Pleasure Tools are a pleasure to deal with!

WOW!
I ordered some Pleasure Tools late Friday night off the website. Saturday afternoon about 1:00 I got an e-mail confirmation of my order. Well, the order was WRONG. It was all my fault. For some strange reason I had clicked on the "individual bearing" box instead of the "full tube of 8" selection.
So, I immediately called Ed and left a message on his machine and sent an e-mail explaining that the order was WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! and to please STOP! STOP! STOP! About 2:00 my time I got an e-mail from Ed saying he caught the mistake, adjusted the billing to my credit card and would still get the order shipped SATURDAY.
Today, my bearings showed up! Friday order, Saturday SNAFU and bearings in my mailbox on Monday. From Vancouver, Washington to the coast of South Carolina in less than two days. That's 3,000 miles or more.
No matter how you slice it, that's just plain impressive. Oh, the U.S. Post Office express postage price? $3.85.

about 3 years ago my friend got a new deck. i diddnt know anyting about bearings back then. However on a slightly downhill street i could ride his board with only one push and go down the entire street. I though his deck was amazing. The only bad part was my friend is careless so for 2 years he stoped riding and left his skateboard outside. Through rain, snow, potato bugs and maybe squirrels pissing on it, his deck finally collapsed so he gave it to me. Now that i have some knowledge of bearings i found that the bearings he had were a abec 1. i was surprised and funny enough those bearings work better than my bones and lucky 5's. Think about it guys, bearings thats been through rain for 2 years and still work great are u gunna spend a lot of money on brand name bearings>?

Cknuck - I'm curious what "con's" you've heard about Ron's? I've never heard any problems specific to Ron's before.

I can say that Pleasure tools are a really good and fast bearing. I've been on them for 4 years. Yes some of the sets sitting in some of my Slalom wheels and set-ups are 4 years old.
I know Ousts are good. I've tested and liked them. Sice trying the Swiss bearings in the mid 80's i haven't tried them again. I've heard Pro's and Cons about Ron's bearings.
Bottom line. How many bearing factories are there? How little is the significance of the bearing really come down to in Slalom racing. I know you don't want a crappy bearing. In a typical TS, Hybrid it really shouldn't matter much. In a downhill or maybe even a Super G or long GS. I can tell you that some of my times on certain course don't reflect a slower bearing at all. If they had a steering system built in for accuracy it would help.
PT ceramics and non- Ceramics are just fine. Kenny rode PT's to the World Championships in 2003 unless he switched prior. A lot of guys are ridding the all kinds and see very little difference.

sin system ceramics

I recently got a set of sin system ceramics to give em a go. Excellent bearings. I found out Sin use grease in their bearings which I was quite sceptical about because they tend to be sluggish for speed, but changed my tune the more I used em cause they just get quicker and quicker everytime I use em. The only downside I find is all the sleeves and spacers required to run em on 8mm axles. What surprised me more was even after u finally set em up, If you don't get the right tension on the wheel nut it can result in a sketchy ride. Too tite and the bearings don't roll enough. The sleeve and spacers are aluminium which can crush and deform under pressure clamping up the bearing (I prefer steel). Too loose and everything is all shakey because of low tolerance fitment resulting in a rough ride on any surface. Bottom line is, the actual bearing is very good, quality balls (Si3 N4 or Silicone Nitride, the higher grade ceramic), low maintainence, and affordable. I'm looking forward to trying them at real speed (80km/h+) as soon as I setup some trucks with 10mm axles and use the tophats for monopoly. :)

bones and rons are better than pleasure tools mostly because of the sealing system and the companys quality control. i've never been on rons, but they're cheaper than bones. BUT bones have been around forever and if the quality of their reds and swiss say anything, i'd bet that their ceramics are the best on the market. too bad the cheapest you can find them is like 85 bucks.

Have you tried the "creaky" bearings in other wheels? Sometimes it's the wheel(s) and not the bearings. If it is the bearings, try isolating it to one wheel, then swap in a "known good bearing" until you find the culprit. Disassemble that bearing and you tell us what the problem is. It would be guesswork at best to try and diagnose the problem from here.

Best for Slalom

its more of a strained noise than a dirty noise. these make a creaking noise during a turn...its sorta hard to describe it, i have heard some say that its from a broken race or something but i find it hard that i broke a race.
sometimes the noise is made by a slight slip in placement, i'll check it again.

Best for Slalom?

Adam, Are you using properly sized bearing spacers? Are you riding in high dust/dirt areas? Are the cores of your wheels dirty prior to installing the new bearings?
No bearing of any quality should get noisy after one week. Perhaps a sealed (not shielded) bearing would be better for your area.

Best for Slalom?

Hey guys. Recently i swapped out my dead mini-logo bearings in my slalom board for some brand new redz right before the Farm Finale. They spun forever after giving them a flick with a finger (i love perfect spacers) but now i notice that about after a week of riding these bearings creek just like my mini-logos did. i believe this is because if the enormous side loads created during slalom. so what i am asking is what bearing is best for slalom? or what bearings best holds up to side loads?
to answer this question i would greatly appreciate an e-mail since i don't check this section often.
thanks

Well, there's one certain difference between Ron's custom NMB ceramics and the SinSystems: the SinSystems use 9 teeny balls and top-hat adaptors to shim them down from a 10mm-ish ID to something around 8mm for your regular axles, whereas Ron's are standard 608's. The Sineramics I have are also Greased bearings, not oiled.

Thanks in advance, Joe

Don, are the ends of your Randal hangers really crooked? Usually, the extended inner races on the Biltins are enough to overcome really poorly cast/finished hanger ends, but it sounds like you may have a really rough set. I have one set of trucks that I took a file to, so I didn't have to use a speedring on the inner side.
Unless you've got a really weird axle nut, the "outer" speedring should be totally unecessary, though.

Spacers with Biltins...

I have Biltin abec 5, and 7's. When I use 2 tiny speed washers, my Flywheels spin alot more freely, than without. I do use 2 spacers per wheel with my Biltins. I have Randal DH trucks. Some poeple say "get rid of those speed washers", but they improve the "wheel spin" test. Dont know why this is. Don J www.geocities.com/djackson9504

Sin Systems also uses silicon nitride balls. Some bearings use the aluminum oxide balls because they are a lot cheaper (0.287 / cubic inch for high aluminum oxide vs. up to $2.50/cubic inch for the silicon nitride).
The difference is that the Sinners are like $40.00 and the Powells are like $1,000,000 or something.
