Bearing Review
Liquid nitrogen
On 12/7/2001 Chris Raezer wrote in from (12.13.nnn.nnn)

I use liquid nitrogen to shrink brass bushings to fit into holes in titanium jet engine struts. When the brass warms up, it expands to make a TIGHT fit in the hole. I've never heard of it changing the metal's properties, I'll ask an engineer and find out. If you could shrink the bearings and then press them into a hub, there would be no need for spacers. Also I don't know how well some of these materials would handle the extreme cold, liquid nitrogen is minus 320 Fahrenheit.

Cryogenic Bearings
On 12/7/2001 Herbn wrote in from (64.12.nnn.nnn)

I was just mentally zipping through that tech post on bearings trying to think of some smartass extreme over done bearing idea, when this occured to me...cutting tools are treated with liquid nitrogen to make them last longer. It actually compresses the surface molecules, no they don't need to be kept cool, the metal actually retains most of the compression after it warms.I wonder if this has been tried with bearings? Ok ok so it may sound like a joke but it supposedly works.

Bones Swiss
On 12/6/2001 Mitch T wrote in from (198.80.nnn.nnn)

My Bones Swiss are the smoothest rolling bearings I've ever seen. They can be had for around $30 online from a few places. I like my China Bones too. When I lived in Switzerland I used to like the SKF bearings. I tried to buy some here in the states and I was quoted about $5 a bearing, ouch! I have a sets of purple FKD bearings which are very nice too, but I still prefer the Swiss.

6 ballz
On 12/5/2001 Duane wrote in from (63.21.nnn.nnn)

Check out this bearing babble

http://home1.gte.net/pjbemail/Bearing.html

The one thing that makes sense is that as the balls get smaller, the balls have to slip less to roll on both the inner and outer races at the same time (since the circumference is closer to the same). So more, smaller balls should be theoretically faster. As usual the differences will be small, Powell bearings are already the most overrated product on the planet, 6 ball probably more of the same.

Bones Super Swiss 6 "six ball"
On 12/5/2001 ur13 wrote in from (64.154.nnn.nnn)

I noticed a post about these a few down but no feedback yet. They seem designed with the intention of absorbinf shock for big drops better, but if they are faster (between a bones swiss and a bones ceramic) wow! Anyone know anything about these puppies?

No PT hype, just facts
On 12/1/2001 Chris Raezer wrote in from (63.36.nnn.nnn)

A couple days ago I emailed Ed at Pleasure Tool to ask about sales tax being as we're both in Washington State. He told me not to worry about it, he takes care of that himself at the end of the year. Ask yourself, when was the last time a business told you not to worry about the tax, they would rather have a satisfied customer? Never! This gesture got him an order from me and if the bearings are as good as what people are saying here, he'll get many more.

The performance of these PT bearings at La Costa left nothing to desire. Quiet and fast all day.

The important thing to watch out for (with any bearings) is to place speedrings on both sides of the wheels as the locking nut and truck can indent the shield of the bearing because of the lateral force while turning. When this happens (it can happen after your furst run) it might be best to replace it right away. Antother remedy to prevent your bearings from aging too fast is by placing a washer ontop of the speedring on the outsie of the wheel. This will keep dirt and moisture away to a certain extend.

Btw Adam, Pleaure tools does have ceramics available for under $ 50. Ask Ed about them.

Rode the shielded ABEC-7s at LC to 22nd place. They ran smooth every run Friday and Saturday. It was great to have all my wheels loaded & ready to go as I didn't settle on wheels until the Pro A brackets.

Have the sealed ABEC-7s back in place so the rides are ready once monsoon season has passed.

Pleasure Tools are not only great bearings - they're a great value as well. Oh, the new gold shields look way cooler than the orange.

After 4 months of daily riding on the mean streets of Oakland, my $12 PT ABEC 7 sealed bearings are still fast and quiet. I even run through puddles on occasion and it doesn't phase them. But I'm dying to drop $90 on some ceramics so I have something to do each weekend!

I won't even pretend to want to waste time cleaning bearings every week. If they are that good then I would practice with lesser quality and use them for racing only.

Bearing maintenance is important but to pend that much money and then spen a souple of hours a week. I just don't have that kind of time anymore.

hey whats up these bearings are the best out there there much better than swiss 6 because i own all swiss made bearings black,china,ceramics,swiss6 and i know that ceramics have been working for me for 4 years now the catch is you have to clean them every week ,for a life time of good use and maintain them but for 90$ there well worth it

PT Bearings
On 11/28/2001 Claude wrote in from (24.112.nnn.nnn)

I took the PT"S right out of the package and mounted them on wheels and decks and rode at La Costa. They worked great seemed to get faster as they got worn in.

No noises or drag at all. They spin freelly and smooth woth or wothout the wheels. I know that compared to my old Germans and Krypto's I;ve used in the past they just seem as good. They seem to be actually a little better and a lot less expensive. I will ride them some more over the next while and will report any changes or sign of weakness or wear. I don't expect it but you never know.

This is to FASTER SKATER THEN YOU !

My concerning PT Bearings were sincere and in no way because I was sponsored. It was legitimate as per the way it all happened from my first inquiry. I later noticed (as ADAM pointed out)that he is now a page sponsor.

In my initial inquiry I asked him to consider sponsoring the event to help promote his company and help the site. La Costa was struggling for Sponsors at the time.

My sponsorship offer came from ED after the post and the comments were unfounded. I am not cutting down anyone elses service just expressing the satifaction at the time.

Maybe you could understand if you were in my shoes. I'm sorry you were to CHICKEN SHIT to post your real name.

6 ball swiss
On 11/25/2001 Herbn wrote in from (64.12.nnn.nnn)

break out the gram scale, separate a regular bearing and a six ball weigh the balls, scientificly. Now here's a catch;where you'd need real physics, even if the six ball were just a bit lighter, the weight is spinning further off the center of the sphere, so it has more effect, ouch. My guess;being someone who has actually disassembled and reassembled a set of swiss,i'm guessing that the sixballs are easier to put together(they couldn't be tougher:),seven ball swiss and all other seven ball bearings squeeze together pretty tightly,i figure the six balls compress into a smaller percentage of the bearing race, thereby making assembly easier which equals lower production effort/cost which equals moe money for powell, cause do you think they're gonna be cheaper?,asked and answered, judge jury and witnesses, that's me:)

Customer Service is excellent with the Ed's people and those associated with them!

I fired off a very late e-mail hoping to get a couple of sets for saturday (just incase I decided to run some wheels other than my aluminators) The guys there had one of their buds hand deliver them to me at La Costa! Now THAT'S great Customer Service!

I will be putting them through my very un-scienfific testing and reviewing them on my site real soon... HR

PS On the customer service note: I must say that Poolskater.com was extrememly responsive to me when I contacted them (called me back on the PHONE too... you know that thing that your daughters always have stuck to their heads?!?!)

So these two seem to be right up there with Solidskate and Longskate... at least in my book... HR

New Bones Super Swiss 6
On 11/24/2001 Dubkiller wrote in from (24.64.nnn.nnn)

Saw a new ad in TWS for Bones Super Swiss 6. Interesting. I've seen it go the other way, from 7 balls to 8 balls, but this is the first I've seen it it go from the standard 7 to 6. The balls are 2o% bigger and the ad claims they accelerate faster and have a higher top speed. Can that be? I figure they'd have a higher top speed, but would be slower to accelerate.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to some feedback on these. I have some original metal shielded Bones Swiss, and they've been very good to me over the years.

ABec
On 11/24/2001 Herbn wrote in from (64.12.nnn.nnn)

Most of you grown ups(outs:)may not subscribe to ABEC shmabec but i must admit that it's harder to find fast 3 's than it is to find slow 5's or 7's my best example is Ninja 3 vs World Industry 5's or 7's but in general ....like having a V8 engine in your car doesn't necessarily make you faster than a 4 cylinder but if that's the ONLY info you know, same with bearings, the shiney red paint doesn't mean it's going fast either, explain it to a cop:)oh well i rattle on.

PT

After All the Hype about ABEC ratings thats been written, to which most of us "grown ups" don't subscribe, due to the fact that the abec rating is more to do with tolerances rather than speeds. who cares who rides what !!

what most people seem to be praising with PT is the quality of service.

the customer is king afterall
