Wow, that looks killer! Kinda like the Bear, bowled out, but with smooth transition and bigger walls. Judging from the rider's page at www.viciouslongboards.com, I'd have to guess that the bowl is somewhere near Fallbrook, CA. Anyone care to verify that?

It's tough to tell what the depth of a big ditch is because of the slanted walls. The "Army" banks are the biggest slant wall ditch around here. I believe the Army Corps of Engineers was involved in construction and hence the name. They are around 10 or 15 feet tall.

Sketchmaster - I'm planning on hitting most of the major parks in Phx (Chandler, PV, Gilbert, Glendale etc.) but was wondering if there's a nice long ditch with high banks to get some long runs in on. Thx for the input.

The issue is settled regarding San Juan River access for the Navajo's, contingent on $896,000,000 in funding for Navajo public works being financed by the federal government. Due to the distance that the water will be transported, and the word "piped" in the press release, I anticipate that the delivery system chosen will be underground to alleviate evaporation and algae growth. Arizona consumption is relegated to "secondary" status so the aquaduct should be dry during years of low rainfall on the watershed that feeds the San Juan River, whatever the configuration happens to be.

Just in case yer flyin' by the Rosecrans Ditch, and see construction goin' on - - -
- don't worry - those workers are building a new horse trail/bridge on the "East Side" of this famous Orange County Ditch.
In 1976 my brothers David, Richy, and I met Ed Economy at this ditch.
In the mid 1970'S - you could drive by and see a long line of skateboarders waiting to drop in, just like a Skatepark!
There seems to be a lot of different names for this ditch!

Northrop: What are you looking for? The list is almost endless. Unfortunately some of the best ditches here have been "beautified" with a one or two foot thick layer of gravel but ditches abound here due to the necessity of runoff. A good portion of the inhabited Valley of the Sun area is flood plain and would be flooded every few years if not for the fantastic runoff system we have here. Anyway, give me a specific request regarding size, shape, etc. and I'll get you directions.

Overflow of Opportunity

Overflow is why we have ditches in the first place. Opportunity is the catalyst that drives skaters to drop into whatever presents itself, legal or otherwise. The question could be re-phrased...Are you and opportunist? If so, how far are you willing to take this philosophy? Mike Lowrie, EP, Palmer and GBMII have all taken it to the next logical level...they moved here to ABQ to skate / wade through the oveflow of FREE skate opportunity. New Mexico has been at the edges of enforcement since 1540 when the first Conquistadors arrived from Mexico. Free usually means more to a skater than most adjectives that they can spell.
Riders, Rippers and Racers we'll see you here one way or another.

I don't consider it a privilege, I have charged them since the day i got here. I don't call it a right either, because I have been chased down indian school by the open space ranger's(slow bastard's! lol) I call it FUN, I didn't start sk8in for someone to tell me I can't sk8 there. If that were the case we probably wouldn't have found our house. Sk8ing has always been rebellious, that's why most of us got into it. It's just now, we aren't getting any younger and realize consequences. There are post's at every single ditch here in town that say "no skateboarding" if it's not there, it's because we stole it to cover the drain in that pool we just found over the fence! SK8 ON!

Get onto the "ditches are deadly" website and have a look at two of our local favs. There are more, including that nice new stretch of ditch that runs along the 101 freeway between McDonald and ViaDeVentura (but I've heard of nobody yet riding it). Kaylee's site will tell you about Coyote (longer more traditional) and CMB in N.Scottsdale (short play-type resevoir).
Drop me an email to LMK when you're in town, and we'll go!

definitely a privledge. i believe there is a right to be able to skate, but since skating so much involves skating on other peoples property this tends to often overshadow this fact. as skaters, we have the right to skate our own pool, ramp, driveway, anthing that is either public owned or owned by us. skating in ABQ is definietly a privledge. but then again, since skating ditches is officially forbidden and against the law, i say neither. it's not a privledge because nobody gave us permission to skate there, and it's not a right because its not our property. i do however feel privledged to have skaten the ABQ ditch mecca. its your call...

OK, so I just went over to www.dictionary.com and www.thesaurus.com and did some word research. It seems that I misused the word "privilege" which is okay because I'm tired of trying to spell it correctly every time. I like the word GBMII used, "opportunity". The point I was trying to get at is: Do you feel that skating ditches like these is an undeniable right or something that we are very fortunate to be able to do? I guess the difference really lies in your state of mind. There are people who think to themselves, "This is great, but I want more and better, so give it to me now, or else I'll feel ripped off!", and there are those that think "This is great, I'm very thankful to get the chance to experience it. I'm so lucky!" Which side of the fence are you on?

Personally, I think it's Social Disobedience. We are choosing to break a law that (however well-intentioned) we find unjust. The sign says "No Skateboarding", but we do it. Again and again.

I think its........... well.... a way of life. Because its illegal as all hell, but its fun as shyte, and very few people here in town give a crap.
so all in all its more of a privilege. because we as locals have these "world famous ditches" to skate in and the poor saps around the rest of the country have nothing that even comes close.
ABQ=MECCA
before any of you skaters die, you have to come to Burque at least once in your lifetime to skate here. then you get the 100 virgins and everlasting peace etc etc.

That's one of my favorite Clash songs.
I have the good fortune of skating some awesome ditches whenever I care. But the open space rangers can take all of that away.
So it seems to be a priveledge. And the ones that control it don't care how much fun we are having.
I don't think skateboarders are used to having any "rights". Just opportunities......

It is neither. A privilege is something that is given to a person, either through personal allowance or by earning the privilege. An example of the the lattre is a drivers lic. You take a test to get the privilege to drive. Or, aother example would be a permission pool. "Joe Bob gave me permission to skate his 9' kidney." A right is something that is given to a group via government, law or providence. We have the right to freedom of speech in the USA as given in the constitution. I also have the right to freedom FROM religion.
Last time I skated in Alb. I didn't see any signs saying that I had permission or the right to skate the Bear. So, I would say it is neither a right or a privilege.

OK, in response to a recent thread on the new Skateboarding Law forum, I would like to run an unofficial poll:
Out of everyone who has ever been to or skated in the ditches of Albuquerque (not just locals), who thinks that being able to skate these mighty ditches is an inherent right and who thinks that it is more of a privilege?
