OK, my bro. just sent me this advice. it's not related to skating, but I felt it worthy to pass along.

The Bear is rideable 360 days of the year. It's the other 5 that are a concern. If you can't see that big, black thundering monster cloud dumping rain on the mtn, then you deserve to get washed to Texas. La Orona is her name and Fear is her game.

it's next to bakersfeild. "gateway to death valley" is what it says on the big sign coming into town. the skate community is small here, a real brotherhood, it's cool. accually, i think ridgecrest is closer to lancaster then bakersfeild; i was just trying to give you a good idea of where i am.

ok, i live in ridgecrest, ca and i wanted to tell you guys about this crazy ditch thing that we found last week. it's about the size of half a football feild and all the walls are covered with huge, long, steep banks; wall to wall, no joke. all the way back in the left corner is this huge platform stepdown thing and even the sides of those have banks on the walls. above all of the banks are these foot and 1/2 high ledges. then on top of three of the four walls are these pipes running along the top of the ledges; two of them are metal and one is rubber. it always dry as a bone (except when it rains) and it's so clean for a ditch, all there is are some pine needles in some of the places. if your even in the ridgecrest area come by and me and the bro's will take you out there and buy you lunch!

Has ANYONE ever sessioned what looks like breath-takingly HUGE banks, etc. that run by I-71 in Cincinnati? I got a gander of them this summer when I was going by bus to Nawlins (all work, no skate) and have been fanticizing of them ever since. If so, email me about the best way to access them (besides stopping and parking on the side on the interstate, but if that's the only way...)?

Albuquerque's Flood Control Safety Program

Yeah, it's enough of a problem here that the city has a safety program aimed at keeping kids from playing in the ditches. Their mascot is the "Ditch Witch", derived from local hispanic legend about la bruja del rio, or the river witch. The goal is to depict the ditches as a deadly place not suitable for play time. The Ditch Witch is a mean old hag who will take you down the river and drown you if you don't behave. My sister recently went to a health and safety fair, and the Ditch Witch had her own booth there. They had coloring books, fridge magnets, and all kinds of stickers. My sister hooked me up! Check it out:

Albuquerque NM Bear Ditch

The Weather Channel just did a story on what I think is the Albuquerque NM Bear Ditch. My wife said it had an old shot of somebody skating the ditch wearing short shorts and checkered Vans. Sad to say the scope of the story was about times when the ditch is raging with storm water and how deadly it can become. They showed footage of an attempt to save a cop and a teenager. The cop put his life at risk trying to save the teenager but the teenager did not survive.
Rule to live by out West: Floodwaters Kill!
We skate ditches when it is dry but beware of possible flashfloods in the area. If you are caught in a flashflood, seek out and climb to high ground. If you drive into a flashflood, abandon your car because flashfloods are strong enough to sweep cars away.

Check out the parking garage at George Washington University in DC. It has an outer ring that's nice and wide and fun to longboard down. The inner ring however, is a tight steep funnel that twists to the left. Most people pull out after 2 rotations and a few have hit 3. No one has ever made it all the way down except a street skater who pretty much slid sideways the whole way. I believe it's 5 or 6 floors. There are a bunch of wicked structures downtown. Due to limited space and restrictions on the height of buildings most parking lots are underground making the drops and turns fast and radical though short lived. 75% are busts. Just find the escape routes.

Jeremy, you're right on!! Growing up too poor to build a ramp and no park anywhere within a hundred miles gave me a great appreciation for the hours and hours of great skating you can have in an empty parking lot with good parking blocks!
A couple years ago, I found a used copy of the old "Streetstyle in Tempe" contest. Ooooooh, great stuff!!!

recently there has been somewhat of a comeback of sorts of certain forgotten disciplines. as a matter of fact, i just saw slalom racing on t.v., i was pretty jazzed. then deathbox starts and jay adams and T.A. get pro model shoes, how cool is that? what i was wondering was what ever happened to all the old streetstylers? besides john lucero, (i just got his new red cross board, it's nice) i don't see any of the true old school curb hoppers. don't get me wrong, i like to skate pools, fullpipes, skateparks, but i still have the best time cruising the streets. i never see people do all the tricks that i love like slappies, rock 'n' roll curb slides, push-carts, grassrides, POWERSLIDES, so on a so forth. i still think lance mountain's street skating in the bones brigade video show is one of the best skating ever; and has anyone else see lucero's part in label kills? it's so aggro, i love it. people are building new skateparks all over the place, what i would like to see is a setup like in the old days. a couple of parking stubs, a funky quarter pipe thing, a bank/quarter pipe spine combo, and to finish it all off, a old beat-up car in the middle to hit gnarly acid drops off of. i know i'm living in the past and letting my mind wander alittle bit but i would like to think that some people would still like to see a good ol' bomb drop and i'm keeping faith...

Balston Parking Garage

Jason,
Did you drop in on the "funnel" at the Baltson Garage? I've driven it many times and have yet to find the guts or a clear time to hit it. I think it is makeable but needs to be void of any entry of vehicles top to bottom.
I've skated the regular slope part of Balston Garage late at night. We started just below the top level in order to stay out of the view of the guards. We would then stop just before the bottom level so the parking toll attendants would not see us. I did the garage this way twice. The first time with no problems at all. The second time, we sessioned it for about 30 minutes when came up on some guards taking a break on the second level. They freaked as we flew by and then shot out the bottom exit. It's a fun place no matter the bust factor.

I did a parking garage tour of Northern VA and found the tube at 6am this morning. It is a spiral all the way down 6 levels with a slight bank in the ballston area of Arlington VA. Anyone know of a good garage that has a nice bank all the way down. They make for good winter riding spots.
