Hmmmm.....
Really? William, thanks for being the first to post an answer. Is there anyone from Ron's that can villify or mollify this? I am still really curious if I just got a bad set? Ron are you out there?

Marty, After your concern over those bearings i did some digging and from what i found the rockets you have (the same as mine) are an older lot that he assembles himself unlike the NMB's (aka Steel Rockets). I guess you arent the only one with this problem since there is a newer model out that has a "slight change to the raceway Curvature and one other feature to so now Rockets will handle even more axial load" Im guessing this means a deeper race or something and that could possibly take that play out, the new ones have "RocknRons Rockets" on the seals insted of the normal NMB seal. It is also being taken one step more and there is talk of NMB ceramics being made which are the makers of the orginal steel rockets and will have those same tight tolerances. Although for slalom that play may be negative i was running ceramic rockets when i was lighting up hobby hill.

i was looking at getting some rims for my bearings too. There are bearings that have mechanisms to keep crap out of the ball chamber, like the Bones labrynths and ceramic labrynths, but since i use such lightweight lube, i have to open 'em up to replace 'em ever weekend anyway, so i just sift 'em around in some acetone while i re-lube. I'm using black-panther abec 7's and i'm incredibly happy. GOnna get a set of bones STF wheels and then i'll be flying.
P.S. are rockin ron's really that good? i saw them on www.socalskateshop.com but i hadn't heard much about them so i didn't know what to think.

WHat is a bearing that you could ride in the rain, and it wouldn't rust or slow down? I have biltin abec 7's and they seem pretty fast after I've riden them over a mile in a down pour.

Seals?

The parasitic drag from 8, or for that matter 16 bearing seals (and I mean rubber contact seals, not metal shields) is virtually insignificant. If you're actually looking for the last 1/100th of a second or immeasurable bit of speed, then running freshly cleaned and lubed shielded top quality bearings is fine, but for the real world? I love pleasure tools 7s with a nice green rubber seal on both sides of each one. Just use bigger wheels and you'll go faster. Or eat more pie. That helps too.
Really accurately made STEEL spacers have a WAY bigger impact on speed.

Ron's Ceramics

Recently I was given a set of Ron's ceramics to try out. I loaded them into some Zig Zags and when I put them on I found something peculiar. I have a tiny bit of play that I cannot wrench out. When I put them on the first time I kept giving the wheel the wiggle test and kept putting about an 8th of a turn to the nut. Suddenly I realized that the wiggle was not from the nut being loose, but the play was in the bearing itself. I literally tightened them down until they were pinched by the nut, but they still wiggled.
I know they are supposed to have something like an .05 tolerance so I am curious if I got a bad set. Anybody else had this problem? I have to admit I was really bummed with the play. OH and to answer the question before it's asked, I was running a Splitfire front with an old TTC in the back.
Anybody????

Bearings and different abec ratings

I had my shields bend too, I posted this on the other boards....I bought abec 5 and abec 7 Biltins, and 2 of the abec 7's are making grinding noises, and the wheels wont spin as freely as they should, I think the walls are damaged, cause when I bought my new skate tool (cheap one). Anyway my question is: Can I use (2) abec 5, and (2) abec7 bearings? Maybe put the 5's on the front and 7's in the back trucks? I wouldnt think it should make a difference, considering the rating is still high on the 5's. Any thoughts?

Shields

Dont take your shields out unless you have a closet full of bearings. Bent shields are usually the after effect of Lame skate wrenches that are not nurled so they pass the nut and slam into your shields. you also need speed rings on the inside towards your truck so the bearing will not rub on the sometimes bad cast hangers. Elephant wrenches are the answer!!! I have seen the masses street riders with the wheels set up so they slam back in forth. I crank all my bearings down tight and my bearings roll forever! Thanks OUST!

Cage/Shield Rub

If your shields are showing evidence of cage rub, either something *IS* bent or your bearings are showing piss-poor design.

big call man. I've had metal shields rub. I know this cause when I've gone to service em after about 12mnths use, the inside of the shield showed shinier spots where the metal cage had rubbed. they weren't bent or deformed either. Bearings with nylon cages are a good way to get round that prob. my younger bro rides street and swears by runnin without shields to go quicker. I'm more interested in making them go quicker for longer, rather than go the quickest.

sure, bearings are faster with the shields off: until the bearings get all gunked up with the junk the shields were designed to keep out...
