6 foot bowls...

The comment that a 6 foot bowl was challenging enough for 12 year olds came from the city of Millcreek. Who got it directly from Purkiss Rose.
Isn't Encinitas 11 feet deep? And the Combi? And Upland is 11 right? Tell Wormy that he needs to follow those examples.

My post was supposed to say VERT ramp, I can type really, NOT>
Anyway, I sent him another email this morning with comments on some of his other parks I've skated (including Vancouver Washington for you Dan). I included a comment about the strategic location of the Folsom park next to the super mega watt power lines....
He said he was open to suggestions, so I made them. I'll let you know what he says if anything in response. Something gnarly to skate around here would sure make my day!

hey, The twin bowls up here in Folsom arre only 9', and the kids are just ripping them!! Is that "Wormie's" take on the situation, or is that some parent's thinking that a 6' bowl is a challenge to a 12 year old? I'd really like to see some BIG TERRAIN here in NorCal. Don't get me wrong, 9' bowls with a foot of vert are a lot of fun, but why aren't we seeing the truly gnarly/epic stuff that the NW is getting? It's like hoping for the world's raddest roller coaster, and getting a county fair kiddie ride. Chris Olden

Good job on writing to him. It's funny, I've been told to my face that a 6 foot deep bowl is challenging enough for 12 year olds. That's when I started sending photos of 11 year olds riding Hailey (which is 14 feet).
Stay on them like white on rice!

I wrote to "Wormie" as the folks on Sleestak are calling him. (funny) Anyway he actually wrote back a pretty decent letter.
I almost died laughing though when he said that a 9 foot bowl with 1 foot or vert was more than I would find challening. Good thing you don't live down here Dan as you'd have the thing chomped alive in about 3 minutes. I told him to put in a vet ramp or a square rail going down a ten stair and then I would be "challenged".
But anyway, he said he was open to suggestions, so I made some and he said he'll send me the plans. We'll see if that happens, but it's a start... Props to him for at least writing back!

Hey guys - I'm going for a couple of days to Vienna next week, for work. What are the places to skate after work? I saw an indoor wooden thingy - did not look very inspiring..I would go to the The Cradle (Grindline) Park , except they close for the winter in October.

Parks like Arlington are one big bowl. Or flow area if you want to call it that. What will happen, and does happen, in other parks similar to this one, is when it gets busy, the park will get segregated or partitioned off. Such that one guy will be in the 12 vert bowl, and another in the full pipe, and another in the "shallow" end (10 foot deep). With a place like Arlington, it will be busy for the first year or so, especially on the weekends. But it's a good 40 minutes north of Seattle. So that will slow down the traffic that makes it out there. So, when it's not busy, which will most likely be more often than not. It's going to make for one very fast ride. And I expect Chris Raezer's skill to increase as a result!
You are correct however, and probably the most difficult situation is where to put the little kids. It won't be a problem if it's not busy, they can roll around most anywhere. But, when it's busy, they will tend to roll down to the deep end without being aware of what's going on. And because that's a problem, I've always advocated that kids need a mini-ramp/bowl for them to learn in. However, money is always tight, so choices have to be made. And I think in this case it should work out. It will be hectic when it first opens, like any park is. But after that it should be ok.

thats definitely a cool looking park. But on the counterpart,is it just me, or do flow areas annoy anyone else. I hate skating in an invironment, in which its crowded and you constantly have to be looking over your shoulder for loose boards and people dropping in on you. In an tight enclosed area its a little easier to control. but when you are talking about 1/2 acre of skate terrain, its mayhem. then throw in bikes and you have a recipi for wanting to leave and come back at 3:00 in the morning, if its open!
I still say there is no substitute for dedicated bowls and runs, with fenced off areas and boundaries. as opinionated as it is, I feel that flow areas are nothing more that over grown street courses with tranny and roundwall. The method of skating them is very similar. anything and everything goes, just get out of the way.
In late 77, we had a local park that basically had what would be considered today as a flow area. by todays' standards it would have really rivaled a lot of the popular parks (it did not have any coping though, obviously in that time). It got so chaotic at times, that people would only skate it when noone was around. history sort of repeats. shortly after that was when the partions between runs and pool-bowls came into vogue. so those sort of areas were just overlooked or forgotten about. carlsbad and most of the other 1st gen parks were the same way, and were plagued with the same exact problems.

Thanks everyone for the info. I finally got the Sleestak page to work correctly this morning. Unfortunately, I can't read the depth of the bowl on the schematic. I hope it's not going to be another tiny lame bowl like Windsor. As soon as you drop in, you're flying out the other side.... :(

Man, it seems like every week I'm seeing more pictures of concrete skateparks going up. Everywhere but Dallas / Fort Worth, that is. I'm happy for all you people out there who get to ride the round walls, I just wish there was some of that in my part of the world. Does Texas have even ONE concrete skatepark? If so, where is it?
I've got the blues over this situation.

I'm helping Webgurl dig up some old Georgia skate photos for the www.georgiaskater.com webpage. Old skateparks, new skateparks, ramps, ditches, whatever...Georgia Skateboard Photos are needed. So far, I've found 1 photo of Chuck Hults at National Skatepark in theATL. Certainly, there has to be some other photos of old Georgia Skateparks/ramps/whatever out there. If anyone's got some, please email them to me at the above address or send them to the Webgurl at the www.georgiaskater.com page...thanks.
Come visit our new GRINDLINE skatepark in AthensGA this Spring!

Arlington is moving right along. We're planning the grand opening shindig for January 22nd. This park oughta be worth the travel-
16 foot fullpipe with capsule end, the first in Washington State. 12 foot deep bowl, the deepest in Washington State. Black granite ledges on the street course, the first in Washington State.

Sasha how far is this park from you? Have you tried to contact the city directly? If Wormy has already submitted a design, that usually means that the city hired him to do just that. And it also usually means that the "meetings" have already taken place. Hope all is going well for you guys!

Does anyone have the url for a homepage for zach wormhoudt? I have been searching without success. Also, I've been trying forever to find out who is in charge of the Sebastopol skatepark project (no one is willing to provide me with the info) without success only to just read he has already submitted a design to the city.
If anyone has any contact info for him or whoever else might be involved please let me know as if there's anything I can do to influence those involved not to build another piece of you know what baby sized skatepark here in the northbay, I'd really appreciate it. Thanx
Also, read yesterday on concreteddisciples that ground is breaking for Vallejo. Sorry to hear they went ahead with the skatewave garbage anyway. I wrote a letter to the dude in charge explaining why not to. Apparently he didn't care enough to do anything about it. Sorry for ranting, just sick of the bs. Skateparks should be designed by those who skate!

4000 PSI SHOT CRETE IS THE BEST FOR HOME IMPROVEMENTS. USE 7 BAG MIX WITH 3/4 ROCK AND USE A ROCK PUMP (IT HAS A BALL IN THE BOTTOM OF THE BUCKET NOT A BIG FAN BLADE), DON'T USE A GUNITE OR SAND PUMP IT WILL PLUG AND THE SHOT WILL GO OFF IN THE LINE AND U WILL HAVE A NITEMARE ON YOUR HANDS. TRY TO GET FLY ASH AND A 3 SUMP IF YOU ARE ORDERING YOUR CONC.

I only just heard vans m is gone. snif.
That place gets the credit (blame?) for me starting skating again after more than 20 years.
At least I have sunnyvale, but I'll miss that pool. tile. coping. 12ft deep. makes me remember when I was 15 and they closed all the skateparks...
my last session was a lunch session, only me in the pool. one guy walked by outside the fence and hooted on a carve grind.
Well, I'm busy with a new company and the surf is good so I'm only skating maybe once a week if that.
But I haven't seen an old guy in ages. Where are they all? The kids finally got too good/numerous?

AL is a little behind the times. Huntsville/Madison has a couple of parks. both are cement. One is like a big reservoir with street stuff in the center. the other is a ramp style street park, but there is a cement bowl (6'/9' depths) and a nice vert ramp. Bham is supposed to be getting a cement park, a SDG design and build. other than that, its miniramps and street courses in various cities across the state. No more wheel-a-wave, flying wheels, get-a-way, or skate-a-wave. Nashville has a real nice park, with a nice pool bowl, cement coping and pool tile. Hopefully some stuff will start popping up soon.
