Mukilteo, WA Grand opening

Another Grindline Park is finished! 19,000 square feet with lights at the YMCA. 10 foot deep bowl with pool coping, a clam shell, and more. Fun stuff. Only thing, it reminded me of California. Full pads required, sessions were short. Park was worth it though.
Max frontside out of the deep bowl.
The park is located across the street from where Michael Dong works, he is stoked. Now he's going to be so destracted, that maybe next season I'll be able to beat him (wishful thinking I know.)

Vans Potomac Mill (Woodbridge, VA) Skatepark Closing 12/31/2004

Sad but true, the Vans Skatepark near Washington DC will be closing for good on 12/31/2004. It has been a fun 4 1/2 years of skateboarding there. Many friendships have been made at our Vans park and many bones have been broken there.
Hate to see Vans or any skatepark close, especially an indoor one. But at least it is not like the late 70's-early 80's when all of the skateparks closed except for two in Florida and a few public parks in all of North America. This time we have so many public parks to skate that the future of skatepark riding is secure.
So before the year ends out, lets try to plan a big skate session with the slalom bros at Vans before it shuts down. I'll bring the timer and we can do an impromptu "banked slalom" race and have fun getting some carves in the small bowl and grinds the kidney pool.

PS, today me, Parsons, and Wes E. skated the Arlington Park. Kind of crowded and verged on a being a snake session at times but it was a cool group to skate with.

Great news siXsiX! My skatepark committee was the other $10k award.
The phase approach is a great idea. We still have around $40k to raise to get the full county match of $75k. Our local Rotary donated $25k, but $20k of that will be given over 4 years.
We want to build a 15k sq ft facility, but starting with half of that is what we will probably do.

The Tony Hawk Foundation just awarded the Skate Park of Athens a $10,000 grant! The crew from Grindline is tentatively set to break ground next month and if the weather cooperates we hope to be skating by Valentines Day.
We're spending around $150,000 for 7500 sq ft (Phase I)

Tarped the first time March '03.
Tarped the third time for learn to skate day, May '04.
Minor details. Ballard Bowl is 2000 square feet, my tarp is a 60X60 heavy duty tarp, which weighs about 200 pounds. It takes at least 5 guys to put the thing up, and it takes us about an hour.
I attached eyelets to the building next to the bowl, and ran ropes to the fence. When it rains really hard, we have to stop skating every 30 minutes or so, and empty the puddles. But, that's because the installation is just hap hazzard. When I purchased the tarp, I didn't know if it would even work.
The idea for this came from seeing these huge tents that businesses set up for special events. Seemed to me that one of those (which cost more than 2,000 dollars) would cover a bowl fairly easily. And the fact that the local indoor skatepark wasn't that much fun to skate.

Can u re-post a pix of your tarp-covered Bowl escapades....I was telling the park mgr at Frederick, MD's skate park about what u did and they are interested in doing something similar to cover their bowl so it can be skated when it's wet outside....I want to print it out for them. Halloween sure looked like fun at the Ballard Bowl!

The bowl is slated to be demolished in the winter sometime I believe. It's replacement is on the drawing board. So, in answer to your question, it looks like the bowl will go, but it will be replaced. Hopefully with something better. If that's possible.

i must say one thing about all this ranting.while i agree pegs are pretty bunk and they do hag the coping. there are a few riders in my area that dont do the peg thing and are really respectful of the park and the users, hell they even sweep the park sometimes. i guess my point is that there are decent bmxers out there. its just a shame about those others and what they did to your coping.

Dan, KILLER shot of the Ballard Bowl. Is that poor bowl still destined to be demolished? I hope that it still has a chance to remain.
Your site looks great with the bike/coping pics, but the photo credit for all of the coping only shots goes to MSK, not me.

Ladies and gentlemen, PLEASE feel free to use those shots. The very reason MSK and Team Goon took the shots was to document what bike riders say they don't do, which is damage skateparks. Trust me, those gouges are deep. I went up to do a standard procedure 50-50 grind and literally got thrown off of my board. I climped out of the bowl and was blown away at how huge the chunks were missing from the coping. Made me sick too, Ben.
So, it was natural to get shots of riders slamming their pegs down on the coping when they showed up at the skatepark. Perfect opportunity at very least.
Anyway, everyone do what you can to keep bikes out of SKATEparks. If the sign states NO BIKES, then I'll grab my cell phone and call the cops to rid the skatepark of the bikes and scooters when my boys and I are in danger of colliding with them. It's just not worth it. Plus the damage they create.
Sorry to rant, but that's a touchy subject w/me.
Now... back to our normally scheduled programming.

The little town I own land in is getting ready to get a skatepark built,
this should convince them that bikes do not belong.

Yes I would greatly apprecciate to have some of that evidence of bike damage in my resources to help discourage cities that are considering opening their future skateparks to bikes. Adding to what SumDum wrote...
When we arrived at the park, one of the first things we noticed was that the coping on the kidney bowl was damaged beyond repair, and surrounded by tire tracks. This park isn't even completed yet, and bikes have managed to completely destroy the coping. When more bikers showed up, rather than run them off, we decided to give them a bit more rope to hang themselves with. Since the coping already will have to be replaced before the park can open, it really didn't matter how much more damage was done to it. But it did give us an opportunity to document the damage as it happened.
Now, whenever anyone argues that bikes don't cause damage to skateparks, I have evidence as to just how much they can cause in a matter of weeks. If anyone else wants more photos of the damage, as well as some of the bikes causing it, just email me at the address above...

True, Ben. But before we stopped them and told them what damage they were doing, we took a few pictures to back up our theory that those feckless sissy pegs DO indeed cause much damage to pool coping. When we arrived, there were huge (6" wide x 3" deep) gouges missing from the pool coping. Some bikers showed up and as we were leaving, I mentioned to our cameramen that they should shoot a few pics of the coping before it gets replaced. I'm told that it's since been replaced. Hopefully, bikes and scooters won't be allowed in that skatepark. It's a pretty fun place to skate. My only wish is that the keyhole deserved the tiles/pool coping... not that miniature koi pond. LOL!
Mr. Hughes, I skated with MSK yesterday and he told me your pics should be arriving soon. Please let us know when you get them up on your site, yes? I'd love to see them.
Apryl ROCKS! She's a great girl with a style all of her own. I first met her, a couple of years back, at the Orange and Ontario Mills Vans skateparks. Since then, I often see her all over the So Cal skateparks. Super nice girl and I commend her Mom for taking her everywhere.
