Bear weather update 3/26/03
On 3/26/2003 K-LEE wrote in from (64.106.nnn.nnn)

Things have been looking dry lately, that last wet period only lasted a few days, things are back to being 100% skateable here in the Duke City. I'll update again if/when things get wet, otherwise expect dry conditions.

Ditch key word

I've found the best technical term is "flood control", that applies to a wide range of ditches and reservoirs.

Little Help Please
On 3/25/2003 Lenny wrote in from (156.63.nnn.nnn)

OK, I'll admit I'm just bored at work, BUT I was just doing random searched on the net trying to find some "natural" ditches in my area (maybe through some state highway website, hey! I'm bored and you never know, right?). I did "drainage ditches" and "overflow" ditches. Anyone have any terms I can use?

weekly Bear update
On 3/21/2003 K-LEE wrote in from (172.172.nnn.nnn)

It's raining, it's pouring......

For about the last solid week it's been raining every day, and every ditch I've driven past has been put to it's intended use this week. I'm sure the Bear is no exception, Indian School is surely full of agua. I'll report back again next week. Later for now.

If you did it this sunday I could play too..

I'm moving next friday the 21st, so I'll miss your sunday mass, but try to let me know about this sunday....would love to get some trains through the park before I head south....

bummed I missed you last sunday, I was at the Lansdowne Inn watching nascar with my dad and throw'n back bud's........ya plan'n on going to Lansdowne, need to stop by there and get a crab cake.....good ones, tell 'em cabbage sent ya, you might get a free Budweiser,or a free meal if my old man is there...you know proud parent style....good people.

so anyway you said your going to have a jam at Lansdowne this sunday....cool......and next time them kids throw stuff, make sure you tell 'em cabbage said chill...my name goes far with the local's....you'll be surprised...

maybe we can all tear down the fence together. I mean it took 'em over 20 years to put it there, after the locals burn't down the pro shop.....see the kids were the same 20 years ago.....tells you something right there. A lot of good rippers came out of there, Jason Elliott, Bobby Bassett, Chris Bush,no not Bucky, even though he is the only one you will here of. Some of the kids find the light in skateboarding, and get out to see the rest of the world..thank God for sk8ing

I've been to Landsdowne before and the indignant doomed sperm who walk through that area have become more and more beiligerent in recent times. They belong in a correctional facility. Next time I go I'm gonna spray paint my old .45 squirtgun black, piss in it and yell, "I'm gonna spray you f#@!ing little batards"!, run up on them and squirt them in the face if they're not running back home to Mommy already. It would be too nice.Heh-heh.

I skated landsdown on sunday afternoon...it was dry, little snow in the bottom of the bigger bowl. but other than that it was good to go. the only problem was the two 13 year old boys heckling me from outside the fence. i didnt care about the insults but when they started tossing empty bottles and rocks at me i got a little pissed.

indian school ditch
On 3/10/2003 b wrote in from (129.24.nnn.nnn)

hey. i live in abq, i grew up with the indian school ditch pretty much in my backyard. for the longest time, i never skated it, never thought to try. i just went to the ditch to smoke cigarettes stolen from my step-dad. then i saw some guy bombing the ditches at mach speeds, and then i wanted to try.
there are good, as well as bad, sections of indian school ditch, the best being between tramway blvd and juan tabo blvd.....smooth transitions and nice concrete. there is a no skateboarding sign posted halfway down the run, but the cops dont really care that much.
if ever you are in burque, and want to hit the ditches, give me a holler. i'm always down to go. even at night.

ABQ Ditches
On 3/10/2003 WAHL wrote in from (192.45.nnn.nnn)

Dan, You can't go wrong making a trip to ABQ. The Indian School Ditch is incredible. So smooth and fast. There are other ditches to skate besides that such as the Bear etc. Also the occasional backyard pool and lumpy skateparks. I had a killer time last year and look forward to going back for this years FCR event.

Yes Hugh, Jeremy does know me!
We just skated the "Dragdad" ditch today. It was really fun. Just like Jeremy said, way more fun than I thought it would be. It would be sick if we could get more guys out there all taking runs and helping out with cleaning up or something. It used to be a pool so it's a square shape, rally big but instead of trasition and vert, it's just perfect tall banks. E-mail me if you are interested. A long drive but i think well worth it. DC

Buena Vista, VA
On 3/9/2003 Gary in VA wrote in from (63.188.nnn.nnn)

I'm an old ditch rider from the past (late 70's, El Paso). I'm in VA now and found out about a ditch in Buena Vista. I went and looked at it last weekend. Nice little ditch, 5 feet deep with anywhere between 3-6 feet of flatbottom. It has water in it right now from all the rail. Anyone here know if this ditch is a bust?

John,

Thanks for letting me know. How is the snow situation down that way? The apartment swimming pool is still caked with snow and ice but yesterday we had a heat wave. However, they say it wants to snow on Tuesday again.

Shorts in the Ditch!
On 3/8/2003 Dan Hughes wrote in from (209.191.nnn.nnn)

Yeah, I've been hear'n good things about this Indian Ditch, from John (now got himself a job) Carr. Something like 3 miles long, and as fun as can be.
I'll email or post a message if my trip comes about. It's something I'd love to do.
What started my thinking is that Grindline (www.grindline.com) is constructing a park in Trinidad, CO. And looking on a map, it's not too far from there down to NM ditches. And I really like Grindline's parks, they are so fun. So, I was thinking, hmm...hit the park, then the ditches, and maybe a pool or two, who knows.
Well, it's just a dream right now. Like I said, I'll let you know if I ever wake up and smell the coffee, and get my self down that way!

Ideal time to visit NM
On 3/8/2003 K-LEE wrote in from (172.194.nnn.nnn)

Hey Hughes, what's happening?
Yeah, summer time is a scorcher here. I try to be nocturnal in the summer time, and do most of my skating at night time to avoid heat stroke. Springtime tends to be wet and windy, with an eastward wind 99% of the time, which means UP the ditch, slowing you down bigtime. The other issue is, that if the wind is ever blowing DOWN the ditch, you can bet your balls that a rain cloud is coming, and thats when you better beware of La Llorona, the Ditch Witch herself. The bestest bestest time to come to NM is in the early Fall, around September or October. The weather is usually ideal then. Not too hot, calm air, dry as a bone.
HOWEVER, the weather has NOT been obeying any kind of pattern lately. This has been one of the dryest hottest winters on record, and I've been hitting the ditches with much success lately. So, as we go into the 8th consecutive El Nino year (global warming, anyone?), all bets are off, and your guess is as good as mine. The best idea I can give you is what I've already outlined, Fall is best, but this Spring might be surprisingly skate-friendly. It seems to be so far. I'll keep you all updated on this forum as to the skateability of the ditches. Today was a great day tepmerature wise, but there was a steady eastward wind, so we stuck to the hills and the park. If the wind dies down at all, it's perfect Indian School weather right now. I skated in shorts today, go figure.

I do make it down to B'more/DC every now and again and will let ya know when I do. Just asking about Arbutus because it's supposedly so close to Landsdowne and intend to try and find it whenever they reopen Landsdowne. Can't wait for God to turn up the heat so the snow can melt. You don't happen to know the phone number to the Landsdowne Recreation Department do ya?
