drywall screw
On 6/28/2001 PCB wrote in from (207.172.nnn.nnn)

Herb, I’ll trust that your idea on removing non-removeable shields works. I’ve never seen a drywall screw before, so please keep that in mind when I ask, How are drywall screws different from any other screws that would allow it to lift out the shield? Would it somehow fit in one of the intervaled marks that are around the edge of the shield? These marks seen awfully tiny to me.

Silicon Spray
On 6/28/2001 SimFucious wrote in from (24.187.nnn.nnn)

I always Lube my bearings up before a long session of slalom. I was looking for my Bones speed cream and couldn't find it. I then proceded to look for my Ninja speed oil and couldn't find that. After about 10 mins of freaking out i went to my parent. "oh that stuff, yeah i threw it away." said my dad. I could feel the blood beginning to boil. I walked to the garage with fists clenched and swearing under my breath. I looked at an aerosol can and it said "Silicone Spray: Repels water, dirt, and lasts long." I've used it ever since. Its fast, cheap, and easy to use

AZF/Sheilds
On 6/28/2001 DaveG wrote in from (208.29.nnn.nnn)

Herb N,
When I stated "that's what I used to do" I didn't mean literally!
I too used a very small awl to "pry" the shields free! I 've got a few sets of AZF And a few sets of SIMS RACING that have been dormant for 20 years! They just need a little TLC w/a pointy object to "RIP" those shields off for a thorough cleaning and lube job! I let some speed cream seap into them, But still have a tad bit o' grit!!
No metal shavings for me thanx!
Enjoy, Dave G

shieldless bearings
On 6/28/2001 ur13 wrote in from (129.42.nnn.nnn)

Why would you even want sheildless or non-sealed bearings???

I know they make it easier to oil and clean them...but by leaving them open you make it easier to get grit in them in the first place. My beloved Bones Swiss have an open side to them which has bugged me for years but since I love them I deal with it. The panthers have a removable shield/seal and I tend to put those on boards I ride on my gnarly dirtier pavement.

I know once a set of bearings is broken in they rock, I have been swapping a loved set of bones swiss for years...but honestly unless we are talking about ceramic bearings...if they get dirty or grungy just buy a new set and spend the few hours to break 'em in. $45 tops (worst case) for a set of abec 7s or swiss isn't alot of money.

Oh well.

Anyone out there want to tell me if Ninja abec 7s are all that? No one really answered me on that one.

Removing non-removable shields
On 6/28/2001 Hizzout wrote in from (208.164.nnn.nnn)

I'm lost...

Why would anyone want to remove the shields from a bearing that has non-removable shields?? That all seems like too much trouble than just purchasing new bearings with removable shields.

Also, couldn't the possible damage created from removing non-removable shields render the bearing un-usable completely??

Wow ,do you work for a bearing co?:)metal dust/shavings, that close to an oilly bearing, ouch!To remove a pressed in shield use the tip of a sheet rock screw to catch the edge of the sheild then pry.

PCB ,
Yeah ,thanks ! that's what I did in the 70's but thought I was maybe just a destructive punk and that maybe in our age and wisdom had figured a way to finesse those babys apart!!! Well off to trash some shields!!!! This is gonna bring back memories!!! Where's my hammer.

Removing non-removeable shields
On 6/27/2001 PCB wrote in from (207.172.nnn.nnn)

Dave G, if you don’t mind trashing one of the shields (only) of each bearing, it can be done with a dremel-style rotary tool. Use as small of a drill bit as possible, preferably made of something hard such as tungsten carbide, to drill a hole in the shield, just deep enough to break through it (use lots of restraint). Then insert a tiny screwdriver into the hole at an angle and pop the shield out. I did this successfully to an entire set of bearings, but then couldn’t think of a way to get all the grease and crud out that was causing resistance, and the BB retainer (metal) didn’t seem like it could be removed without damaging something.
Hope that helps.

yak ABEC5
On 6/27/2001 Leo wrote in from (146.18.nnn.nnn)

Have anybody tried this bearings? i was replacing my old greaseballs abec3 for the yaks last nite and they rolled slower at first when i tried them, i dont see they are well oiled, is it ok that i reoild them even when they are new?
another thing, when i was taking out of the wheels, one of the plastic shields apparently "bended" to the inside of the bearing making a lot of friction, i´ll try to take the c-clip and "pop" the shild up

AZF Speed

Just found some old AZF SPEED bearings in a set of my ole' wheels! I used to force the sheild off by any means possible....No split ring. Does any body know of a way to get these off W/O trashing them? They appear to be pressed into place and have half a dozen or so plits around them!!!

i tighten them down till they are firm, then back them off about quarter to half a turn, i've found that to be the best for me

thanks. i have got spacers in them, but am lacking washers. i am assuming that most washers will work with most wheel bearing combos. thanks for the link to bob's. it seems like a cool site. i will stop by the shop on my way home and get those on it. thanks again.

You'll also probably need to clean your bearings. Check out this page, http://www.edsbearings.com/faqbearings.html on how to do that.

Hope these links helped.

P.S. These links were snagged from the Links section of NCDSA

First of all Mike, you'll need to equip your trucks & bearings with speed rings and bearing spacers. That way, you can tighten your wheel nut all the way down, and the wheel will spin perfectly!

Check out this page, http://www.bobstricktips.com/pages/spacers.shtml on how to setup your wheels/trucks/bearings.

Peace

bearings
On 6/26/2001 Mike wrote in from (63.226.nnn.nnn)

i am not into bearings as i seem to focus on my skating tecnique more than equipment, so obviously i am not too knowledgeable on bearings. i bought some pig abec 5's about a year ago. they have loosened up a bit since i got them, but what are the general guidelines on taking care of them? i haven't touched them since i put them on. how tight should i be bolting on my wheels? obviously the tighter that nut is, the worse the wheel spins, but is there anything i should be looking for? what is the optimal procedure for making my bearings work the most efficiently? thanks for any info. mahalo!

ninja 7s
On 6/25/2001 david wrote in from (209.178.nnn.nnn)

i have a set of ninja 7s on some exkate turbos. this is definetly a fast set-up. with spacers and 2 speed washers per wheel, the turbos spin for about a minute just by slappng the wheel. i know that does'nt deturmine how fast they are, but it proves something. my friend has swiss bones, and they feel a tad bit smoother and faster than my ninjas. overall, a good bearing for the price. ohyea, i got the ones with speed cream, and not the slower grease ones.
peace

ninja abec 7s
On 6/25/2001 ur13 wrote in from (209.246.nnn.nnn)

Placed an order at longskate.com tonight for some new power paws (ahhh...blue 78a negotiators and red 78a centerlines, yummy!), cruised over to the bearings section to get myself another set (or 2) of Bones Swiss and AHHHH, they have none (never again will I ride Bones Reds) and I am over panthers. So I ended up with a set of Ninja Abec 7s.

Are Ninja abec 7s really all that? The only person I know who rides them, ninja abec 5s, is a vert skater but she swears by them (will hit you hard if you say anything bad about them).

Opinions? Testimonials?

Graphite

The correct way to put in graphite is...don't! Spend a few bucks for oil such as Powell speed cream, put in a few drops, done.

I've found toluelene to be the best cleanser/degreaser.
We use it in the rafting industry to clean surfaces before repairs. Took some home to my bearings viola!! Good as new and no residue at all. Don't use it if you have andy plastic or nylon seals in contact , Or they will no longer be in existance! You can get it at an auto paint shop!

IKS Sealed Bearings
On 6/21/2001 Pre-School Rider wrote in from (209.198.nnn.nnn)

Adam, that add is actually pretty signifigant,as shortly after that(with in a year),IKS almost was out of the bearing picture in skateshops.NTN,GMN/Sims,SKF,FaG,Fafnir,and Hoover all jumped onto the 608ZZ sheilded bearing bandwagon, and IKS never really recovered it's market share. It's really ironic when you consider that Hoover used a mixed type bearing in it's dealings with Kryptonics. These bearings were ABEC 3,sheilded on one side, and sealed on the other(like the Panthers are today). Before I got into using the Gold Series Sims bearings,I used to pop the sealed side off my Hoovers, run the Sheilds on the outside, and(for those days)just Fly! Now my remaining Hoovers are used on my rain boards or on my wife's Quadrollers, and Ninja Abec 5 or 7's are on the fast toys.

HAMM,
Are they ceramic or steel?
I've got a set of new steels in the box but don't know which wheels I'll put them in!! Wish they made them in 8mm
Does anyone have a cure? Or should I just cut 2mm of the spacer assembly provided in the 10mm?
