Bearing Maintenance
On 7/14/2000 Pre-School Rider wrote in from (209.198.nnn.nnn)

Vertskater, dig into the archives here, use the Search function, looking under, say,'oil','cleaning','bearing lube'.There's a wealth of info(and Opinion)on this(and other)topics, but no FAQ bin, yet.Oh,and yes, wheels off, bearings out to clean or lube your bearings(Shield removal is required on some bearings as well, but be sure your bearings are designed with this in mind,or you get an exercise in frustration).

lubing bearings
On 7/14/2000 sarah wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

I'm not an expert on this topic, but check out the instructions on cleaning & lubing bearings that come with Powell Speed Cream. They worked well for me and they were easy to understand. I trust George Powell would not steer me wrong...

WD 40
On 7/14/2000 Racer wrote in from (203.134.nnn.nnn)

Nick, Didn't you know that WD 40 dries out your bearings which in end makes them slower and can burst the covers easier.

Wondering what the best methos of cleaning and lubing
bearings? Heard super lube and WD-40 are a good combo.
SHould the wheel be taken off to do this?

envy bearings
On 7/13/2000 sarah wrote in from (207.172.nnn.nnn)

Yeah, these bearings definitely suck, whether new or broken in. My husband had these on his envy, and he had to change them almost right away...he couldn't take their crappiness any longer. he got some China Bones & he liked those a lot better.

Envy speed stars
On 7/13/2000 Herbn wrote in from (207.198.nnn.nnn)

Sluggish slow bearings, this 11 year old girl came into my shop with her large size Envy and said the bearings were awful ,so i swapped them out for Speedemon golds(much faster than the transparent ones)immediate improvement same kind of smooth freespin as China or Swiss bones and even a little cheaper(than the chinas)Hell if an 11 year old says the bearings are slow something is definitely wrong with them.

swiss bearings
On 7/12/2000 rob k wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

i tightened up my wheels so they have no play on the axle. this seems to have helped, but they don't spin as freely. i am using washers and spacers. my bearings do seem to be getting better though.

rob

Biker bearings
On 7/12/2000 Herbn wrote in from (207.198.nnn.nnn)

I believe i've heard Powell Ceramix might be Ninjas though definitely ceramix, which he must buy with the Dregs race board profits, thouroughly explaining the price on a blank, concave ,unkicked, uncambered ,non-fiberglassed,deck with no sanding done to the top, compared to a Libteck, the dregs should cost thirty bucks retail, not that the lib is a better race board, but it is a double kick ,concave, vertically laminated, plastic top and bottom sheet with fiberglass and carbon internal layers, with uhmw skids and chip resistant epoxy top fillers on both the nose and tail, and it has wheel wells and router railgrabs and still it costs less! I think the board covers his entire race budget, for the team.

rob's bearings
On 7/10/2000 Sarah wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

Rob-make sure oyu give your bearings enough time to break in. also, make sure they are truly in the wheel as far as they can go, which I have found to be difficult at times. :)

swiss
On 7/9/2000 jonnieo wrote in from (216.224.nnn.nnn)

With all the suggestions, I also made the jump to swiss. At fist they weren't that great, as rob said, but when they're broken in, damm are they sweet. I've put about 20 miles on mine so far. Today, I was bombing a bike path with a slight incline in a hut tuck... maybe 7 degrees, and a car went by and the guy yelled "Hey, 25 miles an hour!!!". It was definitely faster than I've ever gone on that particular path before. Thanks everyone for pushing me to go swiss.

On 7/9/2000 rob k wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

i just spent $35 on these bearings and am a little disapointed so far. they are not as smooth as i thought they would be. some of them make clicking sounds. it might just be because they aren't broken in yet. anybody know?

rob

black panthers
On 7/9/2000 racer wrote in from (203.12.nnn.nnn)

Well me and my mate went for a long skate today. He is already beating me down hills when I have china bone red which are about two months old and are fully broken in. So the black panthers look as if they are good fast bearings. And I will give a further update went the bearings a fully broken in. cheers

bearing spacers
On 7/7/2000 Bob wrote in from (192.73.nnn.nnn)

I think you need some 10mm wide spacers for the krypto hawaii wheels. The best ones I've run across come with China Bones -- they are very well machined.

I believe the Krpyto "route" wheels take a narrower, roller skate spacer.

China Bones
On 7/1/2000 Sarah wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

I have these and I think they're pretty nice, but there are some minor problems that I bet the Swiss ones don't have. Mainly, a few are a little noisier than I'd like. My next set with probably be Bones Swiss so I can compare the two.

chinas/graphite
On 6/30/2000 jonnieo wrote in from (216.224.nnn.nnn)

Well, another bearing broke today. This time I felt the wheel get really loose, so I picked up the board and walked home. Sure enough the balls had come out and were floating around loose. There was also a ton of graphite in there. Maybe putting the graphite on them did them in. They're only 3 months old, and i haven't left them any longer than two weeks at a time without a through cleaning and lubrication. I guess I'll have to buy another set. Dammit, I'm trying to save up for a car.
