For those of you that already know how to do this, disregard the post...

For those of you who don't know how to remove shields for proper cleaning, check out this website: http://www.edsbearings.com/faqbearings.html .

Alright, I'll shut up about this now. :)

shield removal cont.
On 6/9/2001 Hizzout wrote in from (208.164.nnn.nnn)

Alright...I feel like an idiot now. *blush* I got my bearings open last night. The golden ball bearings had the "c" clip in them, and the black panters...well I'm really ashamed to admit, but they had the rubberized shields, and came out and popped right back in no problem (duh me!!) I feel enlightened now though. heh.

Hugh, I was wondering... why don't you put a section on your webpage for cleaning bearings / shield removal with step by step pictures for some others out there who might be confused? I'm sure that kind of info & pictures would be appreciated. Just a suggestion.

This website: http://www.ntn.ca/skate2.htm has a lot of very interesting information on bearing performance. Just thought I'd pass it along to you all.

Kristin,

I still haven't taken any of my bearings apart. I think I'm just slow or something, or possibly my bearings don't come apart....because I can't find the spot to get the clip out!!

I've got a set of:

Black Panthers
Sector 9 Greaseballs
Golden Balls
and a set of generic ABEC 3's

Maybe I should go by a local skate shop here and have them show me in person...This is the one aspect in skating I've never been able to figure out. Grrr...

Peace

The angular contact seal on the swiss bearings functions very well when they are accellerating and decellerating rythmicly like on a half pipe but under continuous acceleration the bind a bit;)

I bought some Swiss bearings years ago that flat sucked. Pretty fast on ramps, but they slowed way down on hills. My theory is everyone makes a lemon once in awhile.

1 picture = 1000 words
On 6/6/2001 Kristin wrote in from (198.107.nnn.nnn)

Finally, thanks to the recent pictures, I was brave enough to take apart and clean my bearings. I had an irrational fear of taking them apart and small pieces springing away, never to be seen again; ball bearings rolling away, someone stepping on them, and me in trouble. I feel much better now. Thanks for your help.

seals vs shields
On 6/6/2001 Herbn wrote in from (216.107.nnn.nnn)

There may be new developments in low friction seals, but shields are no friction(they don't touch)the arguement being that if you ride in filthy environments ,but regular boards don't get that dirty,ok the neglector gutter skaters chime in now.....dirt boarders need seals, not really street guys.Bearings on skateboards are way easy to replace, relube, and they're pretty cheap to. That's of course compared to something like bottom bracket bearings on a bicycle or bearings in motorcycles or cars, ridden day in day out in all weather and mud and stuff.

608-2RS
On 6/6/2001 Adam wrote in from (165.247.nnn.nnn)

Bearing ad from 1978. Comments, bearing experts? I remember the advent of GMN and NTN bearings which largely replaced the 2RS bearings around 1977/8. We kids all thought the metal-sided bearings were faster. Now I'm wondering which is really better, and if modern technology has devised lower drag RS seals.

Sheilds
On 6/5/2001 Herbn wrote in from (216.107.nnn.nnn)

All sheilds are removable, replacing them is the problem, rubberized sheilds, just pry them carefully, they should pop right back in,on metal ones, look for a split snapring. Look in the very edge of where the sheild meets the outer race, if there's a interuption, thats a very fine snap ring, seems like it should be called a "snapwire" .Using a sewing pin pry at the edge of the wire, some are cut at an angle to make it easier ,it may spin a bit, but it will come out, watch for where it goes when it comes loose it may fly away. The sheild will easily come out of the bearing when the ring is gone.If there is no snapring, the sheild is pressed in and removing it will ruin it.

stuck bearings Cont.
On 6/5/2001 Hizzout wrote in from (208.164.nnn.nnn)

Your probably right Adam.

I guess my problem is that I never take off the shields when I clean. (I've never been sure how to do it!) I usually soak and shake my bearings in something like WD-40, or gasoline, dry them, then soak them in some kind of oil, like SpeedCream, or Tri-Flow.

I know most of my bearings, the shield can be removed, for more extensive cleaning...but I'm afraid I won't be able to get it back together.

Any online tutorials (with pictures) of an easy way to assemble / disassemble bearings?

stuck bearings
On 6/5/2001 Adam wrote in from (207.251.nnn.nnn)

The most common cause of seized bearings would be common rust. Did your bearings ever get wet? With people running less and less lube these days in their quest for speed, bearings often lack the protection against moisture that lubes also provide.

stuck bearings
On 6/5/2001 Hizzout wrote in from (208.164.nnn.nnn)

The other day I was cleaning out my black panther bearings, and 3 of them were completely siezed up. They wouldn't turn at all when I'd try to spin them in between my fingers. So I soaked & shook them in some WD-40 for a bit, but they still wouldn't budge. The shields were not damaged at all and the bearings were fairly new, and were not too dirty.

The bearings were in a set of aluminator wheels, and the only thing I could think of was maybe aluminum shavings somehow got inside. But I don't see any damage to the aluminator hubs...

After a few hours of soaking in WD-40 and another few hours of soaking in speed cream, they spin good again, but not as well as before. Again I don't see any outside physical damage at all...any ideas what it could be?

??????

Powell Bones Swiss
On 6/2/2001 Rob wrote in from (172.128.nnn.nnn)

I recently purchased a set of regular Powell Bones Swiss bearings. I skated on Powell Bones Swiss Gold bearings for 2 years before tearing one up when I hit a rock. The new bearings seem a lot slower after 3 months than the Gold after 2 years. The skate shop tells me they are the same bearings. I don't believe them. Are the Gold better?

All the jammed up bearings seem to have loosened up once the dented sheilds were removed only the shattered one needs to be droped in an envelope and sent back, repeat do not buy these if you're a grommet or sell to grommets.

Ceramic bearings in general

herbn, i completely agree with your post about ceramics. i put a derailleur with ceramic bearings on my mountain bike last year and they were trashed after two rides. two shattered bearing and dented shields.

i got some SIN metal bearings a few weeks ago from longskate. they are working out nicely.

DON'T sell them to shortboarding little kids who want the "very best",two days one shattered bearing, 3 dented sheilds that rub, i figure it's gotta be the inner bearings, that take all the impact.I think i'm gonna use the four remaining good bearings myself.
