Yesterday was sick, plain and simple. After two months of nearly constant rain on the weekends, last week the weather finally broke - 60's and ramping up to the 70's by the weekend. You all know what happens when it's 74 degrees in mid March, right? The sh%t is about to hit the fan. A cold front sliding down the Rockies made sure of that. Rio Bravo Ditch, yesterday noon the temp was around 70 and the winds were blowing around 15 mph out of the west, which was about a perfect tailwind for this pitch. K-Lee and I set the cones, duct taped the cones, and kicked the more ominious rocks out of the way on his new and much sicker course. By the time we'd hiked the half mile back to the top the winds had to have picked up to around 25 mph, and about then CM showed up on the scene and we all started making our practice runs. The runs were freaking hairy, besides the cones you had to manuveur around the tumble weeds which were moving just slower than us, so by the final cones we had to hitting 35 or more and there's no run out, only an underpass where the ditch goes under a sideroad and this damn thing was packed full of nasty ass tumble weeds and no telling how many rotting stinking dog or human carcasses might have been in there. The only option was to bail at full speed out of the side of ditch and pull the old jump, run and tumble gig. By race time only 2 other racers, GBMII and Palmer, showed and the gusts, I'd guess 40-50mph, were coming more frequently totally browning out the scene as tumble weeds took bowling practice on the course.
One kodak moment had George a third of the way down the course as Palmer and I looked on with wall of airborne sand and tumble weeds between us and him. All you could see was GBM's upper body going from side to side in the ditch as he was obscured in the haze - pretty cool.
We finally got around to timed runs which were more of survival runs. Palmer and K-Lee made three clean, CM made two, and I one. GBMII biffed on his first and crunched his tailbone and cracked his helmet, it didn't look good. He came back on his second run for a second place time. In the end it was Palmer, GBMII, CM, K-Lee and me. It was a day to remember and maybe not repeat.

I'm thinking about starting the race at 2:00pm sharp. Anyone object to that?
The course has changed, but we will be running the old AND new courses, and possibly a third...
Is everything a go? Will the George-O-Meter be present? What else do we need? Lawn chairs and a hibachi?

Hi all, first time poster here, just getting back into skating after an embarrassingly long time. Looking for good banks and ditches anywhere in Central/Eastern NC or VA. Also interested in getting in touch with any oldschool skaters in the same areas. Feel free to mail me...thanks! Beth Rocky Mount NC

Yeah, I'm going to have to keep an eye on that ditch, for another dry day. And yes I did see the new slalom parking lot they put up. I caught a sweet view of the sunset from there over the volcanoes. Very nice. I heard on the radio that it was supposed to rain this weekend. Let's lynch the meteorologist!

the 13th sound great. The sooner the better. A wiggler on the sidewalk sounds cool. We had some cones set up there a few weeks ago. very fun. Hey K-Lee, try to arrange a good stiff tailwind for that day too. There was one last time I was up there and it was awesome.
Anyone feel like going out this weekend? This weather has just been killing me. I gotta get out and skate.
Peace

The 13th is good for me. The 20th is bad for me, I will be fasting to commemerate the onset of Spring and the day that is as long as it's night. Let's shoot for the 13th. Anyone else have any input? I was also thinking that we could run 3 courses, the dot-course, the x-course, and a tight wiggler on the bike path next to the ditch! I have to set that one first though.....
Last night my buddy Jayson and I scouted the UNM ditch. It was indeed under construction, but was not dry as far as we could see. Thanks for the wild goose chase Tony! I'll have to keep my eye on that one over the next few weeks, to see if it becomes dry again.
