rain than early May). But absolutely NO events for July and August and early september (super high humidity). Even at night the humidity is super high and the dew points are unlike anything this side of Monsoon season in Indonesia.

Florida has great weather starting in April and they could have events then. Also during the early winter January when it is warm- but cold and thinner snow cover in New England. late February and March seem to be pretty cold and conflict heavily with Ski season so the New England and Colorado racers would not come. Too much rain and wind during hurricane season. (I remember it being very cold in early march in Ft. Lauderdale during spring break- as did many CONTESTANTS in other compeTITionS.

We all know Paris in the spring is amazing in terms of the beauty of the city- but airfares are likely to be high.

Colorado weather- I've got no idea. Fluitt would know.

Southern California would be great during the rainy months of late september- November as New Englanders and UK people are dying to have an excuse to travel then. April would also be great as it rains all April everywhere else.

Late November and December is too close to thanksgiving and x-mas.

Canada would be nice in mid- late July and early September- no rain- sunny and not too warm or too cold. Even July 1st Toronto can be cold by the average person's standards. Claude....what do you think?

SF would be great in July and August- though I really am not sure about the weather then. Bruce Brewington could tell us.

The idea of regional weekends being picked for promotoers to throw contest would be great. If a certain weekend is inconvenient for a promoter- then there should not be a contest held on that date. promoters should not have contests on dates which would cause increased travel expenditure for the racers. Ie someone throwing a 2 contests in California and then a Hypothetical promoter in Georgia throwing a race one of the two back to back weekends or mid week.

I am being completely hypocritical in throwing a July 4th race in Boston during the hot months of summer- But as there have been no contests held in front of many spectators I feel compelled to do this. I would not hold a July 4th race if there were other races in front of 400,000- 600,000 possible spectators.- or even a thousand spectators for that matter. right now the greater need for exposure and growth of our sport outweighs the comfort of the competitiors. besides.... it could be nice given to New England's most unpredictable weather on the planet. You don't like the weather here....give it a minute and it will change.

Would someone please please make a downloadable contest chart with available weekends? Adam- would you be willing to make a board with this or host one where promoters can sign up for weekend dates?

Good dates for comps (free from other planned races)

As the global calendar is filling up I thought it good to list available dates that have no events planed in the US or Europe, and are possible for international competition.
If you are planning a major event you may wish to consider these.

Primary dates which will allow US skaters to enter

Any weekend in April

25-16 May
24 – 25 August
21-22 September

Secondary dates which will allow US skaters to enter:

11-12 May
29-30 June
13-14 July
27-28 July
4- 5 August
31-1 September
7-8 September
